LONG-SRRVING GULLANE PRO JIMMY HUME DIES AT 75

FROM THE PGA WEBSITE
Jimmy Hume, for 30 years the head professional at Gullane, East Lothian until his retirement 10 years ago, died suddenly at the age of 75 earlier this month.
No mean performer, he took part in nine Open Championships, his closest brush with fame coming in the 1967 staging at Hoylake where he was a shot off the lead after the first and second rounds (69-72), but slipped to a share of 29th, largely burdened by a closing 80.
He was principal influence on the young Catriona Lambert from North Berwick, who, as Catriona Matthew, became 2009 British Women's Open champion.
Jimmy's PGA career began at Gullane under the late Hugh Watt, and spells in England (at Beaconsfield, Harewood Downs, Formby and Royal Jersey) were followed by his return to Gullane as head pro.
And after his retirement, as an honorary PGA member, he liked nothing better than enjoying the fine Gullane links. When he wasn't hitting a ball he was walking his two dogs over the splendid East Lothian turf.
PGA chief executive Sandy Jones paid this tribute: "I first met Jimmy at the Open at Muirfield in 1980 when he and David Huish ran the merchandise unit.
"In 1981 we launched the Autumn Classic. He was a generous man and would always ask 'anything you need, son?' and whatever you asked him for, he would never say no and always get what it was you wanted, whatever it was.
"Jimmy was small in stature but big in heart and was always looking out for his fellow pros and will be much missed."
Jimmy is survived by his wife Susan and son Andrew, who himself was a PGA professional for a spell. The funeral was held at Mortonhall Crematorium, Edinburgh.
