Sebastian Munoz leads Greenbrier Classic as Davis Love III stays in hunt   By Keith JacksonSKYSPORTS.COM

Sebastian Munoz opened up a three-shot advantage at the halfway stage of the Greenbrier Classic as veteran Davis Love III remained in contention in West Virginia.
Munoz surpassed Love as clubhouse leader after a late barrage of birdies on the opening day saw him fire a sparkling nine-under 61, and he added a resolute 67 on day two over the Old White TPC at Sulphur Springs despite faltering over the second half of his round.
The Columbian, who is languishing at 198th in the FedExCup standings after posting just one top-30 finish in his 11 starts this season, began with a birdie at the 10th and rolled in a superb 30-foot putt for another at the long 12th.

Further birdie putts dropped from outside 20 feet at the 13th and 16th as Munoz raced clear of the chasing pack on 13 under, although he then found the going tougher on the front nine as he three-putted the third green before a poor drive at the sixth cost him another shot.
But Munoz bounced back with a birdie 3 at the next after clipping a superb approach to 12 feet from a fairway bunker, and he scrambled a battling par at his final hole to remain three clear of the field on 12 under par.
Hudson Swafford birdied two of the last three holes to return a flawless 66 and earn a share of second with fellow American Ben Martin (67), while Love is a further stroke adrift after an erratic 69.

Love, last year's winning Ryder Cup captain, now 53, bogeyed the 11th - his second - before reeling off three straight birdies only to make further mistakes at 15 and 17, where he three-putted from 40 feet, although he atoned immediately by holing from similar range for a bonus birdie at the 18th.
Love came within a whisker of holing his 170-yard approach to the second, and he set up another tap-in birdie with a sublime second to the fourth before he lost ground on Munoz when he needed three putts to get down at the eighth.
The former PGA champion closed on eight under alongside Danny Lee and Shell Houston Open champion Russell Henley, who carded seven birdies in an excellent 64 which matched Jamie Lovemark and Nick Watney for the low round of the day.

Ryder Cup star Patrick Reed was flirting with the cut when he slipped to three over for the day with seven holes to play and appeared to be struggling with a back issue, but he got back on track with four birdies in five holes to salvage a 69.
Reed is seven off the lead and one ahead of two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson, who showed glimpses of his best after a torrid season so far as he carded a five-birdie 67.
Phil Mickelson's much-publicised first tournament with his brother on his bag almost ended in an early exit as he mixed three birdies with five bogeys to hand in a 72, but that proved enough to scrape into the weekend with nothing to spare.

Bradley Neil only Scot to make the cut in Prague

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Rhys Enoch’s second-round 67 gave him the halfway lead at the Prague Golf Challenge on 12 under par, one shot ahead of Julien Guerrier and Garrick Porteous, as Round Two was able to be completed following a late storm delay.
Bradley Neil (pictured below) was the only Scot to make the cut.

Welshman Enoch was one shot off Rourke van der Spuy’s overnight lead and continued that scoring on Day Two, mixing five birdies with an eagle to reach 12 under par for his first 36 holes.
By his own admission, the season so far has not gone Enoch’s way, with just one cut made – coincidentally in the Czech Republic six weeks ago – before this strong display around Prague City Golf.
“It went really well today,” said the 29 year old. “I started off in some tricky conditions early on, it was humid and rainy so it was a bit of a struggle to start but after I got through that I started to play really nicely.
“It was sort of the same as yesterday. I holed my approach to the first, a nice little eight iron, and that really kickstarted my round, got things going, and I’m really happy to have got in at 12 under.
“The course really suits my game because there’s a lot of bunkers I can take out of play, and I’m hitting it well and hitting it long so that’s making it a lot easier – there’s a 650-yard par five and I’m hitting a three iron into it, eight or nine irons into a couple of the other ones, that makes it easy too.
“This just seems to suit my eye. It is wide open, which I don’t usually like because I find it hard to be specific with targets, but there’s a lot of humps and things that make it a bit easier and I just feel really comfortable.
“It’s been a little while coming, this kind of performance, but I’ve been playing really nicely and just making three or four silly bogeys a round which has been stopping me shooting the low numbers.
“It feels like a crunch point in the season, approaching halfway. If you’d told me I’d be in this position this far into the season, how well I feel I’m playing, I wouldn’t have believed you.
“I’ve just got to try to put that good play into good results and start moving up the board, and this performance is encouraging – I played lovely at Open Qualifying on Tuesday and just missed out so I knew I was playing well coming in here.”
Enoch’s nearest challengers on 11 under par are Guerrier, the Frenchman currently fourth on the Road to Oman following victory at last month’s Hauts de France Golf Open, and Porteous of England.
One shot behind them are Steven Brown, Bryce Easton and Ricardo Santos, with 72 players making it through to the weekend after the cut fell at three under par.

Jensen tops Logan Trophy leaderboard

 sq_jensen
Woburn’s Steve Jensen shot two-under par 68 to take the first round lead in the Logan Trophy at Beau Desert Golf Club in Staffordshire.
He was the only competitor to beat par in the first round of the English men’s open mid-amateur championship, as the demanding heathland course kept its defences firmly in place with fiery fairways and undulating greens.
“I fought hard to keep the score going,” he said – revealing that he was motivated by the sight of his name at the top of the on-course leaderboards.

He’d enjoyed the experience once before, when he was leading after the first 15 holes of final qualifying for the European Senior Tour … but it didn’t last.

“This time I was determined to stay there, that was my motivation, to keep looking at my name,” he laughed. “That was my mind set.”

Jensen (pictured top) worked for his score: “This is a very, very unforgiving golf course, anything which is not on line, whether it’s a putt or a drive or an iron shot, is severely punished. It’s very bouncy out there, it’s like playing links golf,” he said.

“But I didn’t make any fatal errors and I putted well,” he remarked. “The greens are very difficult but I got the pace.”

Jensen, a past club champion at Woburn, started and finished with a birdie and managed to add four more during the round, alongside four bogeys.

He holds a two shot lead over the field. Matt Wilcox (North Hants) is his closest challenger with his round of level par 70, which also included six birdies. Anthony Harwood (Blackburn) lies third on one-over while Andrew Francis (Bearsted) is a further stroke back. Behind them is a group of 10 players on 73 with a further 11 on 74.

Defending champion Jorg Paulus is nursing a bad back which makes him loth to hit out and he returned an opening 81. However, he noted that Beau Desert is the 492nd course he has played, as he works his way towards his target of 1000. In the year since he won the championship he has added 48 to his tally.

The most spectacular shot of the day was played by Tony Lord of Northamptonshire County (right) who had a hole-in-one on the 167-yard third. It was his sixth ace, all scored in competition.

He used a seven-iron – and almost repeated the feat with the same club on the short 17th where the ball stopped within three inches of the cup. Lord returned 75 for the round remarking: “It’s a beautiful golf course, lovely, but it’s a tough test.”

Rory misses the cut in Irish Open

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Benjamin Hebert and Daniel Im will share a one-shot lead heading into the weekend at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Hosted by the Rory Foundation after another low-scoring day at Portstewart Golf Club.
But now on the sidelines is the tournament host and title-holder, Rory McIlroy, who missed the cut by several shots with a 73 for one-over-par 145 ... five shots too many to beat the cut.
Hebert and I'm  came into day two one shot ahead of the pack and remained there after both firing rounds of 67 to get to 13 under and lead the way from World Number 11 Jon Rahm.

The Spaniard also carded a 67 and he found himself a shot ahead of English duo Oliver Fisher and Matthew Southgate, and New Zealander Ryan Fox.

Starting from the tenth, Rahm opened with a birdie and while he dropped a shot on the 12th, he took advantage of the back-to-back par fives, eagling the 14th and birdieing the 15th.

Im also birdied the tenth and added further gains on 17th and first before dropping a shot on the third and when Rahm birdied the 18th with an approach to three feet, he led on his own.

A bogey on the first dropped Rahm back to ten under and that was a three-way tie as Hebert bounced back from a bogey on the 11th with a hat-trick of gains from the 12th.

A Rahm birdie on the second edged him back ahead but Im birdied the sixth and despite a heavy-handed third on the par four seventh, Im had the lead thanks to an impressive putt.

A poor second shot and a three-putt on the fourth from Rahm handed Im a two-shot lead but Rahm responded from 18 feet on the next before Im birdied the ninth, with his 47 putts over 36 holes the lowest total of the season so far.

Rahm then took advantage of the par five seventh to cut the lead to one and put himself in an excellent position heading into the weekend.

Hebert bogeyed the first but a lengthy putt on the third got him back into double figures and when he made back-to-back birdies on the sixth and seventh for the second day in a row, he was just one back.

A beautiful approach to the ninth then secured a seventh birdie of the day and it was as you were at the top.

Fox missed out on a place at the Open Championship by one shot at last week's HNA Open de France but was once again in contention for one of the three spots available.

He made four birdies in a row from the 13th and bounced back from a bogey on the first with an excellent right-to-lefter on the second before making further gains on the sixth and seventh.

Southgate claimed an emotional fourth-place at this event last season to secure his card less than 12 months after recovering from testicular cancer and he stayed bogey-free for the week in his 68.

He started with a birdie on the tenth and then made 14 pars before eagling from 20 feet on the seventh and making a birdie on the next.

Fisher turned in level par 36 from the tenth but came to life on the front nine with birdies on the first, second, fourth and sixth.

American Paul Peterson was then at ten under after a second consecutive round of 67.

World Number Two Hideki Matsuyama was level par for his round after 13 holes but birdied four of his last five to get to nine under alongside fellow Japanese Hideto Tanihara who was bogey-free in carding the round of the day with a 65.

Scot David Drysdale and England's Anthony Wall were also at nine under, a shot ahead of a group containing former champions Jamie Donaldson and Søren Kjelden, and two ahead of Padraig Harrington and Justin Rose.

Paul Lawrie and Marc Warren missed the cut and so too did tournament host and defending champion Rory McIlroy who had a 73 for one-over 145. Only players with 36-hole tallies of five-under 140 and better survived.

Rory McIlroy commented:
“I'm really disappointed. The last two times the Irish Open has been in Northern Ireland, I’ve not been playing at the weekend - it's obviously not where I want to be.

“It's been a really frustrating year. It just hasn't really gone the way I wanted it to. And it's been tough but I felt like I was playing well coming in here.
“I played a lot of links golf last week. I was shooting good scores, I was confident. Just when I needed to play well and shoot the scores that I was shooting last week, it wasn't quite there.
So it’s just back to the drawing board and practise a bit and get ready for next week in Scotland.
“It's definitely not a normal week for me but I'm proud to be part of this tournament and I'm proud to say that we started with a 2.5 or 3 million Euro prize fund and now it's up to 7 million and it's part of the Rolex Series.

“So the tournament has become a much bigger tournament, not just because of my involvement, but the European Tour’s and everyone else that's been involved at Dubai Duty Free. It has become a bigger tournament. I just wish I could be a part of it over the weekend.
“It will still be a great week for the Foundation and it will be a success no matter what. Disappointing individually for me but we’ll probably raise – even with no prize money from me – the guts of half a million, maybe more, so we’ll still be able to do that and it’s for a great cause.”

Four Scots make Pro Golf Tour cut

All four Scots in the field - Chris Robb (136), Sam Kiloh (137), Kevin Duncan (139) and Philip McLean (141) - made the second-round cut on the Pro Golf Tour's Sparkassen Open at Bochum Golf Club, Germany today.
Hinrich Arkenhau (Germany) leads by six shots after two great rounds of 59 and 65 for 20-under-par 124.

Oldcorn shares Swiss Seniors Open

lead with a 63

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS

Clark Dennis, Mark Mouland and Andrew Oldcorn (pictured right) fired first-round scores of 63 to take a share of the lead after the first round of the Swiss Seniors Open.
The trio carded rounds of seven under par, with two eagles and 20 birdies between them in glorious conditions at Golf Club Bad Ragaz.
Oldcorn, winner of last year’s WINSTONgolf Senior Open, made nine birdies, the highest number of the day, and two bogeys as he took the clubhouse lead on seven under par.
“I’m very pleased, but I’m also exhausted,” said Oldcorn. “We were struggling on the last few holes with the heat, but I’m delighted with how I played and delighted to start the tournament like that.
“I made a small mistake on number six, I bogeyed that after a good start. Whenever I had any chances, I really hit my wedges close, which you have to do around this course. All my chances were within six feet. I was hanging on a bit at the end.
“As good as I was playing out there, when I got to seven under, I started thinking about 11 under. I know it sounds silly, but that’s the way I was playing. It’s very rare you get into a situation where you are seven under through 12 holes.”
Mouland was two shots adrift before an eagle on the par five 16th hole saw him draw level, and the Welshman narrowly missed a birdie on the last for the outright lead on eight under par.
Although disappointed not to move ahead, Mouland was pleased with his overall performance.

Aboyne's Jamie Gibb wins Paul Lawrie NE

Under-14 boys' title after nine-hole decision

Under-14 scratch winner Jamie Gibb (left), handicap winner Ethan Main (right).

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Prolonged rain that flooded parts of the Newburgh-on-Ythan golf course forced the organisers to reduce the Paul Lawrie North-east District Under-14s boys' championship to nine holes after there was no improvement in conditions during an hour's suspension of play from 1.05pm.
The last three boys in the draw had played 10 holes when play was halted.
The scratch winner was Jamie Gibb (Aboyne) who plays off 11 and will be 13 years old next month. He shot level par 36 for the first nine holes - very good scoring in the conditions.
He won by two from Ethan Main (Murcar Links) who won the leading handicap award with a net score of 32 off six (half his handicap).
No player can win two prizes so, with Main moving over the net scores list, Fraser Laird (Alford) moved up to take second scratch place with 39. Laird also won the Under-12 scratch title.
Calum Bruce (Deeside) finished third in the scratch list with a score of 42, having a better last three-hole score than Murray Sinclair (Portlethen) who also covered the outward half in 42.
Nathan Mackie (Aboyne) finished second in the handicap section with 33 off 10, and Koby Buchan (Cruden Bay) came third with 34.5 off 10.5.
The Under-18 boys' match-play championship final between Cameron Black (Royal Aberdeen) and Brad Murray (Inverallochy) will be rearranged for a later date. Black beat Ruari Mair (Buckpool) 4 and 3 and Murray beat Liam Strath (Hazlehead) by two holes in the morning semi-finals.

Play suspended in Paul Lawrie NE U14 and U18 boys golf at Newburgh

Play was suspended at 1.05pm in the Paul Lawrie North-east District U14 boys' championship and also the Under-18s match-play championship at Newburgh on Ythan Golf Club where it has rained nonstop since early morning.
The greens, with the exception of the 15th and 16th, are coping very well but some of the fairways have areas under water.
"We are asking the players to mark their golf balls where they are at the suspension with the hope that the rain will eventually stop and they can finish their rounds," said NE District president David Fleming.

It's Black v Murray for Paul Lawrie NE U18 boys match-play final at rainy Newburgh

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Cameron Black (Royal Aberdeen) will play Brad Murray (Inverallochy) this afternoon in the final of the Paul Lawrie North-east Under-18 boys' match-play championship at Newburgh on Ythan Golf Club.
In this morning's semi-finals, played in a steady drizzle, Black
beat Ruari Mair (Buckpool) by 4 and 3 in the first semi-final and Murray beat Liam Strath (Hazlehead) by two holes.
Black, winner of the stroke-play title at the same venue on Thursday, was two up at the turn and virtually clinched his place in the final by winning the 10th, 11th and 12th. He was one under par for the holes played.
Murray (Inverallochy), out in 41, was one up at the turn but Strath, who recently helped Hazlehead to win the Maitland Shield, pulled him back to all square after 13.
Murray went one up again at the 15th, lost the 16th  but won the 17th and 18th for the match.

Hebert and Im share lead at Irish Open halfway but Rahm is on their tail

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Benjamin Hebert and Daniel Im will share a one-shot lead heading into the weekend at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open hosted by the Rory Foundation after another low-scoring day at Portstewart Golf Club in Northern Ireland.
The duo came into day two one shot ahead of the pack and remained there after both firing rounds of 67 to get to 13 under and lead the way from World Number 11 Jon Rahm.
