Chloe Currie first Canadian to win Duke of 

York Young Champions Trophy

Chloe Currie is the first Canadian to win The Duke of York Young Champions Trophy after an excellent final round at Royal Birkdale.
Sixteen-year-old Chloe shot a round of 68 to end the tournament two under par, winning by a one shot margin from Norway’s Markus Braadlie.
Speaking after her success, Currie said: “I didn’t know what to expect as I have never played links golf or even played in Europe but I played very well. This oturnament is great as you get to play with other juniors from different countries. It makes it a memorable experience.”
The Duke of York presented the trophy at Royal Birkdale. Speaking at the presentation, he said: “Thank you to everybody at Royal Birkdale. The course has been laid out in fantastic fashion. The weather is normally horrible this week so you have been very lucky. Thank you to all competitors for making it the wonderful tournament that it is. I wish you all continued success.”
Currie hit five birdies as she headed up the leaderboard throughout the day. That performance also ensured that she also took the prize for the Lowest Girls' Round of the week.
Overnight leader Markus Braadlie was tied with Currie at the top of the standings throughout the Final Round. However, he failed to hole a putt on the 18th green as he carded a round of 73 to finish a shot adrift of Currie.
On another glorious day on the Lancashire coast, several competitors hit low scores. England’s Angus Flanagan shot a 68 to take the Boys' Lowest Round prize.
“It was a good round for me on the back nine. My game just changed at the halfway point and all of my putts went in,” he said after his excellent round.
Flanagan also praised the tournament, saying: “It really prepares you for life as a professional as you are treated like one. It’s great.”
Elsewhere and Slovenia’s Luka Naglic took the Boys' Runner-Up prize as he finished his week with a three under par round of 69.
Finland’s Anna Backman was the Girls' Runner Up. She also hit a round of 69 as she finished four shots behind the champion.
Speaking in the clubhouse afterwards she said: “The conditions were good. There was no wind and I played well on the back nine. I have had a bad season so it was nice to end with a good tournament.”
After a memorable three days at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club, The Duke of York Young Champions Trophy will return at Royal Liverpool in 2017.
