Impromptu speech by Gary Player made it a Carnoustie day to remember for juniors
FROM KEIR McNICOLL
We held an event yesterday on the Championship Course, Carnoustie to give Juniors at each club in Angus, with a PGA Professional, a chance to play prior to the Open.
The course is in magnificent condition and with grandstands and leaderboards surrounding every tee, fairway and green, it was hopefully an experience every junior will never forget.
Three Juniors and PGA Professional were invited to play in a handicap team Stableford competition. Ballumbie Castle, led by Stuart Milne, were the winners of the event with 48pts. In second place were the Carnoustie Links team with 47pts. In total, 10 teams competed, in what was a fantastic night and celebration of golf.

The evening was capped off with dinner in the amazing new Rookery restaurant and also an impromptu speech from former Open champion Gary Player, pictured left, who was in the restaurant for a corporate commitment with Rolex!

Sean Lawrie in four-way tie for EuroPro Tour lead with a 65

Aberdeen's Sean Lawrie, pictured, is in a four-way tie for the lead on six-under-par 65 after the first round of the EuroPro Tour's Cumberwell Park Championship, Bradford upon Avon.

James Frazer (Pennard Golf Club) was the first in the clubhouse with an opening round of six-under par, one which included seven birdies and just one bogey, comfortably the Welshman’s strongest opening round of the season.
Local amateur James Cooper (Cumberwell Park), 18, made a birdie-eagle-birdie start on his way to a 65.
Mark Young is looking to double his £10,000 win tally this season, and had the perfect start, carding the third 65 round of the day.
Sean Lawrie (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) built on some solid performances in recent weeks to be the final of the four to card a 65-opening round, bogey-free no less. He said: “It feels like my game has been building to this sort of performance for the last few events. To go bogey-free was a great bonus and something I can build on heading into tomorrow.”

He added: “After carding a great opening round at the PDC Golf Championship at Studley Wood but then dropping off in the second; I feel I’ve learnt from that now I know what it is like to be in that position and hopefully I can build on that tomorrow.”

The second round of the Cumberwell Park Championship continues on Thursday (28th June) after which a cut to the leading 50 players and ties will be made before a final round is played on Friday (29th June).

Jonathon Keith and June Nicol are Inverness club champions
Jonathon Keith and June Nicol with their Inverness Golf Club championship trophies. Picture by Robin Wilson

By ROBIN WILSON
Jonathon Keith and June Nicol are Inverness Golf Club's respective men's and women's champions for this season after a day of finals last Saturday. Keith was last champion in 2016 but for Nicol it was a first time success.
David Joel, as defending champion and leading qualifier with scores of 68 and 65 and Keith 63 and 71,were seeded first and second in the draw to set up a repeat final of 2016 but when Joel went out in the second round on the final green to club secretary Ewan Forbes, who then lost to Keiran MacKay at the 19th in the semi-final, it set up a men's final between two 22-year-olds.
Following tradition, the Inverness club scratch final is over 36 holes and it became a trial of four nines. Keith raced away to a five-hole lead through the first nine holes of the morning round, only to be pegged back to just a one-hole lead through eight of the inward holes.
MacKay had won the 10th with birdie and the next hole where his opponent inadvertently moved his ball in the rough with his caddy-car. Although losing the 12th to par, MacKay then won the 13th,15th and 16th holes.
A bunkered second shot by MacKay on the 18th gave Keith a two-hole lead before the break for lunch and the start of the second 18 holes. Again Keith came out of the blocks at speed and had reinstated his five-hole lead by the ninth green. This time there was to be no recovery from MacKay and holed birdie putts on the 10th and 11th and greens increased Keith's lead to seven.
The loss of the next hole to a MacKay birdie was answered by the overall better player on the day with a deserved championship winning birdie 2 on the 13th green and a 7 and 5 winning margin.
The 18-hole men's handicap final finished on the penultimate hole where first time winner Kevin Carpenter won three of the first four inward half holes to establish a two- hole lead and despite losing a ball on the par three 15th hole won back the next hole to beat William MacKay by 2 and 1.
Like the men's champion, first time ladies champion June Nicol enjoyed as easy path to her win. She won her tough test in the semi-final beating former champion Marion Howieson 5 and 4.
In the final against Alison Gowie, June cruised to a 12th hole win. The ladies handicap winner Anne Morrison had to go an extra two holes before she overcame Ruth Mackenzie on the par three second hole.
Already junior champion at his second club, Nairn,  promising teenager Calum Daun (14) had qualified in sixth place for the men's championship but went out to semi-finalist Ruaridh Greenwood. Making it all the way to the final of the junior final, Calum doubled up beating clubmate Ewan Cuthbert (14). In the junior handicap final Seth Anderson (13) beat Conor Moran (15) after three extra holes.

Inverness’s talented juniors with their championship trophies. Left to right – Seth Anderson  (13), junior  handicap winner, Calum Daun (14), junior scratch winner, Ewan Cuthbert (15),  junior scratch runner-up, Conor Moran(15), handicap runner-up.

North Golf News Round-up from Robin Wilson

Braid Open at Brora
Prizewinning group from the Royal Marine Hotel Open at Brora. Left to right  – Peter Stanbrook (captain, James Braid Society), Iain Powell (James Braid Trophy), Ken Lorimer (captain, Brora GC), Alastair MacDonald (Royal Marine Hotel Trophy), William MacBeath (Golspie), Roddie Cameron( Kidd Cup), Fraser Oliver (Duke of Sutherland Cup).

Local five handicapper Alastair MacDonald had his first big break through in tournament golf when he won the Royal Marine Hotel Trophy in the James Braid 36-hole Open at Brora at the weekend. The scratch Braid Trophy was won for the first time by Inverness's David Joel.
MacDonald, who plays of five, held his own against the morning CSS of 72, a rise of two against the regulation 70. In an ever increasing wind and on slick putting greens his halves of 38 and 37, began with a bogey 5. He did not manage a birdie in his gross 75 but 5 was the highest figure on his card.
A change to his second-round card saw a 7 marked down for the third hole and his only birdie of the day came two holes later. That rescued an outward 40 with a 6 at the 8th hole. Holding onto what he had, MacDonald got back to the clubhouse in 38 more blows to post a net 73 and a 36-hole nett 143.
The total was matched by two-handicapper and no stranger to trophies, clubmate and more experienced Roddie Cameron who had to cope with even tougher conditions, golf balls moving on the greens and almost calling for a halt in play during Cameron's inward 39 for 75, which was the deciding factor when the second round cards were scrutinised to find the overall nett winner.
But Cameron did not end his day without silverware. His matching net aggregate was rewarded with the Kidd Cup in the low handicap category and from this section and with the handicap of plus two came scratch winner Joel.
With a 7am start and playing in the company of two greenkeepers, local James MacBeath and Wick's Dougie Thorburn, the Inverness member who was defending his Inverness club championship title at the beginning of the week. His defence was curtailed by the Inverness club secretary Ewan Forbes in Round 2, thus enabling him enter the Brora event.
Joel saw off the green keepers and the field behind him with an opening one under par 69 (33-36), finishing his round in reverse. Instead of par 4 and 3, he went birdie 3, bogey 4.  Thorburn lay second with 71 while MacBeath was still in the mix with 74.  Royal Dornoch's Chris Mailley, defending the Howey Cup ,was also 33 for his first nine holes but his second nine finished with three fives and 38 for his 71.
Although Joel's second round rose by six shots his gross aggregate of 144 held off Mailley who added a 74, for 145, and Thorburn a 75 for one more.  MacBeath a 75 for 149 and forth place and Royal Dornoch's Liam MacDonald-MacLeod 77/74 for the fifth place voucher.
In addition to the James Braid Society in attendance, there was also a bus group from Perthshire swelling the numbers. Iain Powell (Murcar Links) won the Society's confined James Braid Trophy with scores of 74 and 83 while, in the higher handicap section, Fraser Oliver (Dunblane) captured the Duke of Sutherland Cup with a net total of 148, playing off a 17 handicap.

Golspie Club Championship.

A big first time win for Colin “Scooty” Sutherland in the final of the Golspie Golf Club championship last weekend while with her ninth win Sheila Robertson is just one away from double figures, her first win in 1982.
The four qualifiers for the men's championship paired the young Danny Doogan against the leading qualifier and former champion Alastair MacDougall and in the other semi final Sutherland came up against the father, Steve Doogan.
The Doogan household already with early season successes were lining up an all family final after Doogan junior beat McDougall 3 ans 2. But there was not to be a first time Doogan name on the Bell Cup when Colin Sutherland overcame Doogan senior in his semi-final then went on to complete the double with a 16th green win over young Danny in the final.
Sheila Robertson, for loyal service and lifetime achievements, was given life membership of the club last year, a year that saw her failing to qualify for the women's scratch championship but proceed to win the handicap title. Puting that to right she  regaining the title after her eighth success in 2016 with a comfortable ninth win in this year's scratch final.

Continental players dominate stroke-
play qualifying at Southport

NEWS RELEASE
Elin Esborn produced a fine round of 70 in the searing heat of Southport to finish as leading qualifier for the match play stage of the 115th Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship at Hillside.
The Swede was joined at the top on one-under-par by Esther Henseleit and Elodie Chapelet but will take the honours on countback.
144 elite women’s amateur golfers from 24 countries across Europe, Asia-Pacific arrived at the Southport course on Monday to take part in the first stage of the Championship which sees each player compete in two rounds of 18 hole stroke play. The 64 lowest scores over the 36 progress to the match-play stage.
Esborn, who attends the University of Florida in the United States, came into the event on the back of two top-five finishes on the college golf circuit. The 21-year-old was on a roll after carding six birdies after 13 holes. At six-under-par for the day, she ran into trouble at the par-5 17th to sign for a triple-bogey 8 and followed that with another bogey on the final hole. It was enough to see her lead the pack with no one making a move in the afternoon.
Henseleit, 39th in the World Amateur Golf RankingTM, relied on her first round score of 70 to keep her near the top as stroke play qualifying reached its conclusion. The German, who recorded a top five finish at the Spanish Ladies Amateur Championship in March, made four bogeys and three birdies for a one-over-par 73 and a combined 36-hole score of 143.
A stunning eagle at the 11th hole was the highlight of Chapelet’s second round of 75. The French golfer, like Henseleit, struggled to recapture the form she displayed on Tuesday when recorded a four-under-par 68.
Two players celebrated holes-in-one; Romy Meekers of the Netherlands supplied the championship’s first at the 10th hole, which was followed up by England’s Hannah Screen on the 4th later in the afternoon.
With an aggregate score of 290, Germany won the international team award, which is traditionally presented after the stroke play qualifying rounds.
The cut for the top 64 players fell at ten-under-par. The match play stage gets underway tomorrow at Hillside. For tee times, scoring and news from the Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship visit www.RandA.org.
The winner receives exemptions into the 2018 Ricoh Women's British Open, the 2018 Evian Championship, the 2019 US Women's Open and the 2019 Augusta National Women's Amateur Championship.
Admission to the Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship, which is played from Tuesday, June 26 to Saturday, June 30, is free of charge.
Key Quotes:
Elin Esborn, Sweden (-1)
“I feel like the competition restarts tomorrow. It’s going to be fun to play match play. At the 17th I had a triple and at the 18th I had a bogey. I didn’t really commit to my shots and recorded a high score but I’m pretty happy with my round.
“I have played in this event the last two year, so I am kind of experienced now. I like that you get a new opportunity at every hole in match play and I think it’s exciting to try and beat someone or try not to get beat!
“I don’t play a lot of links golf so that first of all a big thing. It’s a great event. To get into the Ricoh Women British Open would be incredible."
Esther Henseleit, Germany (-1)
“I’m really happy that I played that well out there the past two days, I’m really happy with my game. I’ve been making a lot of putts, making birdies and I feel quite comfortable going into the match play. I hope I will continue to play well.
“I made some really good iron shots and holed four three-metre putts for birdie. My eagle was quite lucky because I hit a really bad drive, but it kicked very well to leave me a seven iron into the green on the par five. That was quite an easy hole and I holed my putt from 10 metres so quite lucky but I’ll take it.
“I really love links golf. You need to play really smart and don’t hit into many bunkers because you always lose one shot but I really like it. The conditions today were very good and so it was possible to play well.
“I think this is one of the biggest and greatest tournaments in Europe. I’ve really enjoyed it and I will hopefully enjoy it for the next few days because it’s a great tournament.”
Elodie Chapelet, France (-1)
“This is really exciting. My goal when I came here was to make the cut but now I’m high on the leaderboard it’s really cool.
“The eagle (at the 11th) really helped me for the rest of the round. I was struggling a little bit in the beginning, but the eagle helped me. I hit five wood twice on the par 5 to the green, made a long putt right to left so it was really good.
“It’s really cool to be playing here, it’s so impressive to have all these good players around me and very exciting. That would be amazing (to play at the Ricoh Women’s British Open), a massive bonus.”

Six birdies in a row push Chris Curran into halfway lead at Scottish Young Pros' Championship

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Bathgate's Chris Curran, pictured, shot six consecutive birdies, from the third to the eighth, in a second-round, four-under-par 67 which lifted him a stroke clear of the field at the halfway stage of the Scottish Young Professionals Championship at West Lothian Golf Club today.
Curran's 36-hole tally of six-under 136 still has Myles Cunningham (Gullane) (67-70) and Sam Binning (Mearns Castle) (71-67) snapping at his heels and Tom Higson (Gleneagles) (67-71), Zack Saltman (Winterfield) (68-70) and Graeme McDouall (Elie Links (70-68) are by no means out of it on 138.
Banchory assistant Andrew Pillans, co-first-round leader with a 67, slipped back to a 74 for 141 and is joint ninth. He started badly - bogey at first, double bogey at the second - and finished badly with bogeys at the 14th, 16th and 18th
