SCOTTISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Hosted by Nairn Golf Club.
FORMER CHAMPION GEORGE MURRAY
BEATEN BY DONALD McCART (61)
George Murray (Earlsferry Thistle), winner of the title at Gullane two years ago and one of the eight seeds in this week's championship over the Nairn links, came a cropper in his first tie.
George went down by one hole to former Seniors Tour professional Donald McCart (Castlerock), now 61 and playing in his first "Scottish" since 1985 at Southerness. McCart played several times for Scotland in the late 1970s and had a spell on the European Seniors Tour until being reinstated to the amateur ranks last January.
Murray is the second seed to be dismissed so far. Scottish stroke-play champion Scott Hendry was beaten on the opening day.
Two seeds who are flourishing are Craigmillar Park Open winner Scott Jamieson from Cathkin Braes and Walker Cup player Richie Ramsay (Royal Aberdeen). They are both through to the third round with two wins under belt.
Jamieson followed up his Monday victory with a 7 and 6 win today over John McWilliams (West Linton). Jamieson had four birdies in the space of five holes and paid credit to SGU national coach Ian Rae from Huntly for putting him back in the groove with some fine tuning to his swing at Nairn.
Ramsay was a second-round 5 and 4 winner over Barry Gibson of Kemnay.
Forres international Bryan Fotheringham, a little bit unlucky not to be one of the eight pre-tournament seeds, found himself on the sidelines of the Nairn links he knows so well after only one match. Bryan lost to at the 19th to Alexander Main from Thornton. “Two up with five to play, never wins” is the old golfing adage and it proved true as far as Fotheringham was concerned.
He was two up on the 14th tee and then was hit by a two-under-par run from his Fife opponent.
Duncan Weir (Lundin), the R&A’s Golf Development Officer and no mean golfer, ran into a 6 and 5 beating from Aaron Howard (Murrayshall).
British boys’ finalist for the past two season, Jordan Findlay (Fraserburgh) looked in good nick as he beat Sandy Steven (Haggs Castle) by 5 and 4.
Findlay, who will soon be returning for his second year at East Tennessee State University, will have to be in good form for his next tie – against seeded Walker Cup man Lloyd Saltman (Craigielaw) who beat Matthew Clark (Kilmacolm) 4 and 3.
Former Scotland cap Bryan Innes (Murcar Links) had a clear-cut 6 and 5 win over Ian Angus (Duff House Royal) and now plays Iain Colquhoun (Ranfurly Castle). Colquhoun beat Sam Torrance’s son Daniel, a Wentworth member, by 4 and 3.
The cack-handed seeded player John Gallagher (Swanston) was taken to the 18th green before beating Stewart Elder (Kirkcaldy).
Aberdonian Terry Mathieson (Murcar Links), beaten semi-finalist in this championship at Western Gailes in 2002, had a good 6 and 5 win over Mark Lamb (Haddington), winner of the Scottish boys’ open stroke-play title at Peterhead in 2002.
Shaun McAllister (Craigielaw), winner of the Scottish Under-18 boys' open stroke-play championship at Alloa last week, beat David Mitchell (Leven Thistle) 5 and 4 to set up a tie against former Newmachar Golf Club director of golf Glen Taylor.
Reinstated to the amateur ranks within in the past year and a member at Meldrum House, Taylor has already won the North-east District match-play championship. He won his opening tie at Nairn by one hole agains tCraig Aitken from Oban.
