Seb Galeppini: Highlands and Islands University

graduate who's looking for big-time break

Colin Farquharson writes: Remember the name Sebastiano Galeppini. He has recently completed a degree course in Golf Management at the University of Highlands and Islands at Dornoch. He has a CV that takes a lot of beating.   I meet him regularly during the golf season when I am the Ladies Golf Union website story writer and photographer. Seb has become the right-hand man of Susan Simpson, the LGU Head of Golf Operations.
Now he needs a big break to move further up the ladder of golf management.  The sky's the limit for a young man with his qualifications. He even refereed a match at last week's British women's open amateur championship at Dundonald Links.
Scottishgolfview.com is read by well over a million viewers annually. Someone out there could want Seb for a golf post that will being the best out of him.

Bryan Fotheringham and Chris Mailley

shoot record 65s at Brora

By ROBIN WILSON
The real impact of the North District's Order of Merit challenge was seen on the Brora golf course last Saturday with over 90 playing in the James Braid 36 hole open when the standard and quality of scoring was the best seen since the club's heydays of the 1990's
Scratch and plus handicap bearing golfers, all of them featuring in the 2016 Order of Merit table, broke par in one or both rounds and an amateur course record of 65 was set in round two by Bryan Fotheringham (Forres), then equalled by the previous record holder, Royal Dornoch's Chris Mailley.

Their cards:
Bryan Fotheringham:
OUT:  3 4 4 3 4 2 4 5 3 (32)
   IN:   3 4 4 3 4 4 3 4 4 (33) = 65

Chris Mailley:
OUT:  4 3 4 3 4 2 4 3 3 (30)
    IN:  5 4 5 3 4 3 3 5 3 (35) = 65

Nairn's reigning North District Champion Fraser Fotheringham led the first round challenge for the Howey Cup with a five birdie two under par first card of 68 (35-33).
Close behind, and also with an inward 33, to add to his first nine 36 for 69 came Muir of Ord's John Forbes before the arrival of two ex District champions, all with level par 70's - Dougie Thorburn (Thurso) (36-34) and Bryan Fotheringham  (Forres) (35-35).
Also on level par 70 was the cup holder, Chris Mailley of Royal Dornoch, and Brora and Inverness teenager Cameron Franssen.

In the first round mix were, Inverness's senior Laurie Chancellor, Dornoch's Bryan Urquhart both 71, Robert MacKay (Fortrose and Rosemarkie), Robert McKerron (Forres), former winner Iain Powell (Murcar Links) and the best of the home members Robert MacDonald, all with 72.

Chasing down the Sponsor's Royal Marine Hotel Trophy were Rory MacPherson (The Nairn) (13) 66, and the local pair of Ken Lorimer (11) 67 and Ian Davidson (19) 67. A stroke back was Robert MacKay's nett 68, of 4. Mackay had learned his golf at Brora when a Helmsdale laddie and his second round score improved by one to nett 67 to scoop the Marine Hotel Trophy with 135 after two rounds.

The Clubhouse was buzzing when the 3 handicapper from Forres came in with his new course record card of 65 but he did not count on the determination of Mailley to match it. Indeed Mailley just lipped out for a final birdie two which would have given him a 64 as they were joined on the 135 aggregate by Nairn's Fotheringham (67-68). (The two Fotheringhams, not related, both hold +3 handicaps and Mailley +2).

With a second round gross 70, nett 67 regular visitor to Brora, Dougie Brown from Prestwick Golf Club, hauled himself up into a second nett place behind Mackay and was rewarded with the Kidd Cup from the Class 1 Section while local Ken Lorimer (hdc 11) netted a total of 137 to win the Duke of Sutherland Cup from Section 2.  Confined to members of the James Braid Society Brora's club Secretary, Tony Gill won the James Braid Plinth with nett scores of 73 and 68.

Billy Hurley III wins for first time on US PGA Tour at Quicken Loans National

Billy Hurley III claimed his maiden PGA Tour title at Congressional
Billy Hurley III is a US PGA Tour winner for the first time after a three-stroke victory at the Quicken Loans National.
Hurley III made some huge shots down the stretch at Congressional and eventually had a three-shot advantage over runner-up Vijay Singh.
His hopes of a maiden title appeared in some doubt for much of the final round, although his lead always remained intact despite only reaching the 13th hole level par for the day.
The expected pressure from Ernie Els dissipated when the South African made a double bogey at the short 10th, where his tee shot ended up in the water.

Els had made five birdies on his front nine, but also mixed in three bogeys and, after a rollercoaster round of 72, he would finish in fifth place, five shots off Hurley III.
That left Singh as his main challenger and the Fijian moved to five under for the day, 13 under overall, when he birdied the 12th.

Hurley III bogeyed that hole to drop back to 15 under and he needed to make a nervy 10-footer at the next to save par as doubts started to swirl whether he would be able to hang on and claim first place.
But those nerves would be calmed at the 15th where Hurley III made a somewhat fortunate birdie, holing a pitch after finding a bunker off the tee and failing to reach the green with his approach.
He added a further shot to his advantage at the par-five 16th, where a poor wedge shot was followed by a superb long-range birdie putt.
Singh birdied two of his last three holes, while bogeying the 17th, but Hurley III finished off his banner day with a pair of pars to secure the £923,000 first prize.
"I couldn't think of a better tournament for my first PGA Tour win," Hurley said afterwards. "I'm just thrilled to have gotten it done today."

Hurley also had to cope with the emotional strain of seeing the many police officers on duty around Congressional, prompting memories of his father who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound last year.
"It's been a hard year," Hurley added. "It's been a really hard year, so it's nice to have something go well."
Young Spaniard Jon Rahm, playing in his first tournament since turning professional, finished in a tie for third alongside former champion Bill Haas.
Rahm, the first round leader, closed with a 70 to finish on 13 under while Haas had three birdies in a bogey-free round of 68.
One of Rahm's other prizes, along with Hurley III, Singh and Harold Varner III (-9) is a place in The Open at Royal Troon next month.
Rahm had a moment to forget when he shanked his tee shot on the 13th at the Quicken Loans National
