Corbett makes big move in South Order of Merit
David
Brodie has retained a strong lead in the race for the 2016 South Order
of Merit. However Chris Corbett made a big move by winning the
MacRobert last Saturday and claiming top OOM points on Sunday at the
Brotherston Trophy to move above Michael Grunwell in to second spot.
Colin Hamilton also made a big move last weekend with a second place at
Stranraer and claiming top OOM points with Chris at Dumfries and
County.
The South Championship and resulting match-play championship will go a long way in determining this years OOM winner.
Robson knocks out English championship top seed
Dorset’s
Tom Robson knocked out top seed Will Enefer today to claim his place in
the quarter-finals of the men’s English Amateur Championship at Ganton
Golf Club.
“It’s
been a good day,” said Robson (Weymouth) who earlier defeated Leon
Fricker (Yelverton) 3 and 2. He’s in the quarter finals for the second year
in a row and said: “Anything now is a bonus, I just want to enjoy it,
that’s what I do it for.”
Robson
(image © Leaderboard Photography) had the upper hand throughout his
match against Enefer, never dropping behind and eventually winning
2 and 1. Tomorrow he plays Jack Gaunt (Drayton Park) who was taken to the
21st before clinching his match against Jay Beisser (The Rayleigh).
Yorkshire
hopes of a third home winner in a row – after Nick Marsh and Joe Dean –
now rest with Dan Brown (Masham). He’s the county’s sole survivor after
Steve Robins (Hull) was beaten on the last this afternoon by Jack Singh
Brar (Remedy Oak).
Brown
had a topsy-turvy day. First he sped through his morning match against
Ben Amor (Marlborough) with the help of a hole-in-one on the 158-yard
5th, where he used an eight iron. It was his third hole in one, but his
first since he was 11, 10 years ago.
This
afternoon he faced Daniel Sutton (Walsall) and had to withstand a
determined fightback before making his way into the quarter-finals. Brown was four up after 10 but after 17 holes the pair were level and Brown had to produce a closing birdie to win through. “It was a good birdie under a lot of pressure,” he said. “I’m relieved more than anything.”
Tomorrow
Brown will play Tom Gandy (Rowany), who knocked out Lytham Trophy
winner Alfie Plant (Sundridge Park) this afternoon by 2/1.
Jamie
Mist (Hayling) beat international Paul Kinnear (Formby) 3/1 and will
face boy international Charlie Strickland (Ham Manor). Strickland
defeated another international, Josh Hilleard (Farrington Park), this
afternoon.
The
last quarter final will be between George Bloor (Cavendish) and Jack
Singh Brar (Remedy Oak). Bloor beat Laird Shepherd (Rye) on the 19th
this afternoon while Singh Brar defeated Steve Robins (Hull) by one
hole.

Scottish Amateur quarter-finalist won Scottish boys championship at Murcar Links
Craig Howie hopes he can pull off a title
double in North-east
SCOTTISH GOLF NEWS RELEASE
By ED HODGE
Peebles player Craig Howie hopes the North-east again proves his lucky charm after sealing his spot in the quarter-finals of the Scottish men’s amateur championship at Royal Aberdeen.
At the neighbouring Murcar Links four years ago, Howie lifted the Scottish boys championship (flashback picture to April 2012 on right) and his sights are set on more silverware in the Granite City following a last-16 comeback.
On a gloriously sunny day when the wind was at its freshest all week, Howie breezed home in his tie with Turnhouse’s Euan McIntosh, winning three of the last four holes for a two-hole success.
The 21-year-old has now set up a last-eight tie with his foursomes partner from Scotland’s European amateur team title-winning side, namely Connor Syme.
“The North-east has been good to me,” admitted Howie. “I’ve had a great year with a lot of solid performances. I think I’ve just kicked on a little more, with the belief and confidence I can compete. It’s going to be a little strange playing Connor, especially as we were unbeaten in our foursomes matches.”
Drumoig’s Syme continued his impressive progress with a 3 and 2 victory over Irvine’s Stuart Easton and was pleased to achieve a mini-goal for the week over the Balgownie links.
The GB and I cap and Australian Amateur winner said: “Three years in a row I’ve reached the last-16 so the monkey is now off my back. I was ahead early in both my matches today and didn’t give much away, only losing two holes.
"The wind was the strongest it’s been all week, especially on the back nine. You had to put it in play off the tee to have a chance.”
With Syme and Howie facing off tomorrow morning, another seeded player, title-holder Robert MacIntyre, continued his admirable defence with an impressive victory over the in-form Graeme Robertson.
Glenbervie’s Robertson is chasing a sixth straight Home Internationals place, but MacIntyre executed some wonderful chip shots to build a commanding early lead and emerge victorious 4 and 3.
The Glencruitten left-hander said: “Graeme made a couple of mistakes and then I got a break at the fifth when my drive bounced kindly out of the rough 10 yards from the green.
“Graeme came back, but I hung on. Coming here, I thought ‘I’ve got to try and defend it’. It’s the same as Muirfield last year, it’s about hitting fairways and greens and this afternoon is as good as I’ve played in a while.”
Next up for MacIntyre is Elderslie’s Alasdair McDougall, with the pair supposed to be travelling up to Aberdeen together for practice. However, McDougall found himself in A and E in Paisley on Friday night due to an abscess and almost pulled out of the event.
Never has the phrase ‘beware of the injured golfer’ been truer as McDougall – who was second in stroke-play qualifying at the British Amateur a few weeks ago – teed up without a practice round and has now battled his way to the last eight, seeing off Andrew Gibson from Blairgowrie 4 and 3 in the last-16.
“I was going to pull out, but decided to give it a go,” said McDougall. “I’m glad I did.”
In the final quarter of the draw, Royal Burgess’ Malcolm Pennycott has shone all week to set up a clash with George Duncan from Windyhill. Pennycott was too strong for William Walker while, Duncan ended the hopes of local lad Ben Murray (Portlethen) by two holes.
Meanwhile, at the top of the draw, there were bizarre circumstances come the conclusion of the Mark Halliday and Andrew Burgess tie. Nairn’s Burgess emerged with a one-hole win, but there was dialogue for a number of minutes on the 18th green as Halliday, who defeated 2001 champion Barry Hume in the last-32, thought he was going to extra holes.
US college student Burgess, 21, said: “Someone miscounted somewhere in the middle, so there was a bit of confusion at the end. But I went through every hole with Mark and he was OK with it. I was happy to come through with a par on the last.”
Halliday, 43, a Royal Aberdeen member for around 15 years, added: “It’s the first time I’ve shaken hands with someone when I thought I was going to extra holes.”
Burgess now meets Forres’ Jeff Wright after he won at the 19th to end the hopes of another Royal Aberdeen player, teenager Fintan McKenna. Having earlier come back from two down with six to play to beat fellow club player Steven Buchan, McKenna lost a ball off the tee at the first extra hole.
McKenna has been working for the last year in the cafe at the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre on the south side of Aberdeen, the job allowing him to hone his skills, and he could still be pleased with his run on home soil.

Jeff Wright v Andrew Burgess in all-North
quarter-final at Balgownie
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Jeff Wright, conqueror of Forres clubmate and rival Bryan Fotheringham earlier in the week, will figure in an all-North quarter-final against Andrew Burgess (Nairn) on Friday morning at the 89th Scottish amateur championship over Royal Aberdeen's classic Balgownie links.
Wright, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, won a fifth round thriller at the 19th against young home course player Fintan McKenna. Wright was one up for most of the inward half until McKenna won the 18th to square the match but the Forres man prevailed at the first extra hole.
Burgess, a student at Armstrong State University, eliminated Royal Aberdeen stalwart Mark Halliday by one hole after the latter, trailing by one hole for most of the inward journey, squared the match at the 16th.
There will be a quarter-final battle between the seeded Connor Syme (Drumoig) and Craig Howie (Peebles).
Howie (Peebles) ended the great run of 47-year-old former Scottish assistants professional champion Euan McIntosh (Turnhouse) but their fifth round tie went to the 18th green before Howie won by two holes. He had been three up after 14.
Syme was a 3 and 2 winner over Stuart Easton from Irvine after establishing a four-hole lead through 10 holes.
Defending champion Robert MacIntyre (Glencruitten) is hanging on grimly to the title and he produced his best performance of the week so far in dusting off the in-form but unseeded Graeme Robertson (Glenbervie) by 4 and 3.
The leftie from Oban was three up after 10 and five up after 13.
MacIntyre will play Alasdair McDougall (Elderslie), Tennant Cup winner in 2014 and 2015, for a place in the Friday afternoon semi-finals.
McDougall won by 4 and 3 against Andrew Gibson (Blairgowrie).
Malcolm Pennycott (Royal Burgess) claimed a place in the last eight with a 3 and 2 win over William Walker (Belton Park).
Pennycott, one up after 14, will now play George Duncan (Windyhill), a student at Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee.
Pennycott hails from the Isle of Arran and is a member of the Whiting Bay Golf Club at that location. He won the Scottish Alliance Championship at Duff House Royal last year and is now a member of the Edinburgh golf club at Barnton, Royal Burgess.
Duncan beat the last surviving local player, Ben Murray (Portlethen) by two holes, having been one up most of the way after the turn.

Greg Dalziel wins Lanarkshire boys' title
Left to right: Greg Dalziel, Jim Ewing (Shotts) and Craig O'Hara.
Greg Dalziel,
aged 16, is the new Lanarkshire boys' match-play champion. He beat fellow Airdie
player and also 16 years old Craig O’Hara in a nail-biting final which went to
the last putt!
Both boys started well and halved the first eight holes in par
although Craig’s superb approach at the 180yd par 3 eighth hole to four feet deserved a birdie but lipped out.
The ninth
was classic match-play where Craig looked favourite to win the hole from just
short of the par five in two but contrived to lose to a par! Greg extended his lead at the tenth and
looked set to win easily. However Craig had other thoughts and levelled after
16 holes, winning both 15 and 16.
The 17th hole was halved and Craig hit a tremendous drive at the 240 yard par 3 last. Alas it was too
good and went through the green. Greg hit hybrid on to the green and the
ensuing par was enough to secure victory. However both boys can be proud of
their efforts.
The trophy
was presented to Greg in the clubhouse by Lanarkshire President Jim Ewing of
Shotts Golf club.

Hutcheon and Brown have a day to forget at PGA championship
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Greig Hutcheon (PLGC Inchmarlo) and Graeme Brown (Montrose Links), two of the most consistent scorers on the Tartan Tour, both had a day they will want to forget in the third round of the lucrative PGA professional 72-hole championship over a long course of 7,403yd at The Oxfordshire Golf Club.
Hutcheon followed a pair of 70s with a three-over 75 for 215 - eight shots behind English leader Paul Nessling (67 for 207).
Greig had a double bogey 6 at the third and a double bogey 7 at the 11th.
Brown would probably have settled for that because he followed a 69 and a 71 with a nightmare round of 81 for 221. He had a quadruple bogey 8 at the first hole and a shocking 9 at the short third. To cap his owes he also had a double bogey 5 at the short 13th.
Leading Scot is Graham Fox (Clydeway Golf) who dropped back to a share of fourth place after a 72 for 209. He still has a chance of swooping over the final round to win the £10,000 top prize.

PGA NEWS RELEASE
FROM NATHANIAL SYLVESTER
As
a talented goalkeeper in his youth Paul Nessling was no stranger to
keeping clean sheets and bar a last hole bogey, served up the golfing
equivalent to dive into contention at the Titleist and FootJoy PGA
Professional Championship.
The Cooden Beach Golf Club
pro, who as a teenager was on Sunderland’s books alongside England star
Jordan Henderson, fired an almost flawless 67 in tricky conditions at
The Oxfordshire to join Ireland’s David Higgins at the top of a crowded
leaderboard after
three rounds.
Nessling’s five under par
effort, which matched the low round of the day by David Callaway,
included an explosive start with three birdies in four holes.
Fittingly his fireworks
came alongside playing partner, and occasional coach, Andy Raitt from St
George’s Hill who had ignited the £78,000 event with a course record
equalling 63 in the first round.
The pair traded birdies and
Raitt, after a nightmare 77 yesterday, is firmly back in the hunt with
his 69 leaving him just two shots off the lead alongside defending
champion Paul Hendriksen (Ivybridge) and Graham Fox (Clydeway Golf) with
Thorpe Wood’s Stuart
Brown above them one stroke behind the leaders.
Big-hitting Nessling
revelled in both the challenge presented by the Rees Jones-designed
Oxfordshire and playing alongside Raitt with echoes of the recent Open
fresh in their minds.
“We were joking around
saying let’s do a Mickelson and Stenson. We were dragging each other
along – he made a couple of bogeys but came back well,” he added.
“Funnily enough I had a few
lessons with Andy last year – he said I’d improved which is always a
good thing. We worked on my swing and he’s been on Tour so it was good
to pick his brains.”
Teeing off in the final
pairing alongside Higgins in the PGA’s flagship event will be a first
for Nessling but he is relishing the prospect.
“This is a new experience, but I’ll just try and do what I’ve done
the last few days. It will be alien for me but this is why you play golf
to be in this position and we’ll give it a really good go.”Nessling hails from a footballing family with dad and brother both keepers but golf was always his preferred option despite being offered terms by Premier League outfit Sunderland.
“I was living in Sunderland
but phoned up my dad and said this isn’t for me. I came back and did my
PGA training and went from there.
“At Sunderland I used to
get a lift to training with Jordan Henderson in his mom’s car which he
was on the insurance for. I’m sure that’s changed now for sure!”
Waterville Links-attached
Higgins meanwhile was philosophical after playing some of his best golf
but managing only a level par 72.
“It was a frustrating day
today,” he said. “I played well and putted nicely but they just didn’t
go in but that’s golf. You’re frustrated when you come off but when you
look at the leaderboard I’m still tied for the lead.
“Today was tougher, the
timing was off, whenever we played the harder holes it was into the wind
with a bit of rain but I had plenty of luck in the first two rounds so
it evens itself out and I’m in a good position.”
Brown bogeyed the last to
end one shy of the leaders but has been buoyed by his return to form
after some hard work with his coach Mark Sturgess who is also on caddy
duties this week.
“I’ve had a slow start to the season, played poorly and decided to make some changes,” said Brown.
“The last few weeks my
game’s been iffy but I can see the positives there and this week it’s
nice to come out to a course where you’ve got to hit the shots and
thankfully my game is standing up nicely when I hit them.”

Malcolm Reid leads the South Seniors at
Southerness with a fine 69 in the rain
By GORDON THOMSON
Senior international Malcolm Reid (Sonning) leads after the first round of the South of Scotland Seniors Open (sponsored by McCrea Financial Services) at Southerness with an excellent score of 69.
Stewart Henderson (Hamilton), playing in his first SSGS event, compiled a fine score of 70 to lie one shot back with Andrew Stracey (Denham), who won the North Seniors earlier in the year, in third place on 71.
Niall Lamond (Balmore), Andrew Campbell (Murcar), Keith Reilly (Silverknowes) and Lindsay Blair (Grangemouth) were on 72 with John Fraser (Royal Burgess), Lindsay Gordon (Turnhouse) and Richard Johnston (Glenbervie) a shot further back on 73.
Weather conditions were difficult with rain for most of the day but that did little to deter Reid, who won the seniors' match-play championship on this course in 2014.
He birdied the fifth and eighth holes but each birdie was followed immediately by a dropped shot.
Southerness is unusual in that it has a par of 69 with a SSS of 73 and the difficult conditions today saw the CSS increase to 74, providing a measure of the quality of scoring produced by the leading competitors.
Fortunately weather conditions are expected to be better tomorrow and that should make for an exciting finish.

Scottish Amateur Round 4 and 5 results
Jeff Wright v Andrew Burgess in all-North
quarter-final at Balgownie
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Jeff Wright, conqueror of Forres clubmate and rival Bryan Fotheringham earlier in the week, will figure in an all-North quarter-final against Andrew Burgess (Nairn) on Friday morning at the 89th Scottish amateur championship over Royal Aberdeen's classic Balgownie links.
Wright won a fifth round thriller at the 19th against young home course player Fintan McKenna.
MacIntyre will play Alasdair McDougall (Elderslie), a winner of more than one SGU Order of Merit 72-hole event over the past year or two, for a place in the Friday afternoon semi-finals.
Duncan beat the last surviving local player, Ben Murray (Portlethen) by two holes, having been one up most of the way after the turn..

Royal Aberdeen challengers meet in round
of the last 32 at Balgownie
FROM THE SCOTTISH GOLF WEBSITE
By ED HODGE
Local bragging rights will be at stake Thursday morning after two Royal Aberdeen members set up a fourth-round clash on their home course at the Scottish men’s amateur championship.
Experience will meet youth when three-time Balgownie club champion Steven Buchan, 38, faces off against Fintan McKenna, 18, with both one-handicappers drawing on their local knowledge to reach the last-32.
Buchan fired a 7-iron to two feet at the 17th to secure a 2 and 1 win over former Scotland boys cap George Burns and reach the fourth round for the first time. McKenna, meantime, just edged out new Scotland boys' Home Internationals cap Ben Ferguson by the same margin
“Local knowledge is definitely an asset,” said Buchan, who only met McKenna for the first time at the second tee today. “I’ve been a member here since I was 10 and it’s all about hitting it on fairways and greens. That is easy to say but hard to do. I’ve played guys knocking it 50 yards past me, but I’ve just focused on hitting it straight.
McKenna is only playing in the event after Grant Forrest pulled out, but he has taken his chance. Having shot a course record 62 in the Scottish boys' open stroke play at Royal Burgess last year, the local lad has found his form again.
“It’s the toughest I’ve ever seen the course, and managing your ball off the tee is crucial,” said McKenna, who worked as a marshal when the venue hosted the 2014 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open. “Coming into the event from fourth reserve I knew I didn’t need to play many practice rounds.”
After a lack of surprise results over the opening rounds, there were some upsets on day three. Matthew Clark, Calum Fyfe and Liam Johnston, all in Scotland’s men’s Home Internationals side at Nairn next month, all exited, as did the reigning Scottish boys champion Eric McIntosh.
The South African Amateur champion Craig Ross also lost out, beaten by Nairn’s Andrew Burgess 3 and 1, while the fifth seed also fell as Tantallon’s Calum Hill claimed an impressive 6 amd 4 victory over another Scotland international, Jamie Savage.

Burgess, 21, said: “It’s a good scalp for me, and I felt I played really good golf. I knew I had nothing to lose so just wanted to give it a good run which I did.”
However, former pros Barry Hume, 34, and Euan McIntosh, 47, used their experience to negotiate paths to the last-32, both doing enough to progress.
McIntosh was four up with four to go, but was relieved to hole a 30 feet putt and finally see off his opponent, Mount Ellen’s Eamon Bradley, at the 17th.
“I’m struggling a bit and experience has won me the last three games,” said the Turnhouse player, coached by 1986 Scottish Amateur winner Colin Brooks.
Of the leading two seeds, Robert MacIntyre (Glencruitten) and Connor Syme (Drumoig), both progressed with something to spare, while Glenbervie’s Graeme Robertson continued his form with a 7 and 6 triumph against another Royal Aberdeen player, Craig Leith. Nairn teenager Sandy Scott also continued his run to win through.
Australian Amateur champion Syme fired four birdies in a row from the 10th, making seven in total against Muckhart’s Robert Watson, and said: “I feel good. I’ve got a game plan this week and I’m trying to stick to it.”
Of the locals, a further Royal Aberdeen member in Mark Halliday also reached round four, beating Alyth’s Michael Brodie at the 20th.
The last-32 and last-16 ties are all played at Royal Aberdeen today with car parlomg and entry free for all spectators.
