Boyd Quaich International students' tournament at St Andrews

Aberdonian Fisher in the mix with a

68 over New Course

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Aberdeen's Adam Fisher, a student at Missouri State University) was among the pacesetters as the earlier starters had the best of the weather for the first round of the Boyd Quaich international three-day students' tournament.

The mid-afternoon drizzle was constant and made scoring tough over the New and Old Courses at St Andrews.
Fisher, pictured, shot a three-under par 68 over the New Course, to end the day, one shot behind the leader at this venue, and also overall, Eoin Leonard (Yale University).
Leonard had seven birdies in his four-under 67 - at the first, second, third, fourth, eighth, 12th and 13th in halves of 31 and 36. Bogeys at the 11th, 17th and 18th, prevented him from spreadeagling the international field.
Defending champion George Burns (St Andrews) had a 70 at the New Course.
Best score over the Old Course was Daniel Lloyd (Central Lancashire) with a one-under 71, which included birdies at the third, fifth and 13th in halves of 35 and 36. He bogeyed the Road Hole 17th when looking like leading the Old Course field by two shots.
Lewis West (Robert Gordon University) is well up the Old Course scores with a 72, one behind Lloyd. West had a chance to tie with Lloyd but let it slip with bogeys at the 15th and 16th in halves of 35 and 37. He did birdie the fifth and 18th.
Liverpool’s Louis Birchall aced the fifth hole on the New Course, which helped him round in a useful 70.
The 69th running of the prestigious Boyd Quaich, organised by The University of St Andrews and supported by The RandA, attracts student golfers from all over the world. The second round will begin at 7:00am on Wednesday, followed by a 36 hole cut to the leading 30, followed by Round 3 on Wednesday afternoon over the New Course.
The fourth and final round will be on Thursday morning over the Old Course
