HENRY LEADS BY SIX WITH A ROUND TO GO IN ALLIANCE CHAMPIONSHIP

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
John Henry is almost home and dry in the Scottish Golfers' Alliance championship at Irvine Golf Club.
Leader by two shots after round one, the Clydebank and District pro stretched his advantage to SIX strokes after a 71 for four-under-par 138 in much tougher, windy conditions at the Ayrshire venue.
Henry said after his round:
"Much tougher conditions today with strong winds. Hence the scoring being poorer.
"I started with a lost ball up the right gorse at the first and marked up a double bogey right away but managed to get to one under par after 8 holes and parred my way to 17 where I made bogey - a very tough hole today into the wind !
"Looking forward to the final round. The tournament is providing some good preparation for the EuroPro Tour championship in a couple of weeks' time."
With only one round to go, John Duff (Newmachar) and Jim Johnston (Ayr Belleisle) may be the only players with a remote chance of catching Henry if he should slip over the final rounds.
Duff has had rounds of 69 and 75 for 144, a total matched by Johnston's steadier scores of 71 and 73.
Fourth-placed Neil Henderson (Renaissance is eight strokes behind Henry after scores of 71 and 75.

Duncan Stewart heading for European Tour

promotion in 2017

FROM THE CHALLENGE TOUR WEBSITE
Duncan Stewart arrived at Terre dei Consoli Golf Club, Italy for this week's Challenge Tour event  in high spirits after a tied fourth finish in the Kazakhstan Open all-but secured his European Tour card for next season.
The Scot, who won the Challenge de Madrid at the start of the 2016 Road to Oman, has now earned 93,950 points to sit in eighth spot in the Rankings with five events to go.

Dunc The 32 year old would be forgiven for now easing off a bit – indeed, a lengthy and well-deserved celebration followed his result in Almaty – but he is now targeting further good results, starting at this week’s Terre dei Consoli Open, to keep climbing the Rankings.
“I would think I’m there now,” he said. “It’s one of those ones where I’d be very surprised if, even if I missed the cut in the next four events and came last at the Grand Final, I’d be at about 97,000 so something would have to go bizarrely wrong not to finish in the top 15.
“But it’s not entirely job done, and I want to finish as high up as possible because there’s obviously a few events where if you’re in the top five you’ll get in but otherwise maybe not, so there’s still a bit of work to be done.
“In Kazakhstan, I played alright on Saturday in perfect conditions and then on Sunday it was just like a December day in Scotland, it was brutal, and I played great – I was hating every second of it but sometimes you just get your head down and get on with it, and go back to what you grew up playing in.
“I just played well at the right time, and it’s the right event to play well in – I picked up almost the same amount of money as I did from winning in Madrid, so it’s huge.
“I didn’t really do too much before this final stretch. I had a couple of weeks at home and just tried to keep things ticking over but I tried to relax as much as possible because I knew these six weeks were going to be pretty big.
“I was trying to get the job done in Kazakhstan but you never know what’s going to happen – to get that done was great, and the celebrations on Sunday were maybe a little bit over the top, but after the last two years and the way I’ve played, it’s a big relief.
“I thought top seven in Kazakhstan would get me to what was enough in my head – I thought 85,000, which is five grand more than the last couple of years, would be enough.
“But you just never know in this game, it depends who goes and wins. I’m definitely past the number that I thought so the aim now is to finish as high as possible, maybe even win the Rankings – there’s a lot of big events left, so top five is definitely the goal now.”

Dunc Standing in Stewart’s way this week is the testing Terre dei Consoli course on the outskirts of Rome, with length off the tee looking like it will be an important asset.
Though that is not the Spey Valley native’s strength, he will nonetheless draw on good memories of the Challenge Tour’s last visit to Italy, where opening rounds of 66 and 67 put him in contention at the Montecchia Open by Lyoness
“The course looks like a bit of a beast,” he said. “That doesn’t really suit my game, but last week was long too and it went alright.
“The pressure’s not as high as it has been, so that could work in my favour to just go out there and be relaxed, and hopefully put some more points on the board and move up a few more spots.
“I played well in Montecchia but just fell away in the last few holes, so I quite like coming to Italy, if it stays sunny like this, but hopefully I can have another good week.”

Kay shares lead but Lawrie and Cameron

Dunbar's Daniel Kay is sitting pretty in a share of the halfway lead at the European Tour Qualifying School Stage 2 tournament at Frilford Heath in the South of England.

BB and O meet Lancashire in last-day title-

decider at English senior men's county finals

The battle of the champions will unfold tomorrow as BB and O and Lancashire go head-to-head in the title-deciding match at the English Senior Men’s County Finals.
BB and O (Berks, Bucks and Oxon) are the defending champions, while Lancashire were the 2014 winners – and they’re practically neck and neck so far in this year’s championship finale at Chipping Sodbury Golf Club in Gloucestershire.
After the first two days of the round-robin tournament they each have two wins apiece, with BB and O beating Worcestershire 7-2 today, while Lancashire defeated Devon 5.5-3.5. Lancashire hold a slender advantage, having won 14 games to BB and O’s 13 and that detail will come into the reckoning if they draw tomorrow.
“We are delighted to beat Worcestershire and set up a shoot-out with Lancashire,” said BB and O captain Ashley Brewer. “We are looking forward to having the opportunity to defend our title at the last hurdle.”
Lancashire manager Mike Grey commented: “Devon are very worthy opponents. They gave BB and O a tough game and they gave us a tough game. I am very glad we came through.”
Looking ahead to tomorrow, he added: “It will be a good tussle, bring it on!”
Today’s matches were  played in a strong and swirling breeze which made club selection and putting difficult. Tomorrow, the wind is again predicted to be a factor. However the conditions clearly had little impact on BB and O’s Andrew Stracey. After teaming up with David Niven to contribute to the team’s 3-0 scoreline in the morning foursomes, the former England international sped off to win his singles by 8 and 7. The team’s win was sealed by Scottish international Malcolm Reid who made a good start with a couple of early birdies and signed off a 4 and 3 winner.
“It was really difficult to judge the wind and we got it wrong a number of times, but I probably just chipped and putted a bit better,” he said. He was followed by Tim Whittaker, who also won 4 and 3, and Adrian Donkersley, who won the last two holes to finish two up.
Afterwards Brewer noted, with a smile, that his game plan for the day meant: “I had the nerve to drop a Scottish international (Reid) this morning and an England international and county champion of champions (Niven) this afternoon! We are a team of eight.”
The match between Lancashire and Devon was a close fight, although the Northerners always held the edge. They led 2-1 after the foursomes, but at the halfway stage of the singles, were leading in two, down in one and all square in three.
The game between Lancashire’s international Ian Crowther and Tim Aggett of Devon was among those which reached the turn all square. But Crowther edged ahead on the 13th and put the first singles point on the board when he birdied the 16th to win 3 and 2.
“The wind was such a big factor,” he said. “It was swirling and circling around and it threw both of us, but I had a couple of good holes and a birdie to finish.”
Behind him Trevor Foster was fighting to hold on to his lead. The Lancashire player was four up after 10 but, as he struggled to hole the telling putts, his opponent pulled him back to just one up after 15. Foster missed a five-footer on 17 which would have given him the win, but he slotted a 6ft putt for his point on the last – then headed straight for the practice green, vowing to return tomorrow with a different putter.
Andrew Westwell provided Lancashire’s third and crucial singles point with his 4 and3 win. He won four holes in a row from the ninth and, after a bogey on the first, played the next 13 holes in two-under.
Westwell, who has been having lessons with England coach Graham Walker, said: “This is the best I’ve played for a while, I didn’t make any mistakes and gave myself lots of birdie chances. I was really pleased in this wind.”
Lancashire’s score was completed by the half of Alan Gillespie who was relieved when his charging putt on the 18th hit the hole and died inches away from the cup.

Leona Maguire's third place finish and Lisa has

her second best US total

DUKE UNIVERSITY NEWS RELEASE
GOLF, Illinois – Over the first two tournaments of the 2016-17 campaign, Duke University’s Leona Maguire has combined to shoot 17-under-par, but the junior is still looking for her first win of the college season as she placed third overall at the Windy City Classic Tuesday with an eight-under-par, 208.
Maguire has been outstanding in the first two tournaments and has just missed collecting her fifth victory of her Duke career.  She shot nine-under-par in the Annika Intercollegiate and was only two shots off the individual lead, while in the Windy City Collegiate Classic she was also two shots off individual medallist Andrea Lee of Stanford (206).
A native of Cavan, Ireland, Leona Maguire (pictured right) featured another strong start to her round Tuesday as she held a two-under-par ledger through 11 holes as she connected on birdies on No. 7 and No. 11.  Maguire posted bogeys on No. 12 and No. 14 to fall back to even par.  She drained her third birdie of the day on the 505-yard, par five 15th to return to red numbers, but suffered another bogey on No. 17 and par on No. 18 to finish at even par.
With an aggregate of 221, Leona Maguire's twin sister  Lisa carded her second-best 54-hole output in her US college career over the last two days.  Maguire signed for rounds of 74, 74 and 73 to finish tied 32nd.  It was her best finish since a tied for 27th placement as a freshman at the Tar Heel Invitational.
Lisa Maguire,  pictured left,  turned in six pars, two bogeys and a birdie on the 375-yard, par four fifth hole on the front nine as she made the turn at one-over, 37.  On the back, she rolled in a birdie on the par four 10th and then had seven pars along with a bogey on No. 14.  Lisa had a season-best 27 putts, while hitting nine fairways and eight greens.
As a team, Duke finished fifth overall with rounds of 288, 291 and 293 for a 54-hole collection of 872.  Georgia took home the team title with a 10-under-par, 854, with Stanford (858), Southern California (859), Florida (865) and Duke (872) in the top five.
“There were many positives in this tournament,” commented Duke head coach Dan Brooks.  “Along with Leona's near win, Sandy (Choi) was knocking it close all three rounds. Lisa's hard work on her swing showed positive signs, and she had some great up and downs.  Developmentally, we are right on target.”

Duke will next compete in the Tar Heel Invitational Oct. 14-16 at Finley Golf Club in Chapel Hill, N.C.
