PETER WHITEFORD LYING JOINT FOURTH
IN NEW ZEALAND OPEN

European Tour rookie Peter Whiteford from Kirkcaldy is sitting in joint fourth position at the halfway stage of the Michael Hill New Zealand Open at The Hills Golf Club, Queenstown.
The Scot has put together rounds of 70 and 68 for a 36-hole tally of six-under-par 138. He is four shots behind the leader, Australian Steven Bowditch.
Aberdonian Michael Sim fell back with a second-round 76 for 145 and made the cut with nothing to spare. Among those who missed it were Walker Cup player and rookie pro Rhys Davies as well as Michael Campbell, New Zealand's former US Open champion.
Campbell also missed the cut last week in the Aussie Masters. Earlier in the week former Open champion Ian Baker-Finch expressed the view that Campbell was in a similar downward spiral to the one he (Baker-Finch) endured and eventually forced his early retirement from the playing side of the game.
Vieing with leader Steven Bowditch for the "story of the day" was the amazing display by New Zealand left hander and former Open champion, Bob Charles.
The 71-year-old rolled back the years to shoot a 68, making the cut on 143 after a round that featured five birdies and an eagle.
"I didn't want to come here and embarrass myself. The competition does get me fired up and the way the golf course set up helped me considerably," said Bob.
"The old adrenaline starts to flow with the competition and I almost felt 30 years younger today. It's something which I enjoy and get a lot of pride from."
