Carmen Griffths salvages an 80 with a inward 

half of 35 in Under-16s' championship

Aboyne's Carmen Griffiths had the misfortune to run up a 9 at the par-4 fifth hole in the first round of the Loretto Scottish Under-16 girls' championship at Murrayfield Golf Club where fog forced a suspension of play for a time.

Carmen , pictured, did not let the early setback upset her unduly. After reaching the turn in 45 shots, Griffiths, who won the Aberdeenshire women's county championship earlier this summer,  came storming home in only 35 strokes to salvage a creditable score of 80 over the Edinburgh course whose ladies par of 73, was not matched by any player in the international field. 
Griffiths birdied the 14 and 18th to finish the first day in a share of 12th place with Megan Docherty (Bishopbriggs).
The leading Scot in this category is Eilidh Henderson (Loretto) who was level par until she had a double bogey 6 at the 16th. She finished the day with a two-over-par 75, only one shot behind the French leader, Carla Grechi.
Next best Scots were Rachel Foster (Prestwick St Nicholas) who had four birdies in her 77, a score matched by Evanna Hynd (Elmwood).
