Euan McNeill and Michael McLennan are victorious at Greenock Whinhill

The picturesque Greenock Whinhill Golf Club was the setting for the playing of the Renfrewshire Golf Union Boys and Youths Stroke Play Championship for 2017.
The course, as usual, was a test for those taking part, and with the poor recent wet weather the course was very heavy with little run available, but the greens were in superb condition. This was reflected in the majority of the scoring on the day with the CSS moving to 70 from the normal SSS of 68.
The events, previously 36 holes competitions were reduced to 18 holes due to various issues, but nonetheless produced worthy winners in both events.
In the boys' Caven Trophy Euan McNeill (pictured right) of Lochwinnoch Golf Club was the winner with a gross score of 74 despite dropping  three strokes over the last two holes. He has been a stalwart in the Renfrewshire boys' team this year, being undefeated in all four  matches played, and hopes to further his golf at the University of the Highlands and Islands based in Dornoch.
In the youth category for the Menzies Trophy home players were always going to feature as this is a course you really need to know to score well.
First to post a score was current Whinhill club champion, Jamie Sinnamon with a score of 2 over par 70 despite running up a 7 at the final hole. He held the lead until one of his fellow club members, Michael McLennan, pictured below, left,  came in with the round of the day, a one under par 67 and with his 4 handicap will be the recipient of a major handicap cut.
The eight qualifiers in both events go forward to the RGU Match Play Championships with the Boys event being played over Kilmacolm Golf Club and the Youths at Renfrew Golf Club.

Full results of both Competitions can be found on Howdidido at Renfrewshire Golf Union, with the Draws for the Match Play on the RGU web site.

The Caven Trophy was sponsored once again by Paisley based family run company STRATHAND SECURITY and we thank them for their continued support of the event.

The courtesy of Greenock Whinhill Golf Club and they hospitality that they provided was much appreciated and also to Inverclyde Council for the generosity given to the Renfrewshire Golf Union in allowing them to play the event here was much appreciated by all who took part.
