JOLLY ROGER PERFORMANCE - STEPHEN

JOINT FIFTH IN WALES

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Former North-east Under-18 champion Stephen Roger (Cruden Bay) finished a creditable joint fifth behind runaway winner, England's Gian-Marco Petrozzi (Trentham), in the Welsh men's open amateur stroke play championship at the Vale Resort today (Sunday).
Petrozzi, pictured below,

outclassed the field with rounds of 66, 69, 70 and 74 for a 13-under-par total of 279 for the par-73 lay-out.
He won by nine shots from compatriot Jack Gaunt (Drayton Park) with Welshman Jack Davidson (Llanwern) third on 289.

Roger totalled a par-matching 292 with scores of 75, 69, 72 and 76.  He started his final round well enough with birdies at the first and second but it was tough going for the North-east youngster after that.

He bogeyed the third, fifth, sixth, seventh and 12th for halves of 38.
Jeff Wright from Forres was the next best Scot, sharing 12th place on 295 with rounds of 74, 74, 72 and 72. Wright birdied the 15th and had an eagle 3 at the 16th in his last round - figures which Stephen Roger would have appreciated.
In all, Scotland had seven players in the final top 20 - not a bad effort a long way from home!
