Italians hog the limelight in Monza

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Francesco Molinari fired a bogey-free 65 as the home contingent enjoyed an excellent first day of the Italian Open at Golf Club Milano.
Torrential rain and the threat of lightning meant that four hours and 55 minutes of play were lost in Monza but that did not appear to affect the locals, with five Italians in the top 25 in the clubhouse.
The first round will not be completed until Friday morning.
Molinari - the 2006 champion - led the way at six under and he was two shots ahead of 21 year old amateur Federico Zucchetti, who was playing in just his second European Tour event.
Nicolo Ravano, 31, was then a further shot back, just a shot clear of two more amateurs in Michele Cea and Lorenzo Scalise, both 21.
At 33 and with three European Tour titles under his belt, Molinari is very much the elder statesman of the group and he made birdies on the 12th, 14th, 16th, first, second and third to sit just a shot behind overnight leader Rikard Karlberg.
"I'm very happy, I played very well in the Pro-Am yesterday and just carried that form into today," he said. "The goal at the beginning of the week was to put four good rounds together, so I'm one quarter of the way there.
"It's difficult to treat it like any other week. There is a lot more going on away from the course, so it's harder to stay focused but I'm much more used to it by now.
"It's always hard when you're stopping and starting, it's tiring mentally and physically and I'm now feeling exhausted. But I will have lots of rest tomorrow because we won't be teeing off until late in the afternoon, so hopefully I can get my energy levels back up and play just as well again."
Zucchetti showed great fighting spirit in his round, recovering from bogeys on the fourth and fifth with six birdies in a 67.

"I'm obviously very happy, especially as I was two over par after five holes," he said. "Maybe I was a little nervous, or maybe the weather delay affected my focus, but I settled down after the birdies on six and seven and after that I played really well.
"I didn't really have any [expectations] to be honest. But I've played the course many times, so I know it very well which obviously helps me a lot. It's not a long course, you just need to hit it in the right spots and for the most part I did that today."
Ravano had six birdies and two bogeys in his round, with Scalise and Cea also recording a pair of blemishes each.
Andrea Pavan was another Italian going well with a birdie and an eagle in his opening six holes.
Scots who have completed their first rounds:
par 71
67 Jamie McLeary (T5)
71 Stephen Gallacher (T76)
72 Paul Lawrie, David Drysdale (T105)

Chloe Currie first Canadian to win Duke of

York Young Champions Trophy

Chloe Currie is the first Canadian to win The Duke of York Young Champions Trophy after an excellent final round at Royal Birkdale.
Sixteen-year-old Chloe shot a round of 68 to end the tournament two under par, winning by a one shot margin from Norway’s Markus Braadlie.
Speaking after her success, Currie said: “I didn’t know what to expect as I have never played links golf or even played in Europe but I played very well. This oturnament is great as you get to play with other juniors from different countries. It makes it a memorable experience.”
The Duke of York presented the trophy at Royal Birkdale. Speaking at the presentation, he said: “Thank you to everybody at Royal Birkdale. The course has been laid out in fantastic fashion. The weather is normally horrible this week so you have been very lucky. Thank you to all competitors for making it the wonderful tournament that it is. I wish you all continued success.”
Currie hit five birdies as she headed up the leaderboard throughout the day. That performance also ensured that she also took the prize for the Lowest Girls' Round of the week.
Overnight leader Markus Braadlie was tied with Currie at the top of the standings throughout the Final Round. However, he failed to hole a putt on the 18th green as he carded a round of 73 to finish a shot adrift of Currie.
On another glorious day on the Lancashire coast, several competitors hit low scores. England’s Angus Flanagan shot a 68 to take the Boys' Lowest Round prize.
“It was a good round for me on the back nine. My game just changed at the halfway point and all of my putts went in,” he said after his excellent round.
Flanagan also praised the tournament, saying: “It really prepares you for life as a professional as you are treated like one. It’s great.”
Elsewhere and Slovenia’s Luka Naglic took the Boys' Runner-Up prize as he finished his week with a three under par round of 69.
Finland’s Anna Backman was the Girls' Runner Up. She also hit a round of 69 as she finished four shots behind the champion.
Speaking in the clubhouse afterwards she said: “The conditions were good. There was no wind and I played well on the back nine. I have had a bad season so it was nice to end with a good tournament.”
After a memorable three days at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club, The Duke of York Young Champions Trophy will return at Royal Liverpool in 2017.

South Koreans make the pace at Evian
FROM THE LET WEBSITE
South Korean pair Park Sung-Hyun (above) and Chun In Gee made a major statement when they opened with a pair of eight-under-par 63s to hold a one-stroke lead at the Evian Championship in France today.
The 2015 US Women’s Open champion Chun and Korean LPGA money list leader Park both impressively fired eight birdies on a day of sunshine and showers at Evian Resort Golf Club.
China’s Shanshan Feng, who won the Buick Championship before collecting an Olympic bronze medal last month, shares second with Annie Park of the United States on seven-under, but Park and Chun were the latest South Korean names to lead on the Ladies European Tour.
The 22-year-old stars hit 16 and 18 fairways respectively and Chun said: “Before the round I felt really nervous today and it was windy and there was a thunderstorm this morning, so I tried to focus more on my game.”
Speaking through a translater, Park said: “Everything went well. The fairways are narrow and greens small, so it’s a very tough course.”
She added that she had been inspired to take up the game by former US Open champion Se Ri Pak.

England’s Dame Laura Davies is the leading European player in a share of 15th position on two-under-par and the two-time Evian Masters champion was all smiles after making three birdies on the back nine.
Before heading off to the local stadium to manage the caddies’ team at the annual charity football match, Davies said: “It was a dodgy old start with a double and then one three-putt bogey but the rest of it was great. I had a few really good up and downs.
"I missed a few greens today but I really did putt well, so it was nice. I had a nice bunker shot on 17. I had a really horrible number, 100 yards and it was halfway between clubs and I ended up hitting a poor second shot but a great up and down. On 18, I hit a lovely 7-iron to about four feet.”
Of the other notable players, Spain’s Solheim Cup star Carlota Ciganda was a stroke further back on one-under-par, in a group with the defending champion Lydia Ko. The world number one from New Zealand said that she was scrambling for pars and only made two birdies against one bogey.
“It was tricky for me because on the back nine I wasn’t hitting fairways. I was making up and downs. It was a good thing my wedge shots or chip shots were good enough where I was able to get off with par.”

England’s Charley Hull was flying high on four-under-par after 15 holes but hit her nine-iron tee shot from the par-3 16th into the lake protecting the green.
After walking off with a triple bogey 6, she signed for level par round of 71 and said: “I’m playing pretty well. It was a shame about the last couple of holes but I’m still quite happy with my round.
"I’m out early tomorrow so hopefully I can go out and post a low one. Hopefully the rain holds off. Everything is going well. It was just one bad shot on the 16th hole. Other than that, pretty solid. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think I could win.”
Hull is in a group sharing 39th place along with the recent Tipsport Golf Masters champion Nanna Koerstz Madsen from Denmark.  Madsen said: “I’m a little disappointed by my three-putt on 17 but I didn’t play very well so even par is a good score for me today. After the rain started it wasn’t that hard, it was score-able because there was no wind, but my swing wasn’t there so I’m happy with even par.”
Catriona Matthew is T65 after a two-over-par 73

SAN FRANCISCO -- In its first tournament of the 2016-2017 season, the University of Alabama-Birmingham men's golf team placed ninth overall at the San Francisco Olympic Invitational which was played at the famed Olympic Club.
Redshirt freshman Murray Naysmith led the Blazers by tying for eighth overall at two over par. Naismith entered the final round in a tie for 25th and put together a two-under 69 which landed him inside the top-10 in his first US college career tournament.
As a team, the Blazers entered the day in sixth place and fell three spots by collectively shooting 15-over par on the final day and +29 for the tournament.
"It was great to see Murray Naysmith place in the top-10 in his first collegiate tournament," said new head coach Mike Wilson. "There were some definite bright spots throughout the week, but we didn't finish the final round like we should have. We are a young team and we need to learn how to finish tournaments."
Sophomore Tim Harry was UAB's second finisher and tied for 19th overall by shooting a +7. After a one-over 72 in the opening round, Harry followed that up with consecutive three-over 74's in the second and third rounds for his top-20 finish.
The Blazers continue their autumn schedule in the Maui Jim Intercollegiate from Sept. 23-25 at Phoenix, Arizona

ABERDEENSHIRE-MIDLOTHIAN GAME

WILL GIVE ABOYNE TITLE POINTER

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

Aberdeenshire beat last year's national women's champions Angus in winning the North Division team title at Edzell in June.
That suggests they will start favourites to win the Scottish women's county championship finals, starting at Aboyne Golf Club tomorrow (FRIDAY), at the expense of the three other regional qualifiers, Midlothian, Dumfriesshire and Dunbartonshire and Argyll.
But team match-play golf is not quite so predictable as that. Midlothian, champions in 2011 and 2013, are Aberdeenshire's first opponents over three foursomes and six singles ties. The winners could go on to be crowned Scottish champions at the end of the all-play-all, three-day programme.
There are two players with +2 handicaps in the field of 32 players - Shannon McWilliam (Aboyne), and Gemma Batty (Powfoot) who should improve Dumfriesshire's prospects.
Dunbartonshire and Argyll have Anne Laing (Troon Ladies), three times Scottish champion, and the experienced Claire Hargan (St Regulus) in their team.

TEAMS
ABERDEENSHIRE - Louise Anderson (Duff House Royal), Julie Lees (Westhill), Samantha Leslie (Kemnay), Jasmine Mackintosh (Hazlehead), Shannon McWilliam (Aboyne), Donna Pocock (Kemnay), Rachel Polson (Kemnay), Carol Wilson (Murcar Links).
DUMFRIESSHIRE - Fiona Allison (Dumfries and Co), Gemma Batty (Moffat), Mirren Fraser (Powfoot), Jordana Graham (Southerness), Emma Greenlees (Dumfries and Co), Katie McCracken (Powfoot), Diane Macdonald (Dumfries and Co), Katie Malcolm jun (Dumfries and Co)
DUNBARTONSHIRE and ARGYLL - Lorraine Campbell (Cardross), Jillian Farrell (Cardross), Claire Hargan (St Regulus), Anne Laing (Troon Ladies), Lorna McClymont (Milngavie), Lori MacDonald (Cardross), Laura McGeachy (Haggs Castle), Fiona Rattray (Douglas Park).

Sisters Morgane and Kim Metraux help Switzerland to WWATC lead

Morgane and Kim Metraux of Switzerland
Morgane and Kim Metraux of Switzerland (Florida State Athletics)
Switzerland’s sister act opened strongly on Wednesday at the Women’s World Amateur Team Championship.
Morgane Metraux shot 4-under 68, a shot better than her sister Kim, and the Swiss team took a one-shot lead after 18 holes of play at Mayakoba Resort’s El Camaleon Golf Club in Riviera Maya, Mexico.
Switzerland’s three-woman team finished Day 1 at 7-under 137 (Azelia Meichtry’s 73 was thrown out), a shot better than South Korea, which played the other course (Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club) and counted a 68 by Hyun Kyung Park and a 70 by Hye Jin Choi, the low amateur at the 2016 U.S. Women’s Open.
The round is tied for the third lowest first-round score in the history of the event, now in its 27th year.
Morgane Metraux, 19, began her day on the 10th hole and went out in 5-under 31, a nine-hole stretch that included a 90-foot eagle and a double bogey. A closing birdie on the ninth hole, her final hole, gave her a 68, which was the best round on El Camaleon and tied with Park for the lowest overall.
“I just focused and the score just came,” Morgane said. “It is always better to just try to enjoy the day. I think I only missed one or two fairways, which is the key here.”
Morgane’s older sister Kim, 21, who plays with Morgane on the Florida State women’s golf team, made four birdies during her round.
“It’s always good to see your country’s name,” Kim said. “It’s always good at the top of the leaderboard.”
The Women’s World Amateur Team Championship is a biennial international amateur competition conducted by the International Golf Federation, which comprises 147 national governing bodies in 141 countries and 22 professional members. The winner receives the Espirito Santo Trophy, a trophy South Korea has won three times, in 1996, 2010 and 2012.
“I didn’t expect to be tied for the lead on the individual leaderboard, but I am very happy,” Park, 16 said. “I am really willing to make history and win the championship as Korea did in 2010 and 2012 because those players have had great success on the LPGA Tour and I want to follow in their footsteps so that other juniors can look up to me the same way I look up to them.”
The U.S. team is tied for seventh at 2 over with Austria, Ireland and Taiwan. South Carolina’s Katelyn Dambaugh shot 72 on El Camaleon and incoming freshmen Mariel Galdiano (UCLA) and Andrea Lee (Stanford) each shot 74.
Ireland was led by the world’s top-ranked amateur, Duke’s Leona Maguire (72), and Arizona State freshman Olivia Mehaffey (74), ranked No. 5 in the world.
