Debut delight for Yorkshire golf pro Holly | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Hallamshire Golf Club professional Holly Morgan put an Open
Championship regional qualifying venue to the sword when she
made her first appearance in the Women’s PGA One-Day Series.
Morgan, who is in her first year of training to become a PGA
Professional, posted a six-under-par score of 68 at Kedleston Park, Derbyshire, to secure victory with five shots to spare.
In doing so, she left two of the WPGA’s most accomplished players
in her wake.
Suzanne Dickens and Ali Gray, who will represent Great Britain and
Ireland in the inaugural Women’s PGA Cup in Austin, Texas, later
this year, finished six and nine shots respectively behind the
22-year-old.
Playing alongside Dickens, Morgan showed it was possible to score
well without dawdling or going through tortuous pre-shot routines.
As a result the pair completed their rounds in a brisk three hours
25min and, traffic permitting, were in time to return to their home
clubs for a late lunch.
For Morgan, that means Hallamshire, the club where the late John Jacobs and Pete Cowen, embarked on PGA careers that saw them become Master Professionals and world-renowned coaches.
And both would surely have been impressed by Morgan’s
negotiation of a course where a month ago the road to next
week’s Open Championship at Royal Portrush ended for more than 100 hopefuls.
It culminated with an eagle at the par-five 18th and had begun with four birdies and no dropped shots on the front nine.
Saunton Golf Club’s Jessica Bradley was also four-under at the turn
but lost momentum on the back nine and posted a one-under-par
round of 73 to finish level with Jess Smith of Oberhessischer Golf
Club in Germany and Ella Mason, an amateur.
Meanwhile, Gray, the Order of Merit leader who carded a three-over-par round of 77, remains on 20 points, nine clear of Marie Martindale. Dickens, who finished
on level-par, has 9.75 while Morgan and Sarah Smith are both on 10. Cathy Panton-Lewis was the leading Scot in T9 position with a 75.
