President Barack Obama has played golf with Tiger Woods for the first time, the White House has confirmed.
The US President, an avid golfer, and Woods, the 14-time major winner, who won his 75th US PGA Tour title last month, teed off at the Floridian Yacht and Golf Club.
Mr Obama wore shorts, something that Woods would not be permitted to have on in a US PGA Tourevent.
The President is on a three-day golf getaway in Florida, while his wife, Michelle, and their daughters, Malia and Sasha, are ski-ing in Colorado. He got some instructional tips on Saturday from Woods' former swing coach, Butch Harmon.
Josh Earnest, a White House spokesman, said Mr Obama and Woods were joined on the course by US Trade Representative Ron Kirk and Jim Crane, the resort owner who also owns the Houston Astros baseball team.
Tim Rosaforte, a Golf Channel analyst and Golf Digest writer, broke the news, tweeting that Woods holed out from a greenside  bunker on the first hole.
"Historic day in golf. Their first round," Rosaforte said.
The White House did not permit the media pool onto the grounds of the resort in order to record any part of the Woods-Obama round.
Woods, who usually steers clear of politics, is ranked number two in the world after Rory McIlroy and lives about an hour south of the Floridian club in Jupiter, Florida.
Woods has not won a major since the sex scandal that set back his career and ended his marriage and, combined with injuries, added up to a fallow period for his once untouchable game.
Mr Obama was asked about the scandal in 2010 and said: "I think that Tiger has acknowledged that he betrayed his family and that's a personal issue that he has got to work out.
"I'm sure he is going to still be a terrific golfer," he said.
Mr Obama normally plays at Andrews Air Force Base during the summer months in Washington, and rarely plays at private clubs, unless he is on holiday in Hawaii or at Martha's Vineyard, a resort island in Massachusetts.
There is no indication of what golfing handicap rating he has - if he has one at all.
