Scottish men's open amateur stroke play at Gullane

Scott and Forrest share halfway lead on 135

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Nairn's rising star Sandy Scott and Walker Cup player Grant Forrest (Craigielaw)  share the lead on seven-under-par 135 at the halfway stage  of the Scottish men's open amateur stroke-play championship, sponsored by Carrick Neill,  at Gullane Golf Club, East Lothian.
Scott has had rounds of 69 and 66, Forrest 66 and 69.
First-round leader Forrest, Scottish amateur match-play champion in 2012, birdied the first, seventh, 12th, 13th and 15th and would have retained the lead on is own but for a bogey at the 18th in halves of 34-35.
Grant had earlier bogeys at the fifth and 10th.
Teenager Scott birdied the second, third, sixth, seven and 17th, highlighting his card with an eagle 3 at the par-5 12th in halves of 32 and 34. He dropped shots at the short fourth,10th and 15th.
The two Scots are one shot ahead of Travis Smyth (70-66 for 136), one of an army of Australians who are playing in all the big amateur tournaments in Scotland, England and Wales over the next few weeks.
Backing up Forrest and Scott in the top 20 are James Wilson (Balmore) in joint 4th place on 137 (71-66) and last year's Scottish amateur champion, left-hander Robert MacIntyre (Glencruitten), tied 13th on 139 (69-70).
Another past Scottish title-holder, Barry Hume (Haggs Castle), winner of the Welsh open amateur stroke-play title at Harlech last weekend, is tied 23rd on 141 with steady rounds of 71 and 70.
