Wild west wind on the south bank of the River Dee

It's a Gray day in Scottish Par-3 championship
                                                                                    By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Lanark's Stephen Gray leads by two strokes with a two-under-par 52 at the halfway stage of the ASI Scottish par-3 championship at the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre, by demonstrating the short-game skills that have established him as one of the most consistent performers on the Tartan Tour.
A wild west wind - the same one that caused the cancellation of the final round in the EuroPro Tour event a few miles down the coast at Montrose - made it a tough day for even the most experienced competitors.
It blew some players, like New Zealand's Michael Campbell, who has links to Edinburgh in his ancestry, almost off the course with an 11-over par 65 for two circuits of the Graeme Webster-designed nine-hole course at Ardoe on Aberdeen's South Deeside Road.
Paul Lawrie (Gleneagles) himself and Greg Hutcheon (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) both shot five-over 59s - and were happy to salvage such scores and lie in joint 12th place overnight.
Gray had four birdie 2s - at the third, sixth, eighth and 16th - in halves of 25 (two under) and 27 (level par).
The Lanark man was pleased to register gains on a day when, if a player missed the green, he could be knee-high in long grass at some holes.
Lost balls contributed to the rounds over a 2,808yd course taking the best part of 4 1/2 to 5hrs.
Gray dislodged Somerset man David Dixon (Enmore Park) from the lead. Dixon's par-matching 54 had him the lead for some time. Dixon too had four birdie 2s - at the second ,fifth, 10th and 15th in halves of 27. Bogeys at the 16th and 17th cost him a share of the lead. The Englishman had earlier bogeyed the third and fourth.
Louis Gaughan (Bathgate), who took home the £3,500+ first prize from this event last year, is one of five players on  57 - five off the lead.
Andrew McArthur had a hole in one at the seventh, the 16th as he played it, but unfortunately for him the specil Cask of Whisky prize was for an ace at the fifth.
The leading lady pro is Vikki Laing from Musselburgh with a 58 which has her in 11th place, a spot and a stroke ahead of Heather MacRae (Elite Golf Academy).

AIRDRIE SAVE THE BEST FOR LAST TO SEAL VICTORY

Skycaddie Pro Captain Challenge Scottish qualifier: Results Release - Haggs Castle Golf Club

PGA NEWS RELEASE
Airdrie Golf Club emerged from the pack to secure a trip to Morocco for the SkyCaddie PGA Pro-Captain Challenge final.

Captain Brian Jamieson and PGA professional Simon McLean combined to finish with three successive birdies and clinch victory in the Scottish qualifying event held at Haggs Castle Golf Club in Glasgow.

That gave them 43 points from a seven under par round as they beat three other teams into second spot.

Fraser Malcolm and Jim Sear (Glen Golf Club), Colin Ferguson and Paul Little (Newbiggin-by-the-Sea Golf Club) and Mark Ridley and David Elgy  (South Moor Golf Club) all tied on 41 points.

The Airdrie pairing will now play in the £22,000 final, in association with Golfplan, which will be held between November 21-22 at Mazagan Beach Resort, Casablanca.

And 12 handicapper Jameson was able to contribute with four nett birdies - one on the front nine and three on the back as the North Lanarkshire duo ended the day in winning fashion.

“Simon drove the ball magnificently even though he’s not playing a lot of golf at the moment,” said Jamieson, a 57-year-old electronic engineer who has been a member at Airdrie for 25 years after swapping rugby for golf.

“He excelled himself and he could’ve had another three or four birdies to be honest. We said we had a great score at the end, but it could’ve been even better. He had birdie opportunities at the majority of holes.

“It’s a great prize for us to go to Morocco but I didn’t know what was at stake during the event. You’re generally only captain for a year so you don’t realise what tournaments you can be invited to, this came along and Simon said I should make sure I can play as it’s a good fun day.

“But Haggs Castle was an excellent course, the greens were fantastic, and the hospitality was tremendous. So to get to the final in Morocco was a great bonus.”

McLean was left celebrating the fact that they produced their key shots right at the end.

“It was a really strong finish that got us over the line, I thought we were running out of holes but Brian chipped in with two nett birdies and I birdied the 18th hole,” said McLean.

“Seven under par was good because it wasn't easy, it was windy and blustery. But the course was a joy, it’s hard to imagine a better putting surface than Haggs Castle.”

Gavin makes hay while the sun shines at

Turriff with a double whammy success

Gavin Hay, second left, and the Morrison Motors team he led to victory in the Turriff pro-am team event.

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Highlander Gavin Hay (Grantown-on-Spey), pictured above, came down from the hills to score a double whammy victory in today's pro-am at Turriff Golf Club.

Hay won the first prize of £1,041 with a four-under-par 66 to head a field of 24 pros and he also led the Morrison Motors trio of amateurs to victory in the pro-am with a 15-under-par better ball of 125. The first five pros in that (Hay, G McBain, S Henderson, C Ronald and S Gray), earned £125 each. Which all added up to Gavin's biggest payday on the Tartan Tour this year.
It was Hay's second win of the season, his first coming at Ayr Belleisle last month shortly after he had finished joint second in the Northern Open at Lossiemouth.
Hay had an eagle 3 at the sixth and a birdie at the 13th before a grandstand finish saw him birdie the 16th, 17th and 18th to come home in three-under 31.
His two bogeys came at the fifth and short 15th.
Greig Hutcheon (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre Inchmarlo) and Peterhead's Ross Cameron (Saltire Energy) finished second and third, completing a 1-2-3 by North and North-east pros.
Hutch had seven birdies in his 67. He covered the inward half in 31 strokes but a bogey at the 17th cost him a share of first place although an £833 payslip was a nice consolation prize.
Cameron had a double bogey 7 at the 12th in his 69 which earned him £625.
The three amateurs in the Meldrum Motors winning team with Gavin Hay were Colin Chalmers (handicap 15), Douglas Shand (14) and Graham Fraser (17).

Gareth Wright wins AAM Scottish Open

qualifier, amateur Sandy Scott third
Quartet of qualifiers: l to r Paul O'Hara, Sandy Scott, Gareth Wright and Jack Doherty. Picture by Kenny Smith

PGA in SCOTLAND NEWS RELEASE
West Linton PGA professional Gareth Wright won the Aberdeen Asset Managment Scottish Open qualifier for the second time in three years today.
He finished three shots clear of the field at Kilmarnock (Barassie), where fellow pros Jack Doherty and Paul O'Hara, as well as Nairn amateur Sandy Scott, were the others to secure spots in the £5.5 million event at Dundonald Links.
Wright laid the foundations for his third consecutive success in this event with a brilliant nine-under-par 64 on Saturday and backed that up with a solid 71 in the second round.
The Edinburgh-based Welshman managed to save par at the first after having to take a penalty drop from a bush, then covered the next 14 holes in regulation figures before making back-to-back birdies at the 16th and 17th.
He finished with an impressive 11-under-par total, given that the opening round was played in a breeze and it was then wet and miserable for most of the second circuit on the Ayrshire coast.
"It is great to be in a Rolex Series event that is being headlined by Rory McIlroy," said Wright. "I also have good memories from Dundonald, having shot a 62 there in a Tartan Tour event a few years back."
Doherty, last year's winner, progressed again after two rounds of 69, his wife Jocelyn caddieing for him in the second circuit.
"She is definitely the best-looking caddie I've ever had," he said, smiling, after signing off with a birdie, though he would have made it through without that.
"That's two years in a row now and it feels nice to be playing in a Scottish Open just 15 minutes from my house," added the Kilmarnock man.
US college student Scott, a 19-year-old from Nairn, emulated the success of Tantallon's Calum Hill in the inaugural qualifier at North Berwick two years ago as he passed the test on this occasion with flying colours.
Winner of both the Scottish boys' stroke-play and Scottish youths' titles last year, Scott birdied the last two holes for a best-of-the-day 67 to finish third on seven-under.
This success makes up for the disappointment of Scott missing out on a place in the six-strong Scotland side set to defend the European team championship in Austria this coming week.
"I was disappointed about that, of course, but to have this as a consolation is fantastic," said the young Highlander.
"I went to a couple of Scottish Opens at Castle Stuart and now it is great to know I will be playing in it."
O'Hara, winner of both the Northern Open and the PGA Professional Championship in recent weeks, will now get the chance to test himself against some of the best players in the world after securing a first European Tour start.
The North Lanarkshire Leisure-attached player rolled in a 30-foot eagle putt at the first extra hole to win a play-off against Kirkhill amateur Craig Ross after they had finished tied for fourth on six-under.
"This continues my recent good form and now I am looking forward to my first European Tour event as a player, having caddied for my brother Steven in plenty," said O'Hara.

weather-hit Highland Links pro-am

Graham Fox (Clydeway Golf) won the top pro prize of £7,000 with an eight-under-par 36-hole total in the Highland Links pro-am, decided on the players' scores at Royal Dornoch and Nairn after high winds ruled out Castle Stuart as a counting venue.
Fox had a seven-under-par 64 at Nairn - a brilliant score - and a one-under 69 at Royal Dornoch.
Fox won by one shot from Chris Currie (Caldwell who had a 69 at Nairn and a 65 at Royal Dornoch for 134. Curried earned £5,800.
Greg McBain (Newmachar) finished third on 136 with a pair of 68s and earned £5,000.
The pro-am team event ended in a tie on 175pt between the Moorings Hotel team of Stewart Leitch (handicap 10), John Cramond (3) and Ian McKinnon (11) with Greg McBain as their pro.
They pipped Chris Currie and the Quality Time team of Alfred Bryce-Maynard, Graham Murray and Andrew Shade.
The countback came down to the teams' points totals at Nairn with the Moorings Hotel side's 93pt proving decisive.

Hutcheon wins Carnegie Invitational for third

time - by three shots at Skibo Castle

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Greig Hutcheon  (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre Inchmarlo) scored his third win in the £59,000 Carnegie Invitational at the Skibo Castle course today, a five-under-par total of 137 winning him the £6,000 first prize by three strokes.
Alastair Forsyth (Mearns Castle), Graham Fox (Clydeway Golf) and Stephen Gray (Lanark) tied for second place on 140 and earned £4,000 each.
Hutcheon's previous wins in the lucrative tournament were achieved in 2007 and 2010.
Greig's final round started inauspiciously with bogeys at the first two holes but he snapped into title-winning gear with birdies at the long third, short fourth, long fifth and seventh to turn in 33 (two under par).
More birdies followed, at the short 13th, long 15th and 17th, and bogeys at the 16th and long 18th only reduced his winning margin.
Fox (72-68) had six birdies, including the 17th and 18th, in halves of 34 while Forsyth (67-73) ran up a double bogey 7 at the closing hole for 38 home.
Gray, the 2014 winner, had rounds of 71 and 69.

In-form O'Hara leads chase for £2,324 prize at Dumfries and Galloway

Man in form Paul O'Hara is the halfway leader of the £14,530 Kerr Investments Order of Merit 36-hole pro-am at Dumfries and Galloway Golf Club.

Winner of the Scottish young professionals' championship earlier this week, for the third time in the past four years, O'Hara (pictured) shot a bogey-free, six-under par 64 to lead by one from Alastair Forsyth, Jason McCreadie, Graham Fox and Graeme Brown.

O'Hara birdied the first, long fifth, short eighth, ninth, short 15th and 17th in halves of 32.
Forsyth bogeyed the 18th or else he would have been sharing the lead.
McCreadie had a bogey-free round but parred the last two holes when a sixth birdie would have given him a share of the lead.]
Brown had a double bogey 6 at the 10th but responded with birdies at the 14th, 16th and 17th.
Fox's four birdies stopped at the 14th and he parred in.

Haggs Castle proud to be a PGA venue

PGA NEWS RELEASE
Haggs Castle captain John Leitch says the Glasgow club are bucking the trend in terms of membership as they prepare to host the Golfplan Insurance Pro Captain Challenge Scottish qualifying event.
Leitch will partner host pro Campbell Elliott for the event which takes place this week (August 12) with a host of teams aiming to win a place in the £25,000 final which takes place at Spanish destination Lumine Mediterranean Beach and Golf Community.
The resort, which features two Greg Norman designs, will stage the event over 36 holes from Wednesday, November 30 - Thursday, December 1.
And five handicapper Leitch says he is proud that the PGA have chosen their club to host the event once more.
“We have no input into why the PGA choose us, but we must be doing something right,” said the 56-year-old retired newspaper executive.
“As for myself and Campbell qualifying for the final, I don’t know about that, but we will certainly enjoy being the host club again.
“It is a chance for us to show off and showcase what we have here. We have an excellent venue and a strong membership.
“In fact we are bucking the trend at Haggs Castle when it comes to members. At a time when golf club membership has tended to fall generally, we’ve not found that to be the case.
“Events like this only serve to enhance the prestige of hosting PGA tournaments.
“And it’s always good to have the best Scottish professionals coming here for this event.”
Elliott added that the venue is well thought of in Scotland.
“There is a definite pedigree about the course. We’ve hosted this qualifying event on a number of occasions now and we’re very proud to be able to do that,” he said.
Among the teams taking part in the Haggs Castle qualifier are: Craig Everett and Des McLaughlin (Caldwell Golf Club); Ian Graham and Hugh O'Donnell (Crow Wood GC); Ian Taylor  and Derek Totten (Drumpellier GC);  Norman Huguet and Alex Chisolm (Musselburgh GC);  Stuart Kerr and Charles Beattie  (Strathaven GC) and Simon McLean and John McAuley (Airdrie GC).

Hutch leads by three with a round to go in
Northern Open
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Greig Hutcheon does not often lose the lead after occupying the pole position with one round to go - and, with a commanding lead of three shots after 54 holes of the £30,000 Northern Open at Royal Dornoch, it is almost a case of "who's gonna be second?"
But Hutch, pictured, the 2010 "Northern" winner who now plays out of the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre Inchmarlo, will certainly not be counting his chickens as he tees off on nine-under-201, three ahead of Greg McBain (Newmachar) and Chris Kelly and five in front of the joint third-placed Louis Gaughan (Bathgate) and Scott Henderson (Kings Links) on 206.
Hutcheon had a bag of eight birdies in a five-under-par 65 at the Sutherland venue.
The 43-year-old  sits on nine-under-par, increasing his slender overnight advantage to three shots over defending champion Kelly (67) and McBain (64).
Hutcheon's victory at Meldrum House five years ago was claimed over 36 holes due to bad weather, so it would probably give him a sense of satisfaction if he emulated that triumph over the full distance.
“I’m really looking forward to tomorrow and I just need to keep it going," he said. “I would like to shoot all four days in the 60s - that would be great.”
On a day when the wind was blowing in the opposite direction from the opening two rounds, the leader stormed to the turn in 32 following birdies at the first, third, sixth and seventh before making further gains coming home at the 12th, 13th and 15th.
“I played a lot better today and also didn’t make any clubbing errors," added Hutcheon, who finished as the leading PGA pro in last month's BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
Kelly kept alive his hopes of becoming the event's first back-to-back winner since 1994, when Montrose pro Kevin Stables achieved the feat at the same venues, with a 67 that was lit up by four birdies in five holes from the 11th.
"It was pretty rubbish on the way out, but I was able to hold it together," said the Cupar-based 38-year-old. “I’m three shots back on Greig, but that can change in one hole, so anything can happen tomorrow."
Newmachar pro McBain, who served his PGA training at Royal Dornoch, used his local knowledge to equal the best round of the week with a flawless 64, which included an eagle-3 at the ninth.
“It could have been a wee bit better as I missed a few chances, but you would take a 64 round here all day long," he said. “I will just go out tomorrow, do what I have been doing all week and see where that takes us.”
Kings Links Golf Centre man Scott Henderson, the 1996 winner, and Bathgate's Louis Gaughan are sitting joint-fourth on two-under after matching 68s.
An exciting finish lies in store in the battle for the Bookless Cup, which is awarded to the leading amateur.
After a level-par 70 to sit on four-over, Boat of Garten’s Jordan Shaw leads by one in that race from the host club's Chris Mailley (72), with another Royal Dornoch member Craig Mackay a shot further back after the same third-round score.

Graham Fox wins Bishopbriggs pro-am with

record 63 after 64s by Hay, Forsyth

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
It was a "record day" at the Bishopbriggs Golf Club pro-am today!
First Gavin Hay (Grantown on Spey) posted a new course record of seven-under-par 64 with the help of eight birdies and one bogey and was joined very shortly in the lead by Alastair Forysth (Mearns Castle) who had a bogey-free, seven-birdie 64.
But before the paint was dry on the new record mark, in came man in form Graham Fox (Clydeway Golf), beaten in a play-off for the P and H Championship last week, lowered the record again ... to eight-under 63.
Fox, who earned £1,416 for his great round, had bogey-free halves of 32 and 31 with the birdies coming in sequences - sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, 10th  and at the end of the round birdies at the 16th, 17th and 18th.
Hay and Forsyth pocketed £991 each.
Last year's Scottish professional champion Chris Kelly (unattached) led the amateur team of Thomas Murray (handicap 12), Vince Echline (20) and Gavin Cunningham (11) to victory in the pro-am team competition with a 17-under-par net score of 54.
