CRAW'S NEST TASSIE HOLDER KO'd

SCOTT MANN GOES OUT
IN SECOND ROUND
AT CARNOUSTIE

Scott Mann’s bid to win the Craw’s Nest Tassie three years in a row ended on the 18th green of Carnoustie’s championship links today.
The 20-year-old son of former Walker Cup player Lindsay Mann and a member of Carnoustie Caledonia went down by one hole to Jon Greenough (West Lancashire) in a second-round tie
Mann had been the leading qualifier for the second year in succession and with a +4 handicap looked a cut above the rest of the field.
But match-play is a great leveller and even Scott’s vast reservoir of local knowledge of the course could not stave off defeat from the Englishman who was 32nd of the 64 qualifiers for the match-play stages.
Mann, pictured right, had set his sights on a Tassie treble before having a go at the European Tour School qualifying process.
Graham Marshall from Birstall, Leicester, beaten by Mann in last year’s final but a winner of the Craw’s Nest Tassie two years ago, went through to the last 16 with a convincing 7 and 6 win over Andrew Jones (West Lancashire).
Marshall qualified in seventh position, as he did last year.
Such is the popularity of the Carnoustie tournament with English golfers, who come up on a week’s holiday to play the course that will stage next year’s Open championship, that there are only three Scots are still standing – Aaron Sweeney (Carnoustie), who beat David Southern (Hindley Hall) by 6 and 5, David Imrie (Thornton), a 5 and 4 winner over Downfield’s Scott Robertson, and David Downie (Kirriemuir Players), who went to the 20th before taking the measure of Joe Restein (Eastern Shore).
The tournament continues with two rounds on Friday with the semi-finals and final on Saturday.
