R and A Scholars' Tournament over 54 holes

Mullarney and Batty lead individual events over Eden Course

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Ireland's Maynooth University provided the winners of both the men's and women's tournaments in last year's R and A Scholars Tournament at St Andrews and it looks as if the Co Kildare college will again take home the men's title this year.
Ronan Mullarney (Maynooth) leads by three strokes after rounds of 67 and 71 for 138.
Team-mate Eugene Smith (70-71) is sharing second place with Reece Samson (Tournament Golf College) (69-72).
Gemma Batty (Stirling) leads the women's event with scores of 74 and 69 for three-under-par 143. She had two eagle 2s and five birdies in her second round in which she also bogeyed the 14th, 16th and 17th to reduce her lead to two strokes from Madrid-based Chloe Ryan from Northern Ireland. Chloe has scored 73 and 72.
Stirling's Hazel MacGarvie is in third place on 147 with scores of 72 and 75. After birdieing the first, third, 10th, 12th and 13th in her second round, Hazel lost the plot with bogeys at the 15th and 16th, then a triple bogey 7 at the17th.

The third and final round in both competitions will be played over the St Andrews Old Course on Tuesday morning.
