JACKSONVILLE JOCKS ARE
OFF AND RUNNING AGAIN
Jacksonville University’s Scottish trio of golfers – Duncan Stewart (Grantown on Spey), Russell Knox (Inverness) and Jamie Kennedy (Edinburgh) – have started the new American college golf season the way they finished the last one.
Jacksonville won the team title in the Sanctuary Cove Preview 36-hole tournament at Sanctuary Cove, Waverly in Georgia by 14 shots and Duncan Stewart, pictured right, claimed the individual honours.
Stewart set a record, seven-birdie 66 (34-32) for the 7,003yd, par-71 course in the first round and followed it up with a 70 for a three-shot victory with a total of six-under-par 136 in the individual event.
Russell Knox finished joint second on 139 with rounds of 68 and 71.
Jamie Kennedy had a level par total of 142 (73-69) to finish joint seventh.
Stewart’s course record only stood for a few hours. In the second round, Jeff Dennis (North Florida) lowered it to 65.
The tournament was contested by four colleges who compete in the Atlantic Sun Conference of which Jacksvonille were champions in the 2005-2006 season. The new season’s championship will be played over the same Sanctuary Cove course next April.
