four in Carnegie Shield match-play
By ROBIN WILSON
Former Walker Cup golfer and team captain, Northern
Ireland's Garth McGimpsey, who won the British Amateur Championship at Royal
Dornoch in 1985, led the thirty two qualifiers into the match-play stages of the
Carnegie Shield at Royal Dornoch this week with scores of 71 and 68.
He emerged unscathed in round one but unfortunately when one
ahead in his second round tie against former three time American winner, Andrew
Biggadike (Olympic GC) he had to retire with an injured arm when playing an
awkward bunker shot at the 11th hole.
The second qualifier local Bryan Urquhart, who shot a first
round four under par 66 is also out, beaten at the 20th in round two
by Graham Bell (Bathgate) as is also the holder Inverness's John Forbes, beaten
in round three by Fortrose's Alan Cameron.
Biggadike is the only former winner through to Saturday's semi-finals after ousting the last remaining local, Chris Mailley, on
the last green. The American will meet Cameron in the first semi-final and the other semi-final is between Banchory's Jack Harling and Ian
Rennie (Hindhead)
