A triple bogey 7 at the 11th torpedoed Scott Henderson's hopes of taking up a challenging position going into Sunday's final round of the Tessali-Metaponto Open - the latest European Challenge Tour fixture - at Riva dei Tessali and Metaponto golf clubs in south-east Italy.
Scott had jumped into the top 20 at halfway with a second-round 65 (six under par) for a halfway tally of 138 but he let the opportunity slip through his fingers with a third-round 74 for a two-undere-par tally of 212.
That puts the Aberdonian in joint 45th place - 11 shots behind the leader, Ulsterman Michael Hoey (pictured right) who has put together three tasty rounds of 66, 67 and 68 for 13-under-par 201 to lead by two shots from Joost Luiten (Netherlands).
Henderson was out in level par 35 with birdies at the second and ninth cancelling out bogeys at the first and eight. Then came that triple bogey 7 at the 11th. Scott did birdie the 12th and 17th after that but he also bogeyed the 14th and 18th in an erratic inward half of 39.
Rookie pro George Murray, the former Scottish amateur champion from Earlsferry, has scored 69, 72 and 74 for 215. He had birdies at the 12gth and 14th but five bogeys in hlaves of 38 and 36.
MICHAEL HOEY IN THE LEAD
Michael Hoey continued his return to top form by moving into a one shot lead after a third round of three under par 68 took him to 13 under 201.
Hoey has rediscovered the swing, touch and confidence that helped him finish eighth on the 2005 Challenge Tour Rankings.
The Belfast man is the first to admit that his rookie season on the European Tour last year was one drenched in confusion and over-technicality, and resulted in him losing his place at European golf’s top table.
Unbowed, Hoey has retuned to the Challenge Tour, refocused and burning with determination to climb his way back to one of golf’s highest plateaus on The European Tour.
“I have been doing a lot of good work with my coach, Andrew Nicholson, and I have been improving all aspects of my game over the winter.
“I am feeling the benefit of it, without a doubt, and I am certainly a better player than when I won the Austrian Open on the Challenge Tour in 2005, but I have to prove that with results.”
Hoey’s victory at the 2005 BA CA Golf Open, presented by Telekom Austria was a significant landmark in the 28 year old’s career.
TOP AMATEUR CAREER
It gave him the belief that he could win in the professional arena after a glittering amateur career that saw him win the 2001 British amateur championship as well as helping Great Britain and Ireland win the Walker Cup that same season.
Hoey will have to draw on every bit of that experience as he goes into Sunday’s final round at Riva dei Tessali, with a quality field looking to overcome him.
Frenchman Raphael Eyraud, Dutchman Joost Luiten and Sweden’s Fredrik Widmark trail the leader by just a single stroke, while Welshman Liam Bond is just two off the pace on ten under.
Among the four players on eight under, five behind Hoey, is Challenge Tour No 1, Italy's Edoardo Molinari, who, having already won twice on the 2007 schedule, can win atoumatic promotion to the European Tour if he can win one more event this season.
will be on Hoey, who is fully aware of the pressure of leading going onto the final round.
“I know all about it,” said Hoey. “I led three times going into the last round on the Challenge Tour in 2005. The first two times I didn’t do to well and kind of got caught out thinking about results, but the third time I won in Austria.
“There is pressure there, but you have to try and go back to one shot at a time, but enjoy it as well. It’s why we are all out here. If someone had said to me at the start of the week that I would be leading by one going into the final round I would have thought that’s amazing, so you try and realise that as well.”
