US HONOUR FOR RUSSELL KNOX
AND JACKSONVILLE RECRUIT A FOURTH
SCOT FOR THE NEW COLLEGE SEASON
Russell Knox from Inverness, a golf scholarship student at Jacksonville University, Florida, has been named a Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar.
Only juniors and seniors (third and fourth-year students) are eligible to be a Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar and must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average and a golf stroke average better than 76.0 in competitive play.
"This is a great honour for Russell and one that is well deserved," said Jacksonville University head golf coach Jim Taketa.
"When it’s time for golf, he goes out and devotes every ounce of energy to it and when it's time for school work, he does the same. This is a great achievement."
Knox had one of the best seasons in Jacksonville University’s golf programme history during 2005-2006.
He was chosen to play for Scotland in the European youth team championships in Spain last month.
Duncan Stewart from Grantown-on-Spey and Jamie Kennedy from Edinburgh are other Scots on the Jacksonville University golf roster.
The “Jacksonville Jocks” provided the backbone of the team that won the 2006 Atlantic Sun Conference championship and qualified to play in the NCAA East Regional championships.
The number of Scots on the roster is about to increase to four with the arrival of Keith Spence, one of the 19-year-old Kintore twins. Keith plays off a handicap of one at Newmachar.
"With the signing of Keith Spence, we now have a lot of depth at the No. 4 and 5 positions in the team,” said head coach Taketa.
"Keith has a lot of experience playing in some of the top junior events in Scotland and that will help him as he makes the transition to the collegiate level in the States. Keith is going to come in and compete for a spot on the travel squad right away. Competition for places makes players get better and his addition to the squad will be a big boost to our programme."
+Knox lost his first-round tie in the Scottish amateur championship at Nairn today but Stewart and Spence won theirs.
