SCOTTISH SENIOR MATCH-PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP AT SOUTHERNESS
HALCROW ENDS BROOK'S HOPES OF
SENIOR TITLE DOUBLE
The hopes of Barry Brooks (Meldrum House) that he might complete a Scottish seniors' title double this week in the match-play championship following his recent victory in the stroke-play tournament were ended by Colin Halcrow (Windyhill) in the first round at Southerness Golf Club on the Solway Firth.
In terrible conditions of strong winds and torrential rain, Halcrow birdied the 18th to square the match against Brooks, winner of the Aberdeen Links championship in his younger days.
Then Halcrow prevailed at the 20th.
Tony Clark (Dumfries and County) beat former match-play champion David Gardner (Broomieknowe) by two holes.
Top seed Lindsay Blair (Grangemouth) won his opening tie on the 18th green against the last of the 32 qualifiers, Albert Smith (Turriff).
Two of the biggest winners of the day, Ian Gillan (Bishopbriggs) and Ken Thomson (Bramhall) will meet in the second round tomorrow morning.
Defending champion Jim Watt (Edzell) retired early in the inward half of his tie against Stewart Miller (Cochrane Castle). The awful weather may have had something to do with it! Miller was in the lead at the time.
George Rodaks (Pitreavie) also retired, conceding the match to his opponent, James Johnson (Northumberland) after the battery on his caddie car gave up the ghost after four or five holes.
