Italy’s Matteo Cristoni
Italy’s in-form Matteo Cristoni has been crowned the Scottish Boys Under-16 Champion at Fortrose and Rosemarkie in the Scottish Highlands, north of Inverness.
Cristoni, a 16-year old native of Modena in Northern Italy, returned impressive rounds of 69-70-69-67 to finish on 9-under par and seal a two shot victory.
A truly international field assembled in the Scottish Highlands, which saw Welshman Connor Owen secure solo second spot on 7-under, with Martin Couvra (France) finishing in third, a further two shots behind.
Blairgowrie’s Cormac Sharpe was the top Scot, finishing up in 4th position on a total of 4-under par.
Today’s victory was Cristoni’s second national title in a fruitful period, with the youngster also winning the Italian Boys Championship on home soil three weeks ago.
Cristoni said “I played very, very well this week, the course was playing difficult in the wind, but I managed to make a lot of birdies and I’m delighted to win.
“The Scottish Highlands are beautiful, with a lot of beautiful people and I have really enjoyed my time here.
In 2019, the Scottish Boys Under-16 Open Championship will take place in Edinburgh, at the Royal Burgess Golfing Society ( July 9-11).
