Carrick Neill Scottish men's amateur stroke play championship

Scots Craig Howie, Johnston and Syme in the leading quartet at halfway stage

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
With three Scots in the leading four overnight, there must be a fair chance that the Carrick Neill Scottish men's open amateur stroke-play championship will be won by a Scot at Western Gailes tomorrow.
Craig Howie (Peebles) (71-64) and Liam Johnston (Dumfries and County) (69-66) share the lead on seven-under-par 135 with Australian Micheluzzi, and Connor Syme (Drumoig) (66-70) is breathing down their necks on the 136 mark.
There are two rounds to squeeze in on Sunday, of course, and a lot can happen over two rounds of golf.
Players with 36-hole tallies of 144 and better qualified for Sunday's play. The most notable who failed to make it was last year's Scottish amateur champion from Windyhill, George Duncan, a student at an American university. He missed out by only one shot with two steady rounds of 72 and 73.
