Helen Lowe tames winds for second English senior title at 

Belton Park, Lincolnshire

Senior England international Helen Lowe overcame a six-shot deficit – and strong winds - to win her second national championship. 

She claimed the English senior stroke play title with an impressive final round of one-over par at Belton Park Golf Club in Lincolnshire. 

“I can’t believe I’ve done, I really can’t,” said Lowe, from Scraptoft in Leicestershire. She won by four shots from Norfolk’s Tracey Williamson (Royal Cromer).

“This is tremendously important to me. It’s something you dream of and I don’t think I’ve won a stroke-play event before. Putting three decent rounds together is quite an achievement!” 

Lowe wasn’t on top form as she approached the event, but some lessons did the trick. As 30mph winds challenged the contestants during rounds two and three, she produced steady play. 

“It was hard work playing off,” remarked Lowe, who won the English senior amateur championship in 2015. 

“I’ve been trying to get some rhythm going and get my confidence back – this should help!” 

After the first round Lowe was eight shots off the lead set by Tracey Williamson (Royal Cromer) who went round in two-under 71. 

Williamson was blown off course in round two and Yorkshire’s Karen Jobling moved to the top of the leaderboard, five ahead of the field and six ahead of Lowe. 

Jobling faded in the final day’s winds and had to settle for third place after Williamson birdied the last to secure the runners-up spot on her own. 

Defending champion Jackie Foster (Bishops Stortford) had been hoping to complete a hat trick of wins. She left herself too much to do in the final round, but still managed a top ten finish
