BRYAN LEADING SCOT AT PORTMARNOCK

IRISH OPEN AMATEUR STROKE-PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

Highlander Bryan Fotheringham from Forres shot a second-round, one-over-par 73 for a halfway total of three-over 147 in the AIB Irish open amateur stroke-play golf championship over the testing Portmarnock links today (Sat).

Fotheringham, who made the breakthrough into Scotland’s winning home internationals team last September, was five shots off the pace which continued to be set by overnight leader, Jonathan Caldwell (Clandeboye).

Caldwell, the current Ulster youths champion, has had rounds of 69 and 73 for 142 and a two-shot lead with about a third of the field to finish.

Paul O’Hara (Colville Park) moved up to the 149 mark with a 73, three shots better than his first-day effort.

The cack-handed John Gallagher (Swanston), last year’s beaten finalist in the British amateur, helped him also to make his debut in the home internationals, had a disappointing Saturday. He had a 78 for 152.

Euan McIntosh from Newmachar had an 81 for 157.

Scots among the later starters included George Murray (Earlsferry Thistle), beaten in a play-off for the Lytham Trophy last weekend, the Craigielaw brothers Elliot and Zack Saltman, Scott Jamieson (Cathkin Braes), Scott Hnry (Cardross) and Jonathan King (Glasgow).
