Hugh Hunter's Clackmannan County News

Lawrence Allan Clackmannan's best of the week

Best result of last week by a Clackmannan County golfer had to be Alva’s Lawrence Allan in a local qualifying competition for the Paul Lawrie Junior Jug. Over the par 68 Kingsfield Golf Course near Linlithgow, Lawrence carded a one under par 67 to lead the qualifiers for the final of the competition to be held over the Newmachar course on the October 2.
In the British boys championship being held this week at Kilmarnock Barassie, it is good to see Dollar’s Gary Chalmers coming into the field as a late replacement and joining the other two local boys, Alva’s Lawrence Allan and Alloa’s John Salmond. This surely is a record entry for Clackmannanshire boys in the top boys’ event in the world.
In the Scottish Golf Union Order of Merit events, Dollar’s Scott Borrowman, with a much improved performance, finished in 17th place with a level par aggregate of 284 (73,69,69,73) still considerably behind the winner Scott Larkin from Banchory on 269.
Darren Hulston , also Dollar failed to make the 36 hole cut in the same event. Scott Borrowman and Scott Moffat are in the starting list this weekend for the 72 hole North-east District Open Championship held at Cruden Bay.
On the senior front it was Tulliallan’s Phil Dempsey who shared the runners up spot at the South of Scotland Seniors Championship held over the Dumfries and County Golf course. His aggregate of 140 (69,71) was just one shot behind the winner.
Finally in the latest Amateur Golf World rankings, Scott Borrowman is at 1140, Lawrence Allan at 2866 and Jamie Aitken at 3462. It all sounds a bit better when these are changed to Scottish rankings only - Scott is at 45, Lawrence at 88 and Jamie at 98, making three Clackmannanshire golfers in the top 100 in Scotland.
