Shannon McWilliam and Hannah McCook in top 10 at North Berwick

Aboyne's Shannon McWilliam is in joint sixth place in a field of 90 players at the end of the first day of the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship at North Berwick.

Shannon, pictured, shot a one-over-par 74 on a day when the course was playing long, the CSS was 78 and only one player, Hannah Screen (Berkhamsted), broke par. The English player leads by two with a 71, the group of four on the 73 mark including defending champion Sophie Lamb (Clitheroe).
Even the player who had a hole in one, Germany's Yvonne Schrumpf, found it very difficult to salvage pars. She had her ace at the par-3 sixth but she ended the day with a 97, occupying last place overnight. Her scorecard had two 10s and one 9 in halves of 50-47.
McWilliam managed only one birdie, at the long eighth, but she limited "the damage" to bogeys at two short holes, the fourth and 15th.
Hannah McCook (Grantown on Spey) also made the top ten overnight with a 75 for a share of ninth place. Highlight of her card was an eagle 2 at the 16th in halves of 40 and 35.
Chloe Goadby (St Regulus_ had double bogeys at the 15th and 17th which wiped out her four birdies as she returned a 79 for a share of 29th place.
Kimberley Beveridge (Aboyne) have five double bogeys in halves of 44 and 40 for an 84 and a share of 62nd place.
