Valderrama boosted by all-round improvements

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Real Club Valderrama is looking better than ever after undergoing improvements in preparation for next month’s Open de España hosted by the Sergio Garcia Foundation.
The iconic lay-out now boasts a state-of-the-art short-game practice area, designed by Kyle Phillips, and significant work has been done on the bunkers and tees on the course, bringing them up to the same high standard as the fairways and greens.
Many of the cork trees lining the course have been pruned, allowing more aggressive play from the rough, and a brand new high-tech pumping system has not only improved playing conditions but has dramatically reduced water and energy costs.
Javier Reviriego, General Manager of Real Club Valderrama, said: “We are excited to stage on our course such a storied event as the Open de España, and we couldn’t have a better host than Sergio García, a great friend of Valderrama. Our maintenance team is making a big effort to have the course in top condition.”
Francisco Javier Fernández Hernández, Minister for Tourism and Sport of the Junta de Andalucía, said: “The hosting of the Open de España is a first class asset, not only for our tourism but for our sports promotion. At present, only around 14-15% of our golf tourists are Spanish, therefore we have a large margin of growth with regard to internal tourism.
“We are redesigning our promotion strategy, and we believe that the best way to attract golfing tourists is to show what we have. This tournament is a step in the right direction, as Valderrama is synonymous with excellence.”
Gonzaga Escauriaza, President of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, said: “The Open de España is the second oldest tournament in Europe and represents Spain’s great contribution to golf in Europe and worldwide.
“This edition is full of special ingredients, returning to Andalucía and Valderrama, one of Europe’s golfing icons. We thank the European Tour for their effort, as well as all those who are making this tournament possible, very specially Reale who, one more year, is giving us their support. We hope to have a big week, with a great atmosphere and all Federation members can attend for free.”
Ángel Gallardo, vice-chairman of the European Tour, added: “I wish to highlight the great contribution of Spanish players to the European Tour along the years.
“Right now, top players like Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald, or Ernie Els are hosting tournaments, and we are grateful to Sergio García for his commitment to the Open de España.”

PGA of America cancels Grand Slam event

The PGA of America has decided to permanently cancel the Grand Slam of Golf.
The four-man, 36-hole event had been played annually since 1979 and typically brings together the four major champions from the previous calendar year.
After eight years in Bermuda, the event was slated to shift to Trump National in Los Angeles last year. It was abruptly pulled from the site following controversial remarks about immigrants from course owner and presidential candidate, Donald Trump, and ultimately cancelled.
While that decision was billed as a one-year hiatus, PGA officials have now decided to make the change permanent.
"When the PGA Grand Slam of Golf was launched in 1979, the golf world was much different than it is today," the PGA said in a statement.
"The PGA Tour's wrap-around schedule, the European Tour's Race to Dubai, plus other important international events, make the fall schedule very busy and hectic for the top players in the world. It had also become challenging to attract fans, television viewership and media interest.
"While we have enjoyed staging the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, given those many factors, the timing is right to discontinue the event."
In recent years the event had seen some major champs opt out of the late-season appearance, including Phil Mickelson (2010, 2013), Louis Oosthuizen (2010) and Rory McIlroy (2012). The final champion was Martin Kaymer, who beat Bubba Watson, McIlroy and alternate Jim Furyk in 2014.

DEESIDE TO RE-OPEN AS A 10-hole

COURSE BY BEGINNING OF APRIL

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Frank Coutts, Deeside Golf Club's director of golf, is hopeful that the course will re-open for play at the end of this month or the beginning of April.
Flooding from the River Dee covered the Haughton course in a layer of silt which, although cleared in the main after a lot of hard work by the greenkeeping staff, has affected the course's drainage capabilities.
"The plan is to re-open as a 10-hole course with a view to bringing back into play three or four more holes after a month or two," said Frank.
" Hopefully, by the end of June, we should have the 18-hole course back in play."

HAZLEHEAD NUMBER ONE COURSE TO RE-OPEN NEXT MONTH

The Hazlehead municipal No 1 18-hole course, Aberdeen, closed this winter for drainage work, will re-open next month.

Craig Lawrie follows in father's footsteps by

winning NE Alliance championship

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Craig Lawrie, 20-year-old son of Paul Lawrie, has followed in his famous father's footsteps by winning the North-east Alliance championship.
With rounds of three-over 66 at Inverallochy last week and five-under 64 at Craibstone today, Craig's 36-hole tally of 130 pipped clubhouse leader, Murcar Links amateur Andrew Campbell (65-66) by one shot for the Uniroyal Quaich won by Paul Lawrie in 1989 and 1991.
"I hit it well today to have an eagle 3 at the fourth and birdies at the eighth, 11th, 13th and 17th," said young Lawrie.
"The only bad shot I played all day was at the 18th where I had my only bogey of the day after pulling my second left of the green and failing to get up and down to save par."
Campbell will be rueing his bogeys at the fifth, seventh and 18th in halves of 35-31 at Craibstone today. He had birdies at the second, eighth, 12th, 13th, 15th and 16th.
Some consolation for Campbell is that he won the trophy that goes to the amateur with the lowest two-round total.
Defending champion John Duff (Newmachar) tied for fifth place on 134 with scores of 64 and 70 (37-33).
Newmachar amateur Chris Lamb, joint first-round leader with a 64 at Inverallochy, did not have a single birdie in halves of 39-35 for a 74 at Craibstone.
Kris Nicol (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) was another who had a 64 in the first round and could not break 70 at Craibstone. He shot a 73 after starting bogey-bogey and a triple bogey 7 at the 13th was the last straw.
Scott Mackie (Kemnay) won the Chapper's Pot Class 1 handicap trophy with a net aggregate of 131 off five of a handicap.
Mike Winton (Caledonian) won the Major's Pot Class 2 handicap award with a net total of 129 off 13.
Alfie Smith (Turriff) was the winner of the Veterans' Pot with a net total of 134 off four

Remember the name Harrison Endycott: Riversdale Cup

winner could be next Aussie star on world stage

FROM THE AUSTRALIAN GOLF NEWS LETTER
If you hear about a young man wandering around Royal Adelaide, Australia A this week looking as if he’s on a mission, it might just be Harrison Endycott.
The New South Welshman is on a roll  – and he makes no secret about his desire to add next week’s South Australian Classic to his collection.
Endycott, 19, this week added the time-honoured Riversdale Cup to a trophy cabinet already bulging with the Lake Macquarie and Avondale Amateur prizes safely housed after a spectacular seven-week east coast swing.
But the young Sydneysider wants more.
“It’s a great feeling to win – I really want to win all the time,” Endycott said.
“So to be able to have a bit of success like this is great – I feel really good about my game right now and I’m very confident in what I’m doing out on course.”
The NSW state team member “absolutely” wants to be in Golf Australia’s national squad at some point in the near future.
But “rather than sit around and whinge about it”, the effervescent Endycott is using it as a motivation to drive his winning run.
“I really like the guys in the national squad and I have absolutely nothing against them … and I’m not bitter about not being in it at all,” he said.
“I just take it as everything happens for a reason and obviously I’m not quite ready yet … but I’ll keep going away and trying harder and pushing to get into it and hopefully one day soon I’ll be ready.
“It definitely makes me want to beat those guys, that’s for sure.
“So if I can keep going at the SA Classic next week, hopefully I’ll get that little bit closer.”
When the world amateur rankings are updated this week, Endycott will be within touching distance of – if not already having achieved – his stated 2016 goal of the top 50.
But listening to him speak, you get the feeling that will ultimately be just a stepping stone.
“I’m just really focused on getting better right now. All the (Golf NSW) high performance guys are,” he said.
“Dean (national coach Dean Kinney) and all the high performance staff and Precision Athletica are doing an unbelievable job of helping us become not just better golfers, but better athletes – and I really stress `athletes’.
"Because that’s what we are now – we’re an Olympic sport and we’re competing against other sports as well to get the best athletes competing.
“And we’re always being told it doesn’t matter how much talent you have, if you don’t work hard, you just won’t get there.
“And I think you’ll see there’s been a lot of good results (from NSW team members) lately because we have that really good relationship among us, and the coaches and staff and we’re really pushing each other. It’s fantastic.”
Endycott paid special tribute to his coach Mark Paterson, also the head professional at his home club at Avondale in Sydney’s north-western suburbs.
“I sat down with Mark before Riversdale and we were discussing exactly what you needed to do to win there,” Endycott said of the club in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs for which he has a special affinity as it and Avondale play an annual – and highly prized – interclub match.
“So I know the course pretty well and Mark just said to me that if there was one area of my game that needed to be on last week it was `inside 100m’ – just really taking advantage of the short irons in that you get plenty of at Riversdale.
“I’ve always been a confident driver of the ball, so we figured to grab those opportunities inside that wedge range was going to be important … and that’s exactly how it panned out.”
Endycott beat a quality field with a final-round leaderboard the envy of most amateur events in Australia.
But applying all the lessons he has soaked in since first breaking through in the 2013 Srixon International as a junior, he held his nerve to complete three spectacular closing rounds of 67-67-69 after a nervy opening 71 that included three bogeys in a four-hole stretch from the first hole.
That run highlighted to the Sydneysider exactly where his improvement had come – and was critical in securing a one-stroke victory over Henry Spring with a host of other top contenders right in the mix.
“I feel one of the keys in the past couple of months has been for me to grind out rounds when you know you’re not playing your best but not to play yourself out of contention with a big score,” he said.
“I think to have known that and felt like I did there, it was good not to eliminate myself … especially at a tournament that means so much to me.
