Hugues Joannes shot a five under par 66 to leap up the leaderboard and share a three-way lead at the halfway point of the Swiss Challenge presented by Association Suisse de Golf on the European Challenge Tour.
Coming back this morning to finish his second round after a rain-affected day two at Golf Sempachersee, the Belgian made a very quick start in Lucerne picking up a birdie on the ninth – his third hole of the day – to reach the turn at level par.
But it was over the back nine where the 27 year old really began his round, picking up five gains to reach seven under par overall – where he is joined by Spain’s Pep Angles and overnight leader Paul Howard.
“The holes were much shorter today, especially on the back nine, and I feel like I took full advantage of that,” said Joannes who has a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Lamar University in Texas.
“Yesterday I made a shaky start with a bogey on one after hitting it in the bunker on the right side and then missing a short putt.
“I then made pars at four, five and six and I hit my first shot on seven but that’s where we got interrupted and I came back to finish it today.
“This morning at seven o’clock I started alright – I was close for birdie on seven then missed it. And then on nine I had a gimme for birdie which was my first of the day.
“I chipped in on 11 for birdie and then through 12 and 13 I hit it close and made more birdies – and I could have had another at 14.
“The course was not as long today so if you felt confident you could go for a lot of holes and leave yourself easy wedges in.
“Overall the greens were much better this morning, I am just hoping the course dries out and we will see how it goes this afternoon.”
Also finishing his round this morning was 23 year old Angles, who carded five birdies, four bogeys and an eagle to sign for a three under par 68 which took him to seven under par at the competition’s halfway stage.
Alongside both players is Wigan-based Howard, who took the clubhouse lead last night after a four under par 67.

“I have missed the last five cuts so it is just a relief to get through to the weekend,” said the 25 year old. “It would obviously be great if I could go on and get a victory but I am very happy that I will be able to keep on playing.

“I just kept the ball in play and managed to get it round the course really nicely. I managed to keep out of the long rough here and hit it really well from tee to green.
“I putted okay, I didn’t hole as many as I could have, but I was very happy with the way I played overall.”
Ireland’s Ruaidhri McGee is one of five players who sit one shot back from the three leaders, while four Swiss players made the cut which was set at one  over par.
