Irish students Mullarney and Ryan win R and A

Scholars'  tournament at St Andrews

Ronan Mullarney, 22, pictured right, maintained the success of Maynooth University, Ireland students in the R and A Foundation Scholars' 54-hole tournament, winning by four strokes with a total of four-under-par 208, made up of rounds of 67 and 71 over the par 70 Eden Course and a par 72 over the Old Course at St Andrews.
The highest-placed Scot in the big field was George Burns (St Andrews) who shared second place on 212 with Robert Foley (St Andrews) and Jack Cope (Stirling).
Burns had five birdies in a 70 over the Old Course following scores of 73 and 69 at the Eden.
Stirling student Michael Lawrie, younger son of the 1999 Open champion, shared 14th place on 220 with scores of 75, 74 and 71.

Northern Ireland's Chloe Ryan, left, a student at a Madrid college, overtook leader Gemma Batty (Stirling) with a final round over the Old Course of 73, four fewer than Gemma. Ryan totalled 218, highlighted by birdies at the 12th, 13th and 17th in her final round.
Batty had a disastrous final round of 77 which included double bogeys at the 14th and 15th.
Hazel MacGarvie (Stirling) finished third on 223.
