LLOYD SALTMAN NOW ONLY
SCOT IN R&A’S TOP 50
WORLD RANKINGS

Richie Ramsay’s sudden decision to turn professional has left Scotland with only one player in the top 50 of the R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings.
Lloyd Saltman (pictured right) is No 3 in this week’s updated list. The Craigielaw man is the only non-American in the top six.
To find the next Scot you have to go down to 51st place for Callum Macaulay of Tulliallan.
James Byrne from Banchory, winner of the Scottish Under-18 boys’ stroke-play title last week, is third-best Scot in 57th place, followed by Wallace Booth (Comrie) at No 72 and Scottish double champion Kevin McAlpine (Alyth).

FORMER CHAMPION GLENN
CAMPBELL FALLS TO PAUL
O'HARA IN ROUND 2

Scottish boys' stroke-play champion James Byrne (Banchory) is still the only seed to have been knocked out - on the opening day - as Day 2 of the Allied Surveyors Scottish men's amateur championship draws to a close at Prestwick today.
There are second-round ties still being played so there is still time for that statement to be changed.
Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan), the No 7 seed, did have a close shave in that he was taken to the 20th before beating Steven Wallace (Prestwick St Cuthbert) who used his local knowledge - and over this course, local knowledge is worth a hole or two of a start - to bridge the gap in ability, if there was indeed any such thing.
Match-play is a great leveller and Wallace started confidently to be two holes up after three.
Maculay, British amateur championship quarter-finalist, settled to cut back the deficit and turn for home with a two-hole lead. But Wallace was not going to be easily shaken off and both birdied the 18th to keep the match all square. Macaulay got through at the second extra hole.
Double Scottish champion Kevin McAlpine (Alyth) was one down after nine to David Addison (Kilmarnock Barassie) but had taken the lead by the 14th and finished his man off with birdies at the 15th and 16th for a 3 and 2 victory.
Scottish youths champion Scott Borrowman (Dollar) won at the 19th against Colin Peddie (Hayston). Borrowman had to hole a big putt across the last green to stay alive.
In the second round ties, top seed Lloyd Saltman (Craigielaw) had another comfortable win, beating Steven Rennie (Airdrie) by 4 and 3.
Paul O'Hara (Colville Park), pictured above, twice a finalist in the last three years, beat the champion of two years ago at Southerness, Murrayshall greenkeeper Glenn Campbell (Blairgowrie). O'Hara won by 4 and 3.

NEW FACES IN SCOTLAND TEAM
AS THEY BID TO RETAIN BOYS'
HOME INTERNATIONALS TITLE

Scotland will bid to win the boys' home golf internationals title at the Machynys Peninsula, Wales from August 7 to 9 with only two of the players who were part of the successful squad (pictured right) at Moray Golf Club, Lossiemouth 12 months ago. It was the first time the Under-18 Scots had topped the all-play-all table against England, Ireland and Wales since 1995.
They are James Byrne (Banchory), the new Scottish boys' stroke-play champion, and Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) who lost out to James, his golfing buddy, at the third hole of a play-off for the title at Cardrona last week.
Byrne flies to American a few days after the internationals to enrol at Arizona State University on a four-year golf scholarship. Because of this he will miss the British boys' open amateur championship at Royal Porthcawl, South Wales.
The North and North-east is well represented with the selection of Fraser Fotheringham (Nairn), Scott Fraser (Royal Aberdeen and Chris Gaittens (Fortrose & Rosemarkie).
Scottish boys' match-play champion Paul Ferrier (Baberton) and Scottish schoolboys' title-winner Neil Henderson (Glen) are in the 11-strong line-up.
Team is:
James Byrne (Banchory), Andrew Campbell (Dumbarton), Paul Ferrier (Baberton), Fraser Fotheringham (Nairn), Scott Fraser (Royal Aberdeen), Chris Gaittens (Fortrose & Rosemarkie), Neil Henderson (Glen), Sam McLaren (King James VI), Paul Shields (Kirkhill), Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck), Andrew Wallace (Glenbervie).

WOLSTENHOLME'S BACK
RULES HIM OUT OF BID
FOR FIRST ENGLISH
AMATEUR TITLE

Gary Wolstenholme is out of this week's English men's amateur championship in Kent without striking a ball.
The Walker Cup veteran - who will have his 47th birthday next month - scratched with a back injury. Gary, although he has won most things, including the British amateur champion in 1991 and 2003, had never won the English title. He has been a beaten finalist.
Wolstenholme, pictured right, is ranked No 17 in the R&A WAGR. The only English players ahead of him are John Parry (No 10), David Horsey (No 13) and Gary Boyd (No 14).
For the first time, the English amateur championship has two stroke-play qualifying rounds - one at Royal St George's, Sandwich and the other at Royal Cinque Ports, Deal to narrow down a record entry of 288 to 64 and ties for the first round of the match-play at Royal St George's.
In yesterday's first qualifying round, 20-year-old Shane Winstone from Bristol lowered the Royal Cinque Ports course record to eight-under-par 64.
John Parry (Harrogate) had a hole in one at the seventh on his way to a round of 70. Paul Waring, the 2005 champion, could have done with an ace or two ... an 82 puts the pressure on him in today's second qualifying round.
At the par-70 Royal St George's venue, David Horsey (Styal) was the leader with a 68.
Conversely, 2005 champion Paul Waring, which leaves him under pressure to qualify.

LEADING FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND SCORES

68 David Horsey (Styal).
69 Nicky Harris (Whitefield).
