Barrie Douglas Foundation dinner will give youth sport a five-figure boost

By Gordon Bannerman
YOUTH sport will enjoy a five-figure boost from the inaugural Barrie Douglas Foundation annual dinner.
The fundraiser was held in memory of the captain of the Scottish national boys’ team who took ill during last year’s European Team Championship and died in a hospital in Spain. He was 69.
One-time Amateur champion Gordon Sherry regaled the audience at Perth’s Salutation Hotel with tales of his experiences at The Open and The Masters, with top after-dinner speaker Willie Allan MBE turning in a star performance.
The dinner was sponsored by Dental Technique and McLeod Glaziers.
Lifelong friend Alec Stobie paid a poignant tribute to his fellow former Perth Academy pupil and local businessman.
Among the many golfers of various vintages in attendance were European Tour professional Bradley Neil along with fellow tour pros Danny Young and Wallace Booth.
The Foundation was established by close friends, with support from Barrie's widow Tish and the family, to preserve his legacy and reflect his passion for encouraging young sporting talent.
The one-time GB and I selector for the R and A was hugely influential in Perth and Kinross County golf for more than 50 years, serving as boys’ and mens’ team captain, manager and president.
Foundation committee member Charlie Gallagher said: “The dinner was hugely successful with fantastic support from the business community reflecting the esteem in which Barrie was held.
“The Foundation has already backed a Scottish Junior Masters tournament held at Blairgowrie, along with other events.
“In addition to golf, we also plan to support youth development projects at Perthshire Rugby Football Club and St Johnstone, which were also close to Barrie’s heart.”

Wallace and Fraser share lead at Alfred Dunhill Links Championship

NEWS RELEASE
Matt Wallace birdied the last hole at The Home of Golf to share the first-round lead at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship with Marcus Fraser.
Wallace, playing his first round of the unique pro-am tournament on the Old Course at St Andrews, birdied four of his last five holes on the front nine, and then made two further gains on the back nine, including a birdie on the 18th to join Fraser on four under par. Already a three-time winner this season, Wallace is bidding for his fourth title in the space of just seventh months.
Just two golfers broke par at Carnoustie, with Fraser birdieing two of his final three holes to sign for a score of 68. Austria's Matthis Schwab signed for a three under par round of 69 to share third place.
At Kingsbarns, Irishmen Padraig Harrington and Paul McGinley rolled back the years as they joined Schwab on three under par. Jinho Choi, also at Kingsbarns, and Phachara Kongwatmai, playing at St Andrews, make up the top three.
Twice-defending champion Tyrrell Hatton and his Ryder Cup opponent Brooks Koepka share eighth place with five other golfers on two under par. Hatton hopes to become the first person to win an event three times in a row since Tiger Woods defended the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational for a second time in 2007.
Player Quotes
Marcus Fraser: "I'm over the moon. I just sort of stuck it out most of the day and waited for the putts to drop and at the end I made a couple of good par saves. A nice long one at the end from about 30 feet. It's brutal out there. Doesn't really matter if it's into the wind or downwind, and then you get the cross-breeze off 8 and 9. That's as strong as I've played the golf course I think."
Padraig Harrington: "A couple of missed opportunities, so it was awkward like that. I certainly prefer to play this golf course in a crosswind. I find this is very playable in a cross-wind and I was definitely, with the forecast, we knew Thursday was going to be a bad day, so when it came out that I was on Kingsbarns, I was very happy about that. It is a very playable course in bad conditions."
Tyrrell Hatton: "It was a tough day, tough conditions out here. So it was always going to be tough for scoring. Feel like I actually played okay. Hit a few poor shots, which is easy to do today, but happy with how I played my last nine holes. Gave myself plenty of opportunities, and it was nice to hole a couple and yeah, just happy to get under par, really, after the front nine."
Brooks Koepka: "The wind is blowing. I'm pleased with my round. Hung in there. Felt like I made a few mistakes but that happens, and just got to move on from it. This wind, you hit one bad shot it's exaggerated and you wind up with double really quick. Keep the ball on the ground and control your misses, I did a good job of that today"

Senior Tour rookie Levet looking for win in European Senior Masters

NEWS RELEASE
Thomas Levet will make his maiden Staysure Tour appearance when he tees it up tomorrow on Day One of the Farmfoods European Senior Masters.

The Frenchman comes into the week on a high after being heavily involved in his hometown’s successful first-staging of the Ryder Cup, where Team Europe dominated Team USA in front of record crowds that were nearly 40 per cent Francophone.
“It was unbelievable,” he said. “The crowds, the response we had. I warned the people that The Ryder Cup is unbelievable and said that it would be a great gift. I could tell they thought I was exaggerating, but last week was even greater than what I told them, so that was great to see the smiles on all the people, hear the singing, and be a part of the atmosphere.”
The Paris native has enjoyed a successful career competing against the game’s best players, notching six wins on the European Tour, and is now excited to be back competing against his old rivals.
I’m feeling young — I’m back to being a rookie again,” he said. “It’s quite funny to see my friends again. You know I haven’t seen most of them for a good six or seven years and it’s good to see the names on the Staysure Tour. I’m going to enjoy being back out there.
“We’re going to be playing a course where I played my first British Masters and it’s never been an easy test this golf course.”
Levet’s professional trophy haul stands fittingly bookended by two wins on home soil — his first-ever European Tour triumph at the 1998 Cannes Open, and his most recent win, a one stroke victory over Thorbjørn Olesen and Mark Foster at the 2011 Open de France on the now infamous Le Golf National, host venue of The 2018 Ryder Cup.
A nagging injury had prevented the golfing star from being able to compete in recent years, which he admits caused him to wonder about his future in the game.
“I had a knee injury, and when you have an injury like that you cannot walk that much,” he said. “The problem I had was that in the swing, you push on your left knee, and the left knee was the one that bothered me, so it was not fun.
“It was three years of not any fun. I couldn’t exercise, I couldn’t practise, but I still played when I could, and I kept in touch with the game. I didn’t know if I would make the Staysure Tour or not, but now I’m here and I’m thrilled about it.”
The man who celebrated his 50th birthday on September 5 has long been a big-time player. At The 2002 Open Championship, he battled extremely difficult conditions over 72 holes at Muirfield Golf Links to finish in a four-way tie for the lead alongside Ernie Els, Stuart Appleby and Steve Elkington.
Appleby and Elkington could not keep pace in the prescribed four-hole play-off, which saw Levet and Els continue on to a next-hole-wins battle.
While Els would ultimately triumph at Muirfield, Levet cemented his place in history as a superior links player with yet another top five finish two years later at The 2004 Open Championship, which was played at the famed Royal Troon Golf Club.
A member of Team Europe at The 2004 Ryder Cup, Levet would go on to hoist the biennial trophy in record-setting fashion — an 18 ½ - 9 ½ drumming of the Americans, including a Sunday Singles win over Fred Funk, in what still stands as the largest margin of victory ever recorded by a European team.
For now though, the new ‘youngest man on Tour’ is just excited to be back competing.
“I haven’t scored for a long time,” he said.  “I can’t wait to have that scorecard in my pocket once again.”
The Farmfoods European Senior Masters runs from October 5-7 at Forest of Arden Hotel and Country Club and will feature an elite field complete with 14 different players who have  represented Team Europe at the Ryder Cup through the years.

Yorkshire pair win Brenda King Foursomes
Brenda-King-new-web

Yorkshire’s Betty Sworowski and Julie Wheeldon scored a two-shot win when they teamed up for the first time in the Brenda King Foursomes at Brough Golf Club.
The pair, from Wakefield Golf Club, led from start to finish in England Golf’s season-ending tournament for senior women. They opened with three-over par 74 before adding 82 in the second round.
They held off the fast finishing combination of Jo Shorrocks (High Post, Wiltshire) and Penny Grice-Whittaker (Tankersley Park, Yorkshire), who shot 76 in the final round. Shorrocks has won this competition for the past three years with a different partner, while Grice-Whittaker is a past winner of the Women’s British Open.
“We were both a bit tense in the second round. We knew we had some really good players chasing us,” said Sworowski. “But we held on and won by two shots, so we were pleased by that.”
Sworowski and Wheeldon met when Betty became a senior two years ago and joined the Yorkshire Vets. They play off three and two respectively, are regulars at English championships and also both play for the Yorkshire senior team.
