EUAN MOIR FROM HAMILTON TO THE FORE IN
BRITISH MID-AMATEUR AT ALWOODLEY

FROM THE R&A WEBSITE

Three times British open mid-amateur championship winner John Kemp is back in the hunt for a fourth title after taming the tricky Yorkshire breeze to get round the 6,793 yards Alwoodley, Leeds course in a best of the day level-par 71 to be among the leading qualifiers into the first round of tomorrow's match-play stages on 146.
Winner of the championship in 1999, 2002 and 2003 and beaten finalist in 2000, the 39-year-old packaging salesman from the John O’Gaunt club in Cambridgeshire, chipped in twice on the sixth and 16th and sank a 40ft putt for a birdie 2 at the ninth.
“I played well today, I was a bit more aggressive,” said Kemp, who matched four birdies with four bogeys.
His John O'Gaunt clubmate, 44-year-old Mark Wharton, the overnight leader on 66, added a 72 to lead the qualifiers on 138. "I played well - it was hard work out there and I'm glad to be through," said the six times Bedfordshire champion.
Cambridgeshire landscape gardener Lee Yearn added a second round 74 to his opening 67 for a one under par total of 141 to qualify with plenty to spare. “It was a bit brutal out there but I played well,” said the 36-year-old from the Ely City club.
“I dropped a stroke at the first when my tee shot ended up in a small hole just off the fairway, but I pulled it back at the long third, with a nine-iron second to 30ft and two putts. Then I found traps off the tee at the short seventh and ninth and failed to get up and down to drop two more shots.”
Out in two over par 38, Yearn got his shots back with a birdie at the long 10th and another at the 12th where he sank a 10-foot putt.
“I struggled a bit from there. I dropped a stroke at the 13th when I didn’t reach the fairway off the tee and took a five. I hit a great three iron onto the green at the 206-yard 14th into the wind and sank the putt from 20 feet, but then dropped strokes at three of the last four holes.”
A stroke behind Yearn is 41-year-old Steve Barwick from the Stoke Park club in Buckinghamshire, who also shot 74 to add to his opening 68. Like Yearn he dropped strokes on the way home after reaching the turn in one under 35.
“I had three putts at the 12th, didn’t get up and down from over the green at the 13th, found a bunker off the tee and could only hack out at the 17th and missed from four feet for par at the last,” said Barwick.
“But I’m in the match-play stages and the higher up the better.”
A stroke ahead of Kemp on 145 is another old hand at the Mid-Amateur, 39-year-old Scot Euan Moir from Hamilton and 25-year-old Cheshire country player Andrew Hardie who is playing for the first time.
Professional's son Moir, who won the qualifying at Seaton Carew in 2001 and was third last year at Southport & Ainsdale when he shot 65 in the first round, added a 73 to his opening 72, as did Hardie.
Moir had two birdies and two bogeys on the way out and three bogeys and just one birdie on the way home. His twin brother Michael failed to qualify.
Hardie, who plays out of Astbury near Crewe, opened with a birdie at the first but then dropped strokes at the second, eighth and ninth to be out in 38. He dropped further strokes at the 12th and 15th but then finished with a flourish, with birdies the 16th and 18th.
“I hit a seven-iron to 10 feet at the 16th and a three-wood to eight feet at the last,” he said.
Three experienced players - Roger Roper from Wike Ridge, Graeme Marchbank from Durham City and Nigel Sweet from nearby Moortown are on 147 and the group on 149 includes former Scotland international player Sandy Twynholme from Morpeth, beaten by Gary Wolstenholme in the 1998 Mid-Amateur final at Ganton.
Also on 149 are Americans Jay Blumenfeld from New Jersey, Paul Simson from North Carolina and Brian Harris from Indiana.
Blumenfeld, 51, a regular at the event and a previous quarter-finalist, added a 78 to his opening 71, while 56-year-old Simson, who is playing for the first time, added a 77 to his 72.“It’s a magnificent event and a great venue, said Simson, who won the British Seniors at Saunton in Devon last year and was fifth at Nairn last week.
Harris, 39, who shot 75 to add to his 74, is playing in the event for the sixth time. “I just love the golf over here,” said Harris. “I’ve reached the match-play stages every time and was in the quarter-finals last year.”

FRASER FOTHERINGHAM FROM NAIRN IN
QUARTER-FINALS OF BRITISH BOYS

FROM THE R&A WEBSITE

Spain and England are guaranteed a place in the semi-finals of the Boys Amateur Championship at Royal Porthcawl as the field is whittled down from 256 at the start of the week to the last eight, with one Scot - Fraser Fotheringham from Nairn, one player from Denmark, one Italian and another English international completing the quarter-final line-up.
At the top of the draw Eddie Pepperell will face his England team captain Jack Hiluta tomorrow morning and Spaniards Jordi Garcia Pinto and Emilio Cuartero will battle each other.
Fotheringham will be matched against Nicolai Aagaard from Denmark and a third English international, Gary King, will play Cristiano Terragni of Italy.
Fotheringham made his debut for Scotland in the home internationals last week and knocked out the Scottish Boys champion Paul Ferrier in the fourth round at Royal Porthcawl.
Although he took an early two-hole lead against Chris Lloyd of Kendleshire he went one down when he three-putted the short 14th. The Highlander squared the match when Lloyd missed from short range at the 16th and Fotheringham got up and down for a birdie at the next where Lloyd lipped out for an eagle.
Both hit good drives at the first extra hole, but Lloyd missed the green and Fotheringham hit a wedge to 10 feet for the win.
Hiluta and Johnston, who are close friends and have been foursomes partners for three years, had a classic match-play encounter, Johnston taking a three-hole lead after seven, but Hiluta coming back to only one down at the turn.
The England team captain then holed from 15 feet at the 11th to stay just one down and squared the match with a birdie at the next.
He won the 14th with a par and Johnston lost his ball after a wayward second shot at the 15th and missed from six feet for a chance to save the match at the 17th, losing by 3 and 1.
Hiluta now faces Eddie Pepperell, another close friend and England team-mate with whom he is sharing a room this week. Pepperell was five up and well in command against Jamie Howie after 13 holes, but the Welsh youngster birdied the short 14th and won the next two with pars, but his fight-back came too late and he went down by 2 and 1.
Danish international Nicolai Aagaard was too strong for Ricky Pharo of Hawkstone Park, winning three of the opening five holes and staying comfortably in front for a 4 and 3 victory. He is an enormously powerful player, often using a two-iron from the tee and outdriving opponents hitting drivers.
Jordi Garcia Pinto of Spain was never behind in his match against Paul Fossum of France, extending a one-hole advantage after 12 holes by winning the next two and securing a 4 and 3 win.
Pinto's fellow countryman Emilio Cuartero came back from one down after seven holes to edge out Andrew Palmer of Chorley by one hole.
There was never much between Arnaud-Pierre Malinvaud of France and Cristiano Terragni of Italy, but the Italian won his way into the sixth round by 2 and 1.
In the final match of round five England international Gary King was two up after five holes against Henri Pyykola, an impressive player from Finland, and although he was pulled back to only a one hole advantage at the turn and moved on to a 3 and 2 victory.

FIFTH ROUND RESULTS

Jamie Howie, Royal St Davids
Eddie Pepperell, Drayton Park won 2 and 1.

Andrew Johnston, North Middlesex
Jack Hiluta, Chelmsford won 3 and 1.

Ricky Pharo, Hawkstone Park

GEORGE MURRAY'S FLYING START TO
LEXUS OPEN IN NORWAY

From Michael Gibbons
Challenge Tour Press Officer

Fifer George Murray made a blistering start to the European Challenge Tour’s Lexus Open in Norway with five birdies in his opening six holes helping the former Scottish amateur champion to a share of third place after the first round.
Murray could not keep up the unbelievable scoring of his opening six holes at the Miklagard Golf Club, but he ended the day with a four-under-par 68 to lie just two shots behind leader Michael McGeady of Ireland.
After a slow start to his rookie season on the Challenge Tour, Murray found some much needed form at last week’s Scottish Challenge presented by Bank of Scotland Corporate where he finished 12th at Cardrona.
The Anstruther 24 year old, currently 61st on the tour rankings, is now hoping for a strong finish to the season as he bids to break into the Challenge Tour’s top 45 in order to qualify for the season-ending Apulia San Domenico Grand Final, where those 45 players do battle for the 20 available European Tour cards.
Other Scots in the field did not do so well as George Murray.
Scott Henderson, still trying to come to terms with the theft of large sums of money from his bank account after his cheque book was stolen at Cardrona Hotel, had a 73 with birdies at the third, fifth and seventh.
Eric Ramsay and Murray Urquhart were both on the 73 mark.
Rookie Richie Ramsay had double bogeys at the second and seventh in returning a 74, the3 same score as Elliot Saltman.
David Patrick had a 78.

McArthur and McLeary are the only two Scots in an elite 39 man field at the Golf Club de Genève and posted respective first rounds of level par 72 and three over 75.

SCOTLAND TEAM NAMED FOR MEN'S HOME
INTERNATIONALS AT COUNTY LOUTH

The Scottish Golf Union selectors have chosen the following Scotland team for the men's home internationals at Co Louth from September 19 to 21:

WALLACE BOOTH (Comrie)
JAMES BYRNE (Banchory).
GLENN CAMPBELL (Blairgowrie).
GAVIN DEAR (Murrayshall).
JOHN GALLAGHER (Swanston New).
SCOTT HENRY (Cardross).
JONATHAN KING (Glasgow).
CALLUM MACAULAY (Tulliallan).
KEVIN McALPINE (Alyth).
KEIR McNICOLL (Carnoustie)
PAUL O'HARA (Colville Park).

First reserve: ROSS KELLETT (Colville Park).
Second reserve: SCOTT BORROWMAN (Dollar).

New caps at men's home internationals level are Gavin Dear, James Byrne, Wallace Booth and Callum Macaulay.
Byrne, of course, made his full international debut for Scotland in the European team championship. He flew to the United States this week for the introductory week for freshmen students at Arizona State University.
Booth made his full cap debut for Scotland against France in 2003 but has never appeared in the men's home internationals. Victories in two SGU Order of Merit events this summer - the Tennant Cup and the Cameron Corbett Vase - ensured his selection this year.
Macaulay's good run in the British amateur championship, coupled with good performances in Order of Merit events - he won the West of Scotland Open last year - always had him on the short leet.
The decision by Lloyd Saltman (Craigielaw) to turn professional immediately after the Walker Cup made another space available in the Scotland team for Co Louth. Richie Ramsay is another who would have been in the Scots line-up but for turning pro several weeks ago.
One man who might have expected at least to have been named a reserve is Duncan Stewart (Grantown on Spey). He won the East of Scotland Open at Lundin Links and made the Final Qualifying of the Open.
Scotland have won the Raymond Trophy as home international champions for the past two years. They have not completed a hat-trick of titles since 1934.
George Crawford (Williamwood) is the non-playing captain of the Scotland team.
