Title-holders England edge 5-4 win over Wales at Tenby

on opening day
Scotland gained a fighting draw with Ireland on the opening day of the senior men's home internationals at Tenby Golf Club, Wales.
After the foursomes were shared 1 1/2-1 1/2, wins in the singles by Gordon MacDonald (Callander), skipper Ian Hutcheon (Monifieth), picture right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, and Derek Murphy (Kinross) ensured that the afternoon session would also end with honours even at 3-3 for an overall 4 1/2-4 1/2 scoreline.
Defending champins England came back from trailing 2-1 to Wales after the foursomes to win 5-4. They took the singles 4-2 with wins by Squires, Jessop, Slater and Broster.

Foursomes: H Smyth & J Carroll bt R Stewart & D Murphy 1 hole; A Morrow & M Kelly halved with I C Hutcheon & J A Fraser; L McNamara & N Duke lost to G MacDonald & A K Pirie 2 and 1 (1 1/2-1 1/2).
Singles: Morrow bt Stewart 6 and 5, Kelly lost to MacDonald 4 and 3, Duke lost to Hutcheon 6 and 5, McNamara bt R McLellan 1 hole, M Coote lost to Murphy 1 hole, Smyth bt Fraser 5 and 4 (3-3).

Foursomes: D Arnold & A Squires lost to P Jones & J Jermine 4 and 3; G King & C Reynolds bt M Rooke & G Rees 7 and 6; G Broster & P Slater lost to K Stimson & S Hopkins 3 and 2 (1-2).
Singles: Arnold lost to Jermine 2 and 1, Squires bt Rees 1 hole, Reynolds lost to J Whitcutt 4 and 3, D Jessup bt Rooke 3 and 2, Slater bt Stimosn 3 and 2, Broster bt Jones 2 and 1 (4-2).
