Russell Knox bowed out of the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play as his final outing before the Masters ended in a disappointing defeat by Danny Willett who will be defending the Green Jacket at Augusta National in a fortnight’s time.
Willett had lost both his opening matches in Group 11 at Austin Country Club in Texas before defeating Knox 4 and 2 today to kill off the Scot’s hopes of progressing to the last 16 in the £7.8 million tournament.
The loss denied Knox a place in a play-off to determine the winner of the bracket after American Bill Haas beat South Korea’s K T Kim by the same margin in the other match to leave that pair both sitting on two points.
It was the second year in a row that Knox had bowed out after the group stage, his exit on this occasion coming despite the 17th seed beating six-time US PGA Tour winner Haas 3 and 2 in the opening round of matches.
