Bell leads by one with a round to go in Scottish seniors

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Overnight leader Graham Bell (Downfield) did not repeat the form that earned him a blistering five-under-par 66 but a second round of two-over 73 for three-under 139 was good enough to see him retain a narrow advantage going into the final round of the Scottish senior men's open amateur championship at Royal Burgess Golf Society, Edinburgh.
Bell  had birdies at the seventh, eighth and 16th but they were outnumbered by his  bogeys at the second, third, fourth, 10th and 18th in halves of 36 and 37.
His closest challenger, with a lot of experience of playing in the final group at a championship event, is Leeds' Stephen East (Wike Ridge). He closed the gap on Bell to one shot with rounds of 68 and 72 for 140.
Player with 36-hole tallies of 151 and better qualified for the third and final round.
The only Scots, apart from Bell, in the top 20 are Tom McLevy (Blairgowrie) (70-72 for 142) in fifth place, John Fraser (Royal Burgess) (74-70) and David Shields (Glenearn) (70-74), both sharing 11th place on 144  and Nairn's Robert Smith (73-72) a shot behind in the group on 145
