Hazlehead and Craibstone upset the odds to

beat Royal Aberdeen and Banchory

Defending champions Murcar Links made a confident start to the 101st City of Aberdeen men's double foursomes for the Maitland Shield by beating Auchmill by nine holes overall at Portlethen Golf Club this evening.
Adrian Style and Bryan Innes finished five holes up while Anthony Bews and Ronnie Brechin had a four-hole winning margin.
Newmachar, the 2016 title winners, had an even bigger win on the first night. They beat Stonehaven by 15 holes with the second string of Calvin Cheyne and Chris Simpson providing a 10-hole winning margin over Kiefer Brown and Steve Guzik.
But the surprise winners of the opening evening were Hazlehead, who beat Royal Aberdeen by three holes, and Craibstone, who won a very tight one against Banchory by one hole.
Hazlehead heroes were Liam Strath and Greig Kennedy, who finished three up on Mark Halliday and Nick Macandrew, and Jack Pirie and Alasdair Macgregor who held Donald Macandrew and Daniel Sim to a square match.
Senior golfer Macgregor won't be playing for Hazlehead on Wednesday night.
"I was only filling in for Greg Ingram who had another commitment Monday night. Glad to have done my bit for the team though," said Alasdair.
Craibstone's winning quartet were Craig Wilkinson and John Borthwick, who finished one up on Jack Harling and Ferghus Milne, and Mark McDonald Ian Still who had a square match with Banchory's Roy Black and Scott Larkin.
As luck would have it, Hazlehead and Craibstone will meet in Wednesday's quarter-finals. Hazlehead lost to Portlethen in last year's semi-finals.
Northern, the other 2016 beaten semi-finalists, play their first tie this evening, against Peterculter.
The tournament is sponsored by Molly's Bistro and Malones Irish Bar of the Douglas Hotel in Market Street, Aberdeen. Why don't you give them YOUR custom?
