HOWIE BROTHERS TO THE FORE AT

CRAIGMILLAR PARK

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
The Howie brothers from Peebles were well to the fore in the first round of the Craigmillar Park Open, an SGU 72-hole order of merit event at the Edinburgh this weekend.
Darren, the young brother, led the field with a five-under par 65 on a day when the parkland's par of 70 was easy meat for the players in good playing conditions.
Darren shot six birdies in halves of 32 and 33.
Sharing second places, only one off the pace, were brother Craig Howie, a former Scottish boys' match-play champion, local player Andy Utterson and Malcolm Pennycott (Royal Burgess).
Craig Howie had five birdies and one bogey; Utterson six birdies but two bogeys, and Pennycott had the best birdie run of anyone in the field. He birdied the second, third, fourth, fifth and six but blotted his copybook with bogeys at the seventh and ninth in 32 to the turn. He gained a sixth birdie at the 14th in a bogey-free inward half.
Graeme Robertson (Glenbervie), winner of the Scottish Champion of Champions tournament at Leven on April 2, had an opening 68. He is a former winner of the Craigmillar Park Open.
