JOHNSTONE, BRAND SHARE LEAD
IN JERSEY SENIORS CLASSIC

From Steve Todd, Seniors Tour Press Officer
Tony Johnstone produced his “best putting performance in five years” to take a share of the lead with Gordon J. Brand on three under par 69 in the first round of the Jersey Seniors Classic.
Johnstone’s famed short game helped him tame the breezy conditions at La Moye Golf Club as he carded a round of 69, which was later matched by Brand. The 52 year old from Zimbabwe, who finished tied 19th in his first event of the season at the Parkridge Polish Seniors Open last week, dropped a shot on the 17th hole but holed a birdie putt on the last to end his round on a high.
Johnstone said: “The conditions were tough today with the wind so I had to putt well and that was the best I have putted for five years.
“Last week in Poland I played really well but putted badly. I had a season of that last year so I spent the week working on it back in Sunningdale and it seems to be paying off. I’ve waited a while to putt like that.
“I haven’t played on this course since the 1980s and it’s now a fantastic golf course. I love links courses and we’ve got three in a row now. It suits my game and it’s what golf was made for.”
Brand, who finished tied ninth at the Parkridge Polish Seniors Championship last week, had held the outright lead after a birdie on the 16th but followed it by dropping a shot on the 17th to go into the clubhouse tied with Johnstone.
The Englishman, who finished runner up at the 1986 Open Championship at Turnberry, is looking to improve on last year’s third place in the Jersey Seniors Classic.
He said: “The course was playing long today because of the wind. It was different out there to previous years. I drove well today and you have to hit the fairway on this course because the rough is so long.
"That’s what is not helping us on the course. I’m pleased to be in a share for the lead as the morning groups seem to have the better of the conditions.”
The pair lead Ireland’s Denis O’Sullivan by one stroke, while Englishman Peter Mitchell is four shots off the pace after finishing on one over par in his debut on the European Seniors Tour.
He admitted it was nice to be back on the golf course after completing his first competitive round since 2003.
“It was nice to be out there again,” said Mitchell. “It was tricky with the wind but I’m happy with the start I’ve made.”
Sam Torrance, who has been struggling with a long term wrist injury, withdrew from the tournament when the problem flared up again as he finished 11 over par after 18 holes.

Joint leaders in St Andrews Links Trophy

WALLACE AND
CALLUM SHARE
LEAD ON GOOD
DAY FOR SCOTS
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Top-ranked Scots Wallace Booth and Callum Macaulay underlined their
international class to edge ahead of a quality field at the end of the
first round of the 72-hole St Andrews Trophy international amateur
stroke-play championship today.
Both shot six-under-par 66 in near-perfect windless conditions over the
Jubilee Course to set themselves up for the last three rounds over the
Old Course on Saturday and Sunday.
Comrie's Booth, 22, and 24-year-old Macaulay from Tulliallan are two of
the three Scots in the Great Britain & Ireland squad for the St Andrews
Trophy match on August 29 and 30 against the Continent of Europe at
Kingsbarns where the squad will have a get-together on Monday and
Tuesday.
The third, 23-year-old Keir McNicoll (Carnoustie), another who
sharpened up his game with four years on the US college circuit, is
tucked in behind his GB&I colleagues, sharing third place with four
others on 67 on what was a very good day for Scotland.

Also on five-under 67, thanks to an inward half of 33, is late finisher
Allyn Dick (Shotts), Scottish mid-amateur title-winner in 2005 and 2006.
Scottish youths champion Scott Borrowman (Dollar), Mark Hillson
(Craigielaw) and Scottish boys champion Michael Stewart (Troon
Welbeck) are all on the 68 mark. Late in the day, when conditions were
not quite so easy, Stewart, like Dick, came home in 33 for his
four-under-par score.
Later still, in the last three to finish at 7.45pm was James White
(Lundin) on 69.
In fact, there should be no shortage of Scots when the field for
Sunday's final 36 holes is cut to the leading 40 and ties.
On 70 are James Byrne (Banchory), who has just flown back from the
United States NCAA Division 1 championship, Ross Kellett (Colville
Park), Mark Halliday (Royal Aberdeen), reigning Scottish match-play
kingpin John Gallagher (Swanston New) and Kevin McAlpine (Alyth).
Not many players have a current Curtis Cup player as a caddie but
Wallace Booth is an exception – he had his 15-year-old sister Carly
Booth carrying his bag.
"I had to drag her out of bed to get here. She was very tired by the
last day of the Curtis Cup but I thought she was feeling well enough to
help me out and needed the fresh air," said Wallace who has carried on
where he left off on Sunday as winner of the Scottish open amateur
stroke-play championship at The Duke's Course, also in the St Andrews
area.
Both Wallace and Callum highlighted their excellent scorecards with
eagle 3s at the sixth, both using a driver and a five-iron to cover the
498yd. Wallace holed from 10ft whle Callum sank a 25-footer from the
back ege of the green for his 3.
" "This is the first time I've made a good start in the St Andrews
Trophy so I'm looking forward to the weekend," said Booth.
Another link between Booth (a graduate of Augusta State University),
Macaulay (Mississippi University) and McNicoll (Lynn University,
Florida) is that they intend entering the European Tour School
qualifying process as amateurs later this year – and "seeing what
happens." A place in next year's GB&I Walker Cup team in the United
States would be a nice "consolation."
"Putting was my strong point today," said Macaulay who was the Scottish
Golf Union Player of the Year in 2007.

Booth and Macaulay knocked Carnoustie's Keir McNicoll and his 67 off
the clubhouse leaderboard.
"That's the best condition I've ever seen the Jubilee Course," said
23-year-old McNicoll. "The greens are fantastic and the fairways are
running so it was set up for some low scoring."
McNicoll has had a patchy start to the domestic season. Physically if
not mentally recovered from a right wrist injury received on the first
morning of last year's home internationals, Keir finished runner-up in
the Irish open amateur stroke-play but missed the first-round cut in
two weather-hit tournaments, the Brabazon Trophy and the Scottish open
amateur stroke-play at The Duke's Course, last weekend.
"I feel like I've had a stop-start-stop to the season," he said.
Not everybody found the Jubilee Course to their liking.
Scott Henry (Cardross), winner of the Edward Trophy at Glasgow Gailes
this season, returned a 12-over-par 84, including an 8 at a par-3 hole
on his way to a nightmare outward half of 45, while Welsh Walker Cup
player Nigel Edwards (Whitchurch) struggled to an 82.

Welshman Jermine wins English
Seniors title at Wildernesse

John Jermine became the first Welshman to win the English Men’s Seniors Amateur Championship by firing a closing 74 at Wildernesse Golf Club in Kent today.
The 63 year old scratch man from Sunningdale finished on 220, six over par, one stroke ahead of Scot Donald McCart and two clear of three Englishmen, Chris Reynolds, former winner Doug Arnold, and defending champion David Lane.
“I can’t believe it,” said Jermine. “This is a complete surprise. It makes golf worth playing and I’m more excited that when I was a boy.”
Jermine went into the final round sharing the lead with Arnold and Rod Crisp just a shot ahead of three others including Lane. But while most his rivals were shedding shots as the rain returned to this picturesque part of Kent, the Welshman was playing par golf and edging into a slight lead.
He was two clear playing the short 15th but that’s where his game began to unravel. Three bogeys in as many holes threatened his chances but he stayed on top of the leader board because everyone else was feeling the pressure.
Playing the par-5 18th, Jermine was sharing the lead with local hope Peter Hedges, playing ahead, on seven over par and a playoff looked likely. But former Walker Cup man Hedges, who knows every inch of his home club course, inexplicably took 7 down the last. After his approach to the 489-yard hole finished in sand, he failed to get the ball out at the first attempt and his fourth shot flew over the green. From there he took three more strokes for a second successive 76 and 223 and sixth place.
However, all was not over as Jermine cut his drive at 18 deep into the trees but found his ball in the clear from where he chipped out then fired a seven-iron to a foot and holed for a winning birdie.
“I got lucky on the last and managed to finish with a great four,” said Jermine. “It was a chance in a hundred that the ball got through the trees but I recalled Paul Ashwell, the England coach saying to me: ‘only play a shot that you think you can play twice’.
“In the past I would have lost my head and tried to blast it. But I just hacked it out and fired the seven iron 152 yards to a foot. I thought I had lost my chance three holes earlier at the short 15th. I hit the seven iron there but I was out by two clubs. I then three-putted and the steam was coming out of my ears. But it all came right in the end.”
McCart, a Scottish seniors international, returned a closing 71, the only sub-par round of the tournament, to finish second on 221, while Reynolds finished bogey-birdie-bogey-birdie for 75 and 222.
Arnold, three times a winner of the title, was always in contention but he was fighting back pain and he did well to finish with 76, while Lane had two bogeys at the 15th and 17th to see his hopes of a fourth title disappear.
However, Reynolds won the Category A age group (55-59), Arnold the Category B (60-64) and Lane Category C (65-69). Category D for those aged 70 or more went to another former champion, Brian Berney on 234.

High flyer McArthur takes clear

lead in Challenge Tour event

From Steve Todd, ChallengeTour Press Officer
An eagle on his opening hole was the catalyst for Andrew McArthur’s seven under par round of 65 which gave the Scot the lead at the halfway mark in the second round of the Reale Challenge de España.
McArthur, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, hit a seven-iron second shot to within two feet of the pin and then holed his putt, before picking up two more shots in the next three holes for a superb start to his round.
The 29 year old former Scottish amateur champion, who is chasing his third consecutive top 10 finish on the European Challenge Tour, moved to 10 under par at the halfway mark at the Casino Club de Golf Retamares, Madrid, four shots clear of Italian Gregory Molteni, England’s Gareth Davies and fellow Scot Jamie McLeary.
McArthur’s putting was the key to his fine round, dropping only one shot today when he three-putted the fourth hole.
He said: “It was a good round. I holed lots of putts but I did not play fantastic today. The thing is that it seems to be easy when practising but when it comes to the tournament, it is a very hard work for me. It takes a lot of concentration.
“The key today was definitely the putter. I hit the driver well today but every shot was tough.
“About three or four weeks ago I started working with my coach, Ian Rae, the Scottish Golf Union national coach, on my set-up. My body and the club face weren’t correctly aligned so I am working especially on that.”
Wil Besseling carded a four under par round of 68 to move to six under par for the tournament as he chases his second win of 2008 following victory in the II Club Colombia Masters.

Banchory's Adam Lindsay honoured with Midwest
Collegiate Conference team nomination

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY IOWA WESLEYAN COLLEGE
DES MOINES – Iowa Wesleyan College was well represented on the Midwest Collegiate Conference all-conference men’s golf team, which was released today by conference sports information director Molly Brown.
IWC placed a pair of golfers on the conference’s first team, as both Jordan Crampton (Sr.-London, Ontario) and Adam Lindsay (Jr.-Aberdeenshire, Scotland) received all-conference honors. In addition, Tiger Head Coach Ted Peetz was named the conference men’s golf Coach of the Year.
Crampton and Lindsay both tied for the IWC team lead this season with five top-10 finishes each. Lindsay led the team in the fall and for the season was the Tigers’ lowest scorer with an average of 74.8 strokes over 23 rounds. Crampton finished with an average score of 76.3 over 23 rounds.
The two also both finished high in the MCC championship tourney last month, with Lindsay placing second and Crampton tying for third. In addition to the conference award, Crampton was also honored on Thursday as a Daktronics NAIA Scholar Athlete in men’s golf.
“Adam and Jordan are very deserving of this honor,” Peetz said. “They’ve been great leaders and players for our team for a number of years. They embody what it means to be an all-conference player.”
Peetz received the honor as Coach of the Year after the Tigers capped a strong spring by finishing second at the conference meet. IWC placed no lower than third in any of its five spring meets and finished in the top four in 12 of 13 meets for the year.
The Tigers also received votes in several national polls over the season. The three votes the team received in two separate polls, including the most recent Golf World/Nike Golf NAIA poll, were the most received in the program’s history.
“This honor is a reflection of my players,” Peetz said. “This year’s group of guys was the best I’ve coached and made my job easy. I appreciate this honor and am humbled by it.”

ARNOLD, JERMINE AND CRISP SHARE
LEADING IN ENGLISH SENIORS

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH GOLF UNION
Doug Arnold, three times the champion, shares the lead with John Jermine and Rod Crisp with a round left of the English Seniors Championship in Kent.
The Sussex man, who won the title in 2002, ‘03 and ‘06, carded 73 at Knole Park for 146, four over par, a mark equalled by Jermine, also with 73 at Knole Park, and by Crisp with 72 at Wildernesse.
The trio are a shot ahead of three more players, former Walker Cup man Peter Hedges, defending champion David Lane and his England seniors team-mate Chris Reynolds.
Crisp, 65, a member of the BB&O seniors team, admitted he was surprised to be the only man to match par so far at Wildernesse. “This is beyond my expectations,” he said. “I would have settled for 74 or 75 so I’m well pleased.”
Crisp, a three-handicapper from Stoke Mandeville, had only qualified for the final round once before, two years ago at Yelverton in Devon. “Then I got blown away in the wind,” he added.
Welshman Jermine, the 63 year old from Sunningdale, is a canny performer who cannot be discounted, while Arnold has the experience of being a previous winner as well as a seasoned senior international for England.
Hedges is the dark horse of this event. A member at Wildernesse, he navigated his own course in 76 strokes, not one of his best rounds which he fully acknowledged. “I managed to bogey four of the first five holes but covered the rest in level par,” said the former England international.
“I just couldn’t get my swing going today. I know this course like the back of my hand but perhaps that is the problem,” he joked.
“I’ll just have to sharpen up tomorrow.”
Lane, joint leader overnight after a 71 at Knole Park, also returned 76 at Wildernesse and was not happy to have “given it away a bit”.
“I played super to the sixth but then bogeyed three holes in a row,” said Lane. “I played the difficult holes O.K. then messed up the easiest part of the course.”
Kent man Reynolds, runner-up to Lane a year ago, stayed in contention for his first title with 73 at Knole Park to join his England team-mate on 147.
Alongside Lane overnight, Nick ‘Roy’ Rogers found Wildernesse a different kettle of fish and his 78 saw him slip down the field on 149.
Roy Smethurst, four times the champion, improved his chances with 74 at Knole Park for 151. “I played rubbish but managed to cut out the three-putts today which helped,” he said. In a week of high scoring, the cut came at 158 with 62 players qualifying for the final round at Wildernesse. It won’t include Robert Barrell from Braintree despite a hole-in-one at the 160-yard 15th hole in a round of 82.

McLeary, Brovold set pace in
Madrid Challenge Tour event

From Steve Todd, ChallengeTour Press Officer

Norway’s Lars Brovold and Peterhead-born Jamie McLeary both shot seven under par rounds of 65 for a share of the lead in the first round of the Reale Challenge de España.
Brovold carded nine birdies and two bogeys while McLeary, who finished 17th at last week’s Oceânico Group Pro-Am Challenge, dropped just one shot – on the fifth hole- during his round.
The pair are one shot clear of England’s Gary Lockerbie, who shot a flawless six under par round off 66 at the Casino Club de Golf Retamares, Madrid, and Scotland’s Lloyd Saltman whose eventful round included two eagles and a double bogey six at the third hole.
Brovold, who is playing in only his second European Challenge Tour event of the 2008 after missing the cut in the AGF-Allianz Open Côtes d'Armor Bretagne, said he was looking to kick start his season this weekend.
He said: “I hit the ball very straight and kept it in play all the time today. I managed to hit the greens and the key today was my putting and hitting it straight for the first time.
“The season pretty much just started for me. I played in South Africa in the winter, so I’m just starting and I’m playing ok.”
McLeary , whose best finish so far this season was seventh in Bretagne, is hoping to improve on his top 30 finish in Spain last year.
He said: “I hit a lot of iron shots very close, made some good birdies on the par fives. I’ve been playing well lately, I love to play here in Spain. I finished 28th last year.
“I’ve only played three events this year and it’s gone very well so far. I took four months off to practice. I wanted to make sure everything was ready before starting the season. I have been working with my coach at home. I am not a very technical player so we have been working on making it a lot more simple. I’ve come here and played well so it means it is working now.”
Lockerbie is looking for a return to his early season form after missing the cuts in both the DHL Wroclaw Open and the Oceânico Group Pro-Am Challenge.
He said: “I played very solid. It was the best I’ve played for a long time. I really didn’t do anything wrong. I hit fairways, greens and kept it very simple. There was nothing spectacular.
“I’ve played a couple of decent tournaments this season, finishing fourth in Italy, and since then I’ve missed two cuts, so it is nice to be back shooting a good score.”
