Liam Johnston and Fern Clark lead after Day 2 of Stirling Students' International at St Andrews

By BEN PHILIP
High winds swept across the Torrance course at Fairmont St Andrews for the second round of the 7th Stirling International as Fern Clark (St Andrews) and Liam Johnston (Scottish Golf) rose to the top of the leaderboards.

The women’s competition saw Clark establish a four stroke lead after the shooting a birdie-laden 71 for a two-under-par tally.
Overnight leader Cassie Kneen (St Andrews) is Clark’s nearest challenger, an 80 leaving her two over for the tournament. Stirling’s Mirren Fraser rounds out the top three, an 81 giving her a two-round total of 153, +5 for the tournament. The performances of Clark and Kneen have seen St. Andrew’s second team continue to lead the team competition with Thursday’s final round seeing the top nine compete for the titles.

The men’s competition saw a number of strong performances at the top of the leaderboard with Robert Foley (Stirling) shooting a round of the day 69, to move up to second at one under for the tournament.
Early in the day, Craig Howie (Scottish Golf) had extended his lead at the top of the standings during the front nine, but five dropped shots coming home leave him at one under, three shots off the lead. The pole position is held by Liam Johnston, pictured, who followed up his steady opening level par 72 with a two-under 70, which included an outward 33 and a rare eagle at the seventh hole.
Johnston and Howie underpin a very strong performance from the Scottish Golf team who lead the team competition by seven strokes from the Stirling first team, who are a further 24 shots ahead of St. Andrews. With the leading groups going off from 10.20am, it is set to be an exciting finish to the competition.

Shannon McWilliam and Hannah McCook in top 10 at North Berwick

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Aboyne's Shannon McWilliam is in joint sixth place in a field of 90 players at the end of the first day of the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship at North Berwick.

Shannon, pictured, shot a one-over-par 74 on a day when the course was playing long, the CSS was 78 and only one player, Hannah Screen (Berkhamsted), broke par. The English player leads by two with a 71, the group of four on the 73 mark including defending champion Sophie Lamb (Clitheroe).
Even the player who had a hole in one, Germany's Yvonne Schrumpf, found it very difficult to salvage pars. She had her ace at the par-3 sixth but she ended the day with a 97, occupying last place overnight. Her scorecard had two 10s and one 9 in halves of 50-47.
McWilliam managed only one birdie, at the long eighth, but she limited "the damage" to bogeys at two short holes, the fourth and 15th.
Hannah McCook (Grantown on Spey) also made the top ten overnight with a 75 for a share of ninth place. Highlight of her card was an eagle 2 at the 16th in halves of 40 and 35.
Chloe Goadby (St Regulus_ had double bogeys at the 15th and 17th which wiped out her four birdies as she returned a 79 for a share of 29th place.
Kimberley Beveridge (Aboyne) have five double bogeys in halves of 44 and 40 for an 84 and a share of 62nd place.

Stirling International students' tournament

The 7th Stirling International teed off the new student golf season at Fairmont St Andrews with early rain giving way to sunshine on the Fife coast. As the first event of the SSS/BUCS Tour, this was a chance to lay down a marker for the season, a chance that Cassie Kneen (St Andrews) and Craig Howie (Scottish Golf) certainly took.

In the women’s competition, there were a number of new faces in the draw making their presence felt. These women were led by American Kneen, who, after a bogey at the first, had four birdies on the front nine to reach the turn at three under, a further two birdies on the back helping her to a first round score of 70, four under par.
Leading the chasers was another first-year student , Mirren Fraser (Stirling), her solid two under par featuring three birdies. Rounding out the first round podium is second year Fern Clark (St. Andrews), who reached the turn sharing the lead with Kneen, before dropping back to +1 for the tournament.

The men’s side of the draw sees a more experienced line-up at the top of the leaderboard where the round of the day saw Howie, a former Stirling student, shoot a very impressive 3 under par 69, to lead by two strokes.
He is being chased by his Scottish Golf team-mate, Greg Dalziel, who mixed five birdies with a few dropped shots to sit at one under par. They are followed by six golfers who all shot level par, representing four different institutions, showcasing the growing depth at the top end of the student golfing programme.

Round two commenced at 8am Wednesday with a cut at the end of the day to the top 45 men and nine women.
