Donald SLICER, the pro with
the famous name, calls it a day

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
A professional with one of the most famous surnames in golf - Donald Slicer - has retired as club pro at Kippie Lodge Sports & Country Club, formerly the Aberdeen Petroleum Club, at Milltimber on the western outskirts of the city.
"Donald had a bad fall in January, resulting in a broken shoulder and although the shoulder was reset and healed well, Donald also suffered nerve damage which meant he has limited use of one hand," said Kippie Lodge club director Robin Caldwell.
"He has been received physiotherapy and making progress but Donald decided to retired as he felt that the recuperation period was too long and that it may be 12 to 18 months before he would have full use of his hand again.
"I would like to wish Donald a long and happy retirement and thank him for his seven years of loyal service to the club."
Slicer, who is 59, has been a member of the PGA since 1965 when he began his training as an assistant pro at Cawder Golf Club. As an amateur he had been runner-up twice in the Scottish assistants championship and third in the British assistants championship and Glasgow youths champion.
After completing his PGA training, Slicer played on the European Tour from 1969 for a few years before becoming club pro at Falkirk Tryst. He won seven pro-ams on the Tartan Tour but had to give up the playing side of the game due to an injury.
Later he set up a retail outlet for men's and women's leisurewear and sold it on as a going concern.
He became a specialist teaching professional and moved to the North-east of Scotland in the 1990s and joined the coaching staff at the Kings Links Golf Centre before moving on to similar posts with Newmachar, the North-east District of the SGU, Peterhead and finally Kippie Lodge.
There is a nine-hole course and a driving range and short-game practice facilities at the Kippie Lodge Sports and Country Club which has 1,300 members.
Slicer's successor as club professional is 23-year-old Craig Stewart who has spent the past six years on the staff of Inchmarlo Golf Centre.
