Greg Dalziel wins Lanarkshire boys' title
Left to right: Greg Dalziel, Jim Ewing (Shotts) and Craig O'Hara.
Greg Dalziel,
aged 16, is the new Lanarkshire boys' match-play champion. He beat fellow Airdie
player and also 16 years old Craig O’Hara in a nail-biting final which went to
the last putt!
Both boys started well and halved the first eight holes in par
although Craig’s superb approach at the 180yd par 3 eighth hole to four feet deserved a birdie but lipped out.
The ninth
was classic match-play where Craig looked favourite to win the hole from just
short of the par five in two but contrived to lose to a par! Greg extended his lead at the tenth and
looked set to win easily. However Craig had other thoughts and levelled after
16 holes, winning both 15 and 16.
The 17th hole was halved and Craig hit a tremendous drive at the 240 yard par 3 last. Alas it was too
good and went through the green. Greg hit hybrid on to the green and the
ensuing par was enough to secure victory. However both boys can be proud of
their efforts.
The trophy
was presented to Greg in the clubhouse by Lanarkshire President Jim Ewing of
Shotts Golf club.
