SCOTTISH AREA CHAMPIONSHIP

NORTH-EAST AREA HOPES NOSEDIVE

North-east’s hopes of making it through to the finals of the Scottish men’s area team golf championship nosedived over Alloa Golf Club’s Schawpark course yesterday (Sunday).
They were well beaten 7-2 by Clackmannanshire while Angus beat Dumbartonshire 5-4 at Windyhill.
The two results combine to make Angus favourites to qualify for the semi-finals at Glasgow Gailes Golf Club on Saturday, October 7. Angus top Section B with two wins out of two and complete their programme with a home game against North-east at Letham Grange in September.
North-east trailed 2-1 after the foursomes at Alloa and then lost the singles heavily, 5-1. Mark Halliday (Royal Aberdeen), who had partnered Laurie Phillips (Cruden Bay) to North-east’s only foursomes success, was the only visiting winner in the singles.
Terry Mathieson (Murcar Links), who has a splendid match-play record for North-east District over the years, was obviously feeling the effects of his great run in the Allied Surveyors Scottish match-play championship at Nairn last week.
Terry lost both his foursomes and singles ties.
North went down 6 ½-2 ½ to Perth & Kinross at Crieff in a tie between two winning teams from the opening sectional ties. That means P&K, with two wins out of two, are in the driving seat to qualify from Section D.
North lost the foursomes 2-1.
Wallace Booth (Comrie) was seven under par for the first 11 holes in beating Bryan Fotheringham (Forres) 2 and 1 in a top singles tie of rare quality.
