BRITISH BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP
SCOTT FRASER KNOCKS OUT ENGLAND
BOYS TEAM CAPTAIN SAM HUTSBY
Aberdonian Scott Fraser scored the best win of his golfing life so far at Balgownie today.
He knocked out the England boys' international team captain Sam Hutsby in the first round of the British boys' amateur championship over the Royal Aberdeen links.
"This is the first time I've played in the British championship. My handicap wasn't low enough before. I was hoping I would play well because it doesn't happen very often that you can play in a major championship on your doorstep," said Scott who plays most of his golf on the Kings Links on the other side of the River Don from Balgownie.
And Scott did indeed "play well" ... in fact very well.
He had four birdies on the inward half, including three in four holes from the 10th.
"I was three down after five holes because Sam birdied the first and the fifth but I just kept going," said Scott who got a hole back when he won the seventh with a par.
Then came his purple patch.
"I wedged to with 15ft of the hole and sank the putt for a birdie to win the 10th. Then I won the short 11th were Sam was bunkered. After that I won the long 12th with a two-putt birdie to take the lead for the first time."
Fraser then played another great approach shot, with a sand wedge, to 5ft of the cup, to birdie the 13th and go two holes up.
Hutsby, who won the Spanish open amateur championship early in the season when he whipped Edoardo Molinari (Italy), last year's US amateur champion,
won back the 14th where Fraser three-putted and the match was all square again at the 15th which Hutsby birdied from 3ft.
"It was getting quite exciting and we halved the 16th in birdie 3s," said Scott. "Then I got in front ahead with a par at the short 17th. Sam was bunkered there. And the last was halved after I laid by long approach putt dead coming downhill."
Scott was about level par for his memorable win.
