Lumsden and MacIntyre lose evening fourth

round ties at The Amateur Championship

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
No Scots have made it through to Friday morning's quarter-finals of The Amateur Championship at Royal St George's Golf Club Sandwich in Kent.
Due to a suspension of play around lunchtime due to thunder and lightning, the fourth round ties were being played well into the evening and it was in this session that left-hander Robert MacIntyre from Oban, beaten in last year's final, and Anglo-Scot Ryan Lumsden (Royal Wimbledon) had their hopes dashed.
MacIntyre was one up after eight and two up after 13 holes against Fredrik Nilehn but his Swedish opponent had squared it after 17 holes and Nilehn KO'd the gallant Scot by winning the 18th for the match and a place in the last eight.
Lumsden (Royal Wimbledon), a student at Northwestern University, Illinois , was beaten by two holes by Jarle Kaldestad Volden (Norway), having been one up after 11 holes but one down after 16.
schedule..
Earlier, Lumsden, pictured, had a very good one-hole win over Irishman Stuart Grehan (Tullamore) who, on paper at last, was the favourite to make progress.
Craig Howie (Peebles) had a ding dong struggle with Kristoffer Ventura (Norway) before losing at the 20th in the third round.
MacIntyre joined Lumsden in the last 16 with a one-hole third-round victory over George Baylis (Mill Ride), from Ascot and a student at the University of Akron, Ohio.

OTHER NEWS: Top seed Caolan Rafferty (Dundalk) was beaten at the 25th in a marathon third-round tie against Alejandro Tosti (Argentina) who this evening qualified for the quarter-finals with a 4 and 3 win over Charlie Strickland (Ham Manor.
Tosti will play S Mazzoli (Italy) for a place in the last four. Tosti this evening beat Z Murray (Australia) 3 and 2.
Harry Ellis (Meon Valley) is the only Englishman in the last eight. He beat Craig Howie's conqueror, Ventura, by 3 and 1 in the evening fourth round.
England's Jack Singh Brar (Remedy Oak) lost by one hole to Irishman Paul McBride (The Island) in the fourth round.
