SLUMPS TO AN 80 IN POWERADE
ASSISTANTS' CHAMPIONSHIP

Former Scottish boys' match-play champion Lee Harper (Archerfield Links) and Anglo-Scot Ian Campbell (Brighton & Hove) were the leading Scots on two-over-par 74 at the end of the first round of the Powerade PGA assistants golf championship at London Golf Club today.
Harper would have been a couple of shots closer to leader Gary Wardlow from Dunmurry, Northern Ireland but for a double bogey 6 at the 16th. Campbell's highlights were birdies at the fourth, fifth and 12th. Wardlow birdied four in a row from the 12th to lead by two strokes with a 70.
Michael Rae (Alyth) and Craig Matheson (Falkirk Tryst) both ahd double bogey 6s at the 465yd par-4 16th. Rae finished the day on joint 14th place with a 75 - one ahead of Mathieson whose 76 put him alongside Sean O'Donnell (Balbirnie Park) in a share of 19th place.
New Gleneagles Scottish PGA champion Mark Loftus (Cowglen) had his worst round of the season - an eight-over-par 80 which included double bogey 6s at the first, second and 14th.
Also on the 80 mark was Graeme Lornie (Aspire) who had been playing well recently. He had a double bogey 7 at the 12th. Nathan Keast (Duff House Royal), another on the 80 mark, had a double bogey 6 at the 13th.

FERRIER AND FOTHERINGHAM ONLY
TWO SCOTS STILL STANDING AFTER
THREE ROUNDS AT ROYAL PORTHCAWL

Scottish boys' match-play champion Paul Ferrier (Baberton) and Nairn's Fraser Fotheringham are the only two Scots still standing as the British boys' amateur championship goes into the fourth round.
Ferrier ousted Scotland team-mate Sam McLaren (King James VI) by 3 and 2 while Fotheringham won by 3 and 2 against Adams Wills (Sandway).
Michael Main (Thornton) lostt by 3 and 2 to Darren Renwick (Worthing) and after 8pm, Scott Fraser (Royal Aberdeen) went down by one hole to Josh Sims (Caldy).

Following from the R&A Website:

England boys' team captain Jack Hiluta has won his way into the fourth round of the Boys Amateur Championship at Royal Porthcawl where he is joined by several members of the squad he led to success last week in the home internationals.
But his success was at the expense of fellow Englishman Garrick Porteous. Hiluta always had the edge, but was taken to the demanding last hole which he birdied to close out the match by one hole.
Fellow international Andrew Johnston, who played with Hiluta in last year's home internationals, was also a winner by 2 and 1 over Billy Fowles of Wentworth. There were never more than two holes between them, but Johnston was always able to stay in front.
Other members of the England squad to go through to the fourth round include Eddie Pepperell, a 7 and 5 winner over Richard Bentham of Celtic Manor, and Tommy Fleetwood who beat Pedro Figueiredo of Portugal by 3 and 1.
Pepperell had to go four extra holes to defeat England team-mate Oscar Sharpe yesterday but said he felt much less pressure today.
Hiluta now plays Matthew Phythian, the biggest surprise of the championship so far. As a three handicap player he was 35th reserve for the event, but was waiting for his chance by the clubhouse when called to the first tee at 15 minutes notice.
Yesterday he beat much fancied Andrea Pavan of Italy by one hole and today added another Italian scalp to his belt with a 3 and 2 victory over Alberto Zani.
Phythian, a 17-year-old student at Gloucester College, has been coached recently by Royal Porthcawl club professional Peter Evans. "He has given me a lot of confidence, but I never expected to be in the fourth round," he said.
Jamie Howie of Royal St Davids, the first man out in every round since he got proceedings under way at 6.30am on Monday, had a 2 and 1 win over Daniel Bishop and will now play Damien Perrier of France, who put out defending champion Matthew Nixon in the first round and who hit 12 fairways in the 16 holes of his 4 and 2 victory against Jonathan Corke.
Paul Ferrier, the Scottish boys' match-play champion from the Baberton club, had a 3 and 2 win over fellow Scotland team member Sam McLaren (King James VI). He lost the opening hole, but won the fourth, fifth and sixth and was never behind from that point on.
"It was a bit difficult to concentrate and hard to believe we were playing in the British championship rather than playing a practice round together," he said.

Grieve and Morrison topped the field of 108 with two-under-par 71s. Brian had an excellent outward half of 33, the best of the day, but came back in 38.
Gordon MacDonald (Callander was in a big group in joint fourth place on 74. Gordon had halves of 37.
Stephen Ellis (Cowal) shared 11th place with a first round 75 (39-36) while Royal Aberdeen's John Johnston and Ian Hutcheon (Monifieth) both had 76s to be in the joint 19th bracket.
John had birdfies at the first, second, ninth and 12th but tired over the last few holes and bogeyed the 15th, 16th and 18th for 40 home.
It was much the same story for Hutcheon who had said at Nairn last week that he felt tired BEFORE he went to Slovenia. Ian birdied the second and eighth but had a double bogey at the 11th and further shots dropped at the 14th and 18th in 41 for the second nine.
Donald McCart (Castlerock) was the Scot who least enjoyed his day's golf. He finished joint 96th with an 87 (45-42) which included triple bogey 7s at the fourth and the 15th.
Scotland are the defending champions but with no first-round team totals being issued by the organisers, it was difficult to calculate the Scots' position. On the face of it, with Grieve and MacDonald in the top four, one would have to assume that the Scots are sitting pretty, close to England.

DEARDEN WINS WEST WALES
CLASSIC IN AWFUL WEATHER
AT ASHBURNHAM

Vale of Glamorgan professional Matthew Dearden won the West Wales Classic in appalling conditions at Ashburnham Golf Club on Tuesday.
This was the fifth event of this season’s Dragon Tour, Wales’ first professional golf tour, and now rebranded as the Celtic Pro Tour and including events in Scotland and Ireland.
Dearden was in second place overnight after former Gower amateur, Lee Lewis, who turned professional last week, started his new career among the paid ranks with a round of two under par 70 to lead by one shot from Dearden who shot a one under par round of 71.
At one stage in round one, Dearden stood at four under par after 12 holes, only to drop three shots in the last six holes. In joint third place, also dropping shots on the last six holes of day one, was Matthew Prior (Machynys Peninsula) who was leading the field at four under par with Dearden after 12, but finished at level par 72.
Three other players sat alongside Prior at level par - Matthew Griffiths (Caerphilly), who won the Carmarthen Bay open at Machynys Peninsula last month, Asian Tour player Craig Smith (St Mellons), who won the last Celtic Pro Tour event in Wales at Garnant Park, and amateur Pete James (Belmont Lodge).
One of the stories of the first day was that of the only lady golfer in the field, Lauren Diggle (Celtic Manor).
Standing at four over par after 12 holes, while the men struggled on the last six holes, she gained two shots to finish at two over par after day one for a share of eighth place overnight, within striking distance of her first pay cheque on the Celtic Pro Tour.
Day two was a completely different affair, with the forecast heavy rain arriving overnight on Monday and continuing into the morning, meaning that a one hour suspension was required before play could start in round two in squally conditions.
Going out in the final grouping with Dearden and amateur Pete James (Belmont Lodge), Lewis found the going tough and drifted out of contention after 12 holes with the wind picking up. Diggle also struggled to cope with the conditions, but can be proud of her effort from the back tees, in finishing in tied 11th place in the professional event.
After 15 holes, Dearden had picked up further shots to go four strokes clear at -3, with Griffiths next at +1. After a shaky final few holes, dropping two shots in the process, Dearden held his nerve to win the event by two shots from Griffiths, with the only under par aggregate score of -1, collecting £1,000 a Sunderland of Scotland waterproof suit and a Powerbug electric trolley.
Griffiths’s second place finish (+1), winning £500, catapults him into second place in the Celtic Pro Tour Order of Merit, after seven events, and looks in great form, having finished as winner, runner up and runner up in each of his last three outings on the tour.
New Order of Merit leader is David Price (Aber Wrought Iron / http://www.vale-hotel.com/) whose third place finish at Ashburnham on +2, after two rounds of 73, won him £250.
Sharing joint 4th place were Prior and James Lee (Caerphilly) on +3, each picking up £125, while the leading amateur vouchers went to Pete James (Belmont Lodge) and James Frazer (Pennard) who finished on +5.
The next Celtic Pro Tour event is the Swansea Bay Open at Clyne Golf Club, next Wednesday and Thursday, August 22 and 23

SEVEN NEW CAPS IN ENGLAND TEAM FOR
HOME INTERNATIONALS AT CO LOUTH

Daniel Willett, newly crowned English champion from Rotherham Golf Club, is one of seven new caps in the England squad for the Home Internationals at County Louth Golf Club, Ireland from September 19 to 21.
The other newcomers are Matthew Baldwin (Royal Birkdale), Ben Evans (Rye), Charlie Ford (Kirby Muxloe), Sam Hutsby (Liphook), Dale Whitnell (Five Lakes) and Chris Wood (Long Ashton).
Also in the team are Gary Boyd (Cherwell Edge), Matthew Cryer (Coventry), Ben Parker (Royal Birkdale) and Gary Wolstenholme (Kilworth Springs).
Willett, 19, who has also been selected for the Walker Cup, won the English championship earlier this month by beating Cryer 3 and 2 in the 36-hole final at Royal St George’s in Kent.
He is the in-form player, having followed up two wins at college in the United States with the Yorkshire championship, a ten-shot win in the South of England Championship at Walton Heath and the English crown.
Willett attends college at Jacksonville State University, Alabama.
Baldwin, 21, earns his cap after seven years on the England scene at under 16 and boys levels. A former winner of the McGregor Trophy, he was England Boy Captain in 2004 and third in the Carris Trophy that year.
Last year, he won the Formby Hare, finished third in the Scottish Open Stroke Play and the Danish Open Amateur and in 2007 reached the semi-finals of the Portuguese Amateur before winning the Lancashire Championship.
Evans, 20, is another with a long pedigree with England dating back to 2001. Also capped at under 16 and boys levels, he won the Sunningdale Foursomes with Danielle Masters last year and he finished third in the Riverswood Junior Open in Holland and in the South of England Stroke Play.
This year, the Rye golfer reached the quarter finals of the Spanish Amateur, was runner-up in the recent South of England Stroke Play, and has had top-ten finishes in the Berkhamsted and Berkshire Trophies and in the Welsh Open Stroke Play.
Ford is another US college student, attending the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He had three top-ten finishes in the past collegiate season and was ranked 42nd in the US. He was also named in the Division One all-Region team for the South East US by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
At home this year, the Leicestershire 22 year old topped the individual rankings in the Midland qualifier at Coventry, finished third in the Midland Open Amateur at Northampton, finished fourth in the Tillman Trophy and seventh in the St Andrews Links Trophy.
Hutsby, 18, last year’s England Boy Captain, has also been capped at under 16 and boys levels. A year ago the Hampshire youngster pulled off a sensational victory in the Spanish Amateur, beating the then US Amateur Champion Edoardo Molinari. In 2006 he also won the Duke of York Young Champions tournament at Dundonald Links and was third in the Daily Telegraph Junior Championship.
This year he has won the George Henriques Trophy for the best score by a GB&I player aged under 20 when he finished joint fourth in the Brabazon Trophy and recently won the St Mellion International and the Stoneham Trophy.
Whitnell, 19, has blossomed over the past two years. Highly successful in Essex with victory in the Under 16 Championship in 2004 and a double of the county title and boys championship last year, he finished second in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters in 2006 after which he was capped for the European Boys Team Championships and Boys Home Internationals.
Third in the Carris Trophy last year, he won the Daily Telegraph Junior Championship in Dubai and this year has a string of high finishes including victory in the North of England Youths, runner-up in the French Open Stroke Play and the Tillman Trophy and third in the Russian Amateur.
Wood, 19, has also shone over the last two years. Victories in his native Gloucestershire and in the South West at junior level have been followed by the Gloucestershire Championship last year and a runner-up spot in 2007.
Further afield, Wood finished fifth in the South of England Stroke Play last year and was a quarter-finalist in the Italian Amateur. In 2007 he has already won the West of England Stroke Play and the Russian Amateur, finished runner-up in the South West Championship and the Tillman Trophy and reached the quarter finals of the Amateur Championship.
Boyd, 20, winner of the inaugural Asia-Pacific Open Amateur in China last December, made his full England debut in last year’s Home Internationals in Wales as did 20 year old Parker, winner of the German Amateur last weekend.
Cryer, 32, earned his first full cap in the 2005 Home Internationals, while Wolstenholme, who will be 47 on August 21, has been selected for every Home Internationals since 1988.
Regular caps David Horsey, Jamie Moul, and John Parry were not considered as they are playing in the Walker Cup and attending the European Tour Qualifying School, while Paul Waring has turned professional.
Scotland are the defending champions while England last won the Home Internationals at Prestwick in 2004.

The full England team is:

Matthew Baldwin (Royal Birkdale).
